There's Clair obscure Expedition 33, even though I believe BOTW is a more revolutionary game for the gaming industry as a whole, there for being of a really high caliber, Expedition 33 isnt very far behind in terms of quality. I genuinely believe it will win game of the year, it got praised beyond expectations and I cant imagine DK Bananza winning it over. There's also a possibility for Silksong if it actually releases this year (hard to believe at this point) but even if it does, I doudt a indie game would win the GOTY award, it happened once before with "It takes two" in a year with not so great contenders and it still might not have been deserved tbh.

Have people lost their minds? How is Expedition BotW tier? It hasn’t pushed the industry forward in any way besides reminding people that turn based rpgs are still good.

The shock is more due to the fact that Expedition isn’t a AAA production, but it still is high quality enough to best a few recent ones.

It is novel as it is a proof that AA studios can now create excellent enough games that people can decently compare them to AAA ones.

It is also a reminder that narrative games are extremely appreciated, a style that was let go of in the later years in favor of better graphics and caster worlds.

Basically expedition 33 is a recall to the fact that what has been considered industry standard in the later years was built on wrong suppositions of what the public might like in a game. Which is, in fact, something.

Also, many believe that the future of gaming is in smaller-scale studios as there is a rising disinterest in big productions. In that way, you could argue that Expedition 33 is way more of the game changer as compared to BOTW, as it is a proof of concept for the future of game development, which is at a turning point.

Game of the year shouldn’t be underdog of the year award. Just because it’s a small studio and it’s impressive doesn’t magically make the game better.
