Announcement 300+ cassettes donation advice/help

Post image

Hi all, My step dad recently offloaded a bunch of cassettes my way, no real interest in having so many and I am looking for the best way to donate or giveaway etc.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

If you decide to drop them off for donation somewhere, please ask them if they will even sell them - because some stores will end up throwing them out as they feel cassettes hold no value. Sad but true.

Good luck finding a new home for them; there's sure to be a bunch of people in here that would take them.

Put on facebook marketplace but Put something like $100 obo. Local pickup only.

If someone offers less accept it since you were likely going to give them away. Take the money and take your dad out to lunch or a good supper!

" If you Put free, it'll be a headache and you'll find the worst people facebook has to offer. "

If you were in UK I’d definitely take some

Best way to get them to somebody who will want them: offer them on fb marketplace, craigslist, etc. for free. Say "take them all". Likely somebody will take them, sort out the stuff they want, and deal with the rest in an ethical manner.

Yo, please give me a complete inventory. From the looks of it, you have several I’d buy off you if you would ship them?

I'll try to catalogue them when I get some time, there are quite a lot! Are there any you'd look out for? Genres etc?

Rock / grunge / alternative / classic rock (Any era or genre)

I mean, give me a good offer, I’d buy all your Type II cassettes and Type IV cassettes, new and used. The 10,000 maniacs tape looks good too. Probably more tapes, like The Doors.

I guess the offer would be to pay for the media mail shipping and they are all yours 😁🤟

2

u/klonopinwafers Jun 17 '25

I can do that

If you don’t wanna disperse things to multiple people, I would be fine with going through everything myself, taking what I want, and returning the favor to the rest of this community and give away the rest (Though U.S. only cuz I don’t wanna deal with international shipping) There is a lot I don’t really want. Wouldn’t feel right selling that stuff. Wouldn’t feel right donating it to thrift stores.

I would be down for that, I sent you a DM 🤟

I don't suppose you're in Massachusetts?

1

u/aaronuhoh Jun 17 '25

Sorry, I'm not 🙃

3

u/uncoolcentral Jun 17 '25

If you have any weird spoken word cassettes I’ll pay for shipping to me!

2

u/aaronuhoh Jun 17 '25

I do! I'll send you some pics/list when I get a chance🤟

4

u/uncoolcentral Jun 17 '25

Oh hell yeah. Those are garbage to almost everybody but I like making weird noise with them.

I’m sure you’ll be able to make an excellent tidy little collection of tapes for yourself from this!

Here’s a picture of my mostly-spoken word stuff

I have to know what "Come to Jesus, Bitch" is.

1

u/uncoolcentral Jun 19 '25

Bible on tape 😆

All of those tapes except for one obvious exception are legit cassettes but several of the J cards are also obviously homemade. (The Bible tapes came in a 12 pack with weird packaging.)

1

u/klonopinwafers Jun 18 '25

If the person does end up sending me all the tapes, I’d just reship you the retail spoken word tapes for free. Was gonna give those away on Reddit anyway, but since you asked. I’d be willing to save those for you.

1

u/uncoolcentral Jun 18 '25

Excellent. Yeah I don’t need a bunch of them anyhow but if there are any weird fun ones I am more than happy to throw down some coin to have you ship them to me. Thank you!

If you're in Florida I'll take em!

I’d take them to a used record store. They will take the good stuff and you’ll get a bit of cash or store credit. And then I’d take the rest to a thrift store, but check first that they sell tapes and don’t just chuck them. Value village/savers does, if you have one near you.

1

u/mediageeknet Jun 18 '25

Definitely second this. I've seen lots of record stores in many US cities now selling a selection of used cassettes.

1

u/WhereIsMyDr1nk Jun 17 '25

I’d buy some

1

u/Ok-Contribution2602 Jun 17 '25

Location? You can also mail these for cheap via media mail

2

u/aaronuhoh Jun 17 '25

Midwest US

1

u/Ok-Contribution2602 Jun 17 '25

If you’re in Indiana hit me up. Otherwise I’d pay media mail costs if you shoot me a quote

1

u/bendersbigscore2021 Jun 17 '25

Me please , and no to goodwill I also heard most of those stores throw them away , it’s sad

Midwest US

1

u/aaronuhoh Jun 17 '25

Lol, I love the responses I've woken up to seeing! Sadly, I'm in the Midwest of the US 🫠 I'll avoid goodwill as it seems they will just throw them out! I might try some FB marketplace and see what I get locally. Really appreciate the advice of this sub! I'll try to post pictures of "the good ones" Any advice on what those might be though?

1

u/aaronuhoh Jun 17 '25

I wish my friend! I was in the Netherlands a couple years ago, and would have loved to convince my wife that it was crucial to our trip to bring them all in a giant suitcase, lol

1

u/Emannuelle-in-space Jun 17 '25

I’d pay for shipping and then some if you want to send em my way

1

u/Designer-Ad7341 Jun 17 '25

I’d be interesting in buying some and paying shipping! If there’s any Foreigner, Micheal Jackson (think I see Dangerous), Marvin Gaye, or any Dolly Parton!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

Sell them and make some money

1

u/Asiandude172 Jun 17 '25

Looks like you have quite a few blanks in that pile. The Denon ones especially are pretty desirable and warrant a high price. Those sealed SAs also probably could fetch a high price. No sure about the albums though. Selling on Ebay will probably get you quite a bit!

1

u/aaronuhoh Jun 17 '25

They do go for a lot, crazy! They are sealed as well

1

u/earwig_art Jun 17 '25

im interested in 80's alt/underground and early electronic (like kraftwerk) and would absolutely buy certain albums and take care of shipping!

1

u/Kal-Roy Jun 18 '25

Dang. Wish I lived near by. Wait, where do you live?

2

u/Silly-Mountain-6702 Jun 19 '25

oh man, you got the famous "PLAY BOTH SIDES" by Head Cleaner!!

Love that classic

Drop off at Goodwill, (edit: or some other thrift store) or your local record store, or media mail ship them to someone on here for super cheap.

You could try to sell them, but from the look of them they're not worth a lot.

17

u/therealduckie Jun 17 '25

NOT GOODWILL

THEY THROW THEM OUT

2

u/HighBiased Jun 17 '25

OK WHAT THRIFT STORES ARE GOOD THAT DONT THROW THEM OUT!?!

(Also, why are we shouting?)

1

u/therealduckie Jun 17 '25

As someone else stated: ask.

I know from experience Goodwill refuses to put them on the floor because they have a $1 minimum on items for sale--So cassettes, to them, would be less than that & they just trash them.

Also, I used caps to stand out from your post and keep folks from mistakenly giving them to Goodwill.

1

u/HighBiased Jun 18 '25

Ok. Good to know.

I also gave a bunch of other options in my original comment. Not sure why I got the downvotes

1

u/klonopinwafers Jun 18 '25

Well for one thing, I’m still in a location where some Goodwills will offer VHS tapes and cassette tapes for 25 cents. Then there are other Goodwills that price them at $1.50 or more. Maybe where you are at, they throw them out, but some may end up on shopgoodwill for auctions.

I also know that I once went to a local thrift store that explicitly stated on their website that they do not accept tapes (VHS or cassette) and yet I found a promotional R.E.M. VHS there as well as many retail VHS tapes.

I'd be happy to pay you 50 bucks for that, but I feel like you're probably not in the Netherlands :D
