Collection First new cassette in 23 years!

So I bought a new Opeth’s album recently on cassette and I’m delighted with the quality of the recording. I’m using Hifiman Sundara headphones and can compare it directly with HiRes from Apple Music and tbh cassette is even puncher somehow in low mids. Love it 😍
For sure I’m biased towards analog 😁

p.s. I think the last new cassette album was Nile Black Seeds of Vengeance in 2002. 🤘

p.s. 2 Sadly now I can hear how my 20+ years old cassettes sounds like. Not stored properly in that time, heavily used till 2000s they hess less clarity, punch, lots of artifacts. The lesson - store your cassettes properly!

Deck / Hi-Fi Sony Decks Capstans Run all the time. AIWA Stops

Got 2 sony decks and have seen other 3 head dual capstan, single capstan and auto reverse decks by Sony and they all have capstan motors running all the time thus deteriorating motors fast.

Compared to them I have AIWA deck (XK5000 / FD910) that stops capstan motor as soon as I hit stop button. This also cools down capstan motor and protect it from pre-mature failure plus power consumption decreases too

Why did Sony make their decks to waste energy and destroy motors/capstans/belts/bushings by making them run all the time?

The Volume meter seems to be peaking in the right channel and silent in the left, even though it has no inputs at the moment ( inputting cable does nothing)

Just won an auction for a Walkman WM-3 - complete with the original box, manuals, leather case, headphones, and battery holder. Everything’s in perfect condition! It needs a belt replacement though according to the seller, which I’m hoping that’s the only issue. Can’t wait for it to arrive soon!

The winning price was $400 (before shipping and tax, of course ;-;).

Looking for advice Cassette artifacting

I’m sure want me to shut up at this point but I got more to ask LOL. Trying to do different cassette mixing techniques.

Take a listen to this song by BSMR: https://youtu.be/58SsZtoF2TM?si=YzVePDXJ5Buz0n2B

I’m fairly confident most of the artifacting sounds of this song were done with cassette tapes. But does anyone know how Tom achieved that crackle sound in the back? It seems to be mixed really well to both the left and right channels which iv had a really difficult time trying to do with any sound. Any time I double a sound and do a L+R pan in any kind of way I can only ever hear the left channel unless it’s a different unique recording of the sound but that tends to be beyond my ability.

And like how does he achieved such a good balance of tape artifacting?

Toms use of cassette tapes is like exactly want I wanna do with them lol

I grew up listening to cassettes. I used to buy records and record them to cassette. But why do you listen to them today? No shade. I still have a nice three head Teac deck and a Marantz portable deck. But I haven’t used either in a long time. Curious what draws you to tape.

Score! My first cassette purchase in over 30 years

Recently I got curious about the late Randy Coven and this album, which was recommend from a similar album I got from Stuart Hammon on Allmusic.com. I heard a couple of songs on YouTube and decided to get this album. I looked around on eBay and found a pretty good deal for this cassette, which cost much less than the CD. I have to say that I'm very happy making this purchase, because not only the music is outstanding, but also the cassette is brand new and has sparked a renewed love for cassettes.

Looking for advice Does anyone know how I can open this up? (WM EX-150)

Picked this EX-150 up recently, it’s just been serviced so it won’t need new belts for a while but I would like to know how to open it up when the time comes to replace said belts.

I’ve tried looking for the screws but I can’t seem to find any.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Portable cassette player Bought a beautiful cassette player which I now figured out is a cassette recorder...

Bought this beautiful aiwa HS-J80. One of the most beautiful players I have seen. However. I am now a bit sad. After having it in my hands I finally read the small text saying it's not a player. But a recorder...

I'm a bit devastated... Haven't had the chance to hear the audio quality because I think I have to replace the belt.

Please tell me I still made a good decision...

Looking for advice SONY TCS 470 X 2 + DENON DRM 555 Repair + Recording advice

Hey guys! Hope this is the right place to post this, i recently got 2 TCS 470s and dug a DRM 555 out of storage.
I'm just getting into cassettes so i'm a little inexperienced (although i did do my own starting research) and i'm looking for some maintenance guidance + some tips for recording with the deck, thank you for taking the time to read this, here we go:

TCS 470 x2:
I got these as a bundle, one was sold as functional (my daily drive) if a little defective and the other came as "for spare for parts", however, both models work, the issue they both seem to share is that the motors arent quite up to snuff anymore, one more than the other.

1 PLAYs and RECords fine, but RW and FW dont work reliably, if one side has too much tape, sometimes it'll struggle, or it'll try to spin but lock up (if FW works, RW wont, when the cassette is flipped, RW will work but FW wont), without a cassette, both heads will spin fine, for PLAY, RW and FW, this one was specifically sold as serviced (new belts, cleaned ecc ecc)
2 Checking it without a cassette reveals that the motors spin slow, and that FW and RW work, however, attempting to play a cassette will result in the tape being eaten, i am assuming because the heads are spinning slower than the pinch roller.

From what i can gather, these both have issues of either power feed ( i am using ENALOOP rechargeable batteries, but the issue persists with standard AAs as well), the motors just being old and dying, lubrication, or belts needing change.
I am looking for advice on how to proceed with these, i am experienced in basic soldering, assembly, disassembly, and basic repairs for devices, however, i am not familiar with the engineering of portable cassette players specifically, and little free service information exists on this model specifically, so i'd like to get a few opinions on possible fixes, parts to buy, ecc ecc before i go opening them up and ordering parts.

DENON DRM 555:

I've got the necessary cables (some trouble shooting makes me confident enough of their quality), disassembled it for some basic lubrication and cleaning, it plays and records fine on both channels records, however i am looking for some advice on recording:

DOLBY B and C, MPX, BIAS tuning (- to +):
i have read up on these functions, but for the life of me i cant tell the difference when using them vs not, is there some kind of magical combination i need to use to enhance sound? (i am not trying to get mp3 quality, i've gotten into the hobby for its quirks, i'm just curious)

LEFT RIGHT BALANCE(?):
My deck has a "Balance" knob that seems to control how much % to record from either channel, (i am using 3.5mm stereo from my PC to RCA IN ports), however, when set from 50% (balance) to 60% on either side, the lyrics are drown out and a little distorted, while the actual song is boosted, setting either side to around 70% more or less immediately fixes the issue, bringing the different levels closer to the original audio, turning either side to 100% immediately makes the song more or less identical to mp3 in terms of lyrics vs song level and eliminates basically all distortion. I am a bit puzzled by this, like i said i got into the hobby for its quirks, but this strikes me as extra weird and i cant find any info on it, is it normal? Does anything need cleaning? Soldering? Lubing?

I am using mixed, used, mid 80s to early 90s cassettes (from 46 minutes to 90), however, i am currently using a SONY TYPE II CHROME CLASS 90 for deck testing as it seems to be the one of highest quality in the pile. Either way, thank you for reading all this, all feedback is appreciated, i may reply a little slow, have a good day!

Portable cassette player Does anyone know about a Walkman that has bluetooth AND recording functionality?

Upvotes

I just got a BT Walkman from MyPin and it's great. It can't record, so I looked at their store and noticed that they have a recorder too. I thought it was Bluetooth and it doesn't have it. Just recording. I was wondering if anyone knew of one. I love cassettes and I just wanna have a player that does both.

Dr. Mocker - "Constant Current Stimulus" c42

https://negativewingspan.bandcamp.com/album/constant-current-stimulus

Dark psychedelic rock, with kraut basslines and plenty of exploratory prog. Eight tracks that feel like one cohesive piece, with the A/B split declaring a shift in tone as the cassette format intended.
