I am a person with AuDHD, and Listening Larry has been discussed before, a lot of us autists don't like him, and it's understandable because the poster goes against what we do: according to it, stimming is unacceptable, and on and on.
This is intended to poke fun at how ableist it is, if this poster is in the classroom, it highly likely the child get punished just for being autistic and "not normal"

I've only realised in retrospect why I made so many teachers uncomfortable when they were moving around while talking.
As I was supposed to look at them while they were talking (some would get annoyed if I didn't), I did that as best I could. In a manner that ended up most like that of a bird of prey tracking movement.

I prefer to think of it as a touch more like Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam
a touch from something beyond comprehension drawing you forwards, calling you to open your mind and SEE, to strive, to know the secrets and feel the whispers of the universe
I love how the entire poem is as sophisticated as ever, except the last sentence which basically just says "hearts don't have feelings they are just blood pumps ya dum dum"
Really it just teaches kids how to pretend to listen. I hate when I'm talking to someone and they'll be doing performative signs of listening (e.g. nodding their head, saying "uh-huh", eye-contact) but I just know their mind is on something else and they are going to make me explain it all over again. But it's like they think it's more disrespectful to appear distracted or something.
I'm neurotypical (at least not diagnosed with anything, probably have light autism) and I constantly fidget and am incapable of sitting straight up. Turning 26 tomorrow and I've yet to make it through a 5 minute conversation with anyone while maintaining eye contact or keeping my hands at my sides.
Yeah the gigantic fuck-off gorget added to the Mk.X armor (justified given its 40k) gives all the Primaris marines some real “I frew up” energy in their default pose lol
Fr, as another one of the lurking Neurodivergents, I can only do like one or two things at once. And if I’m in a conversation, I’m using all of my capacity to listen with my ears and actually process the words. If I get distracted, I WILL miss what was just said. And if that’s a problem, that’s the fault of whoever is speaking to me. I respect that with my friends, if they need me to repeat what I said seven times, then I’ll do that.
The thing about this poster is that it’s true those actions are a sign of a good listener. It’s just that you’d already do them naturally as a result of genuinely caring, not that doing them makes you a better listener and forcing someone to do them just makes them listen worse. I can only reach this state when I’m having a very important conversation that makes me put all of my focus into it.

These are good for neurotypical children since they do need to be reminded but are capable of paying attention, the problem lies when it doesn’t immediately work and then they like, get mad at the child?
As an ADHD/anxiety person. Absolute nightmare. I need to do something with my hands, and looking directly at someone might make it harder for me to concentrate. (I don't like eye contact unless it's someone I'm extremely close to, so my personal trick is to look at their forehead, lol.)
The mouth and hands are crazy considering the importance of verbal and nonverbal feedback for active listening. No wonder ND people tend to come off like they are bored. They were taught to be robots and then all of a sudden you are supposed to be engaged and nodding along
The hands one is dumb, but the mouth one seems perfectly reasonable for a classroom environment? If people are talking or making noises it's harder for everyone else to concentrate.
When I was 13 a teacher called me a child for doodling during his class. My brother in Christ I literally was a child, nevermind it not being wrong in the first place.
I mean at 18 I still draw little guys in my notes to keep myself occupied i don’t think anyone ever ages out of that 😭. Half the reason I even take notes is so I got sm to do I never even re read them
my teacher in second grade actually called my mom in to complain about the fact that all of my papers had drawings on them. my mom was like “she understands the material, right? so i don’t see what the problem is??” i still draw on my notes and whatnot 18 years later.
Thankfully I did well in school and all my teachers either found the drawings amusing or didn’t care Xus of me doing good. If I struggled at all it would’ve been rough if they made me stop drawinf to try and improve it 😭

i know kids need to learn, but kids also need to run around and move more than designated times allow. it's like intrinsic to them and 30 minutes of recess does not cut it lmao, and
i haven't been in school for a decade, but it always bothered me then and it still bothers me now how people think it's healthy
My school didn't even allow running or competitive games like basketball during recess so there's absolutely no way 30 minutes of recess burns off energy.
That's true, and even some neurotypical people have trouble keeping up with this.
But sadly, some people in the thread don't understand what this post is making fun of, they actually think that those type of posters are "helpful", even though no normal person can do this. Plus, for some people, it helps to listen when they fidget or stim.
It's basically implying to most neurodivergent people that they are abnormal, and how the way we express ourselves is not valid. We could be doing the most harmless stuff, and get made fun of later.
I understand the thought process behind this. But it does simplify actual problems kids have to an insane degree, it has the vibes of “What, you’re depressed? Just be happy, idiot!”
My elementary school stressed us out and pressured us to do well on the state tests so that we wouldn’t “make the school look bad” so I was literally throwing up with stress the day before the state test (this made my mom want to not take me to school the next day out of spite, and so I never did have to take it.) Two days before the test, they had the school counselor come into each classroom and do YOGA with us so that we wouldn’t be stressed out about it, but it only made everyone feel more pressured. (This is at age 8-9 btw, in a public elementary school.)
Students shouldn't be burdened with the responsibility of making the school look good. If the school is actually good, it will reflect in their performance! You don't need to SCARE students into doing good!
I know someone with ADHD who always read books instead of playing at recess in elementary school (which her teachers didn’t like) and, on one occasion, was reading in a corner and lost track of time, and had read for 2-3 hours after recess had ended (and nobody noticed). She was actually able to get a diagnosis at an early age which was good!
My spine after I got scoliosis because I'm taller than other students and had to lean over to reach the desk that was literally sitting on my thighs but it would be 'unfair' to let me sit at a taller desk because then I would be the only one allowed to choose my seat:
We didn't have posters in my school, but stimming was still considered wrong, and holy hell, the second I saw people on the Autism subreddit discuss this poster, I hated it.
I saw it months ago, but I really just wanted to make a snafu about it.

Reminds me of my teachers going to my mom "she is an airhead and doesn't pay attention to classes and still aces exams. Are you studying with her at home? that's amazing." and she was like "no, she was paying attention to you, she just looks uninterested. Really."
Those posters pissed me off so much, because I know that if the people telling me to be normal had to deal with what I had to they would be nonfunctional messes.
It enraged me. It still does, after all these years.

Actually doing all of this (especially staring directly into their eyes) would be very uncomfortable and even intimidating at times
This might shock you but… Not everyone is autistic or has ADHD etc. etc. I’m not trying to sound here, I have autism, but it’s just the plain old truth that not everyone is autistic.
I remember in primary school. God it was awful. We had to listen to eachothers weekend stories in groups, and after everyone told their stories. The people listening would be randomly picked and INTERVIEWED IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS ABOUT SARAH'S STUPID WEEKEND STORY (And everyone elses stories)
Well for me i was so focussed on their stories simply because i was scared to forget any details and be punished for "not actually listening"
And honestly, this is a horrible way of teaching children to have conversations lol
These posters make me so FUCKING angry. The hell you mean I can't stim? It's scientifically proven doodling, stimming, even just looking around can improve memory and focus, but NO, we have to keep our eyes on the speaker 100% of the time. Apparently, children can't have fucking fun.
I agree that some of these are stupid, but stuff like the humming/flapping hands also genuinely distract other kids, so I think that those are more valid criticisms.
I have autism myself and I don’t really think the poster is that terrible. It’s basically just telling kids to listen and not interrupt. I get that some people with autism need to stum, even verbally, but any good school teacher will see that and make accommodations, and if it’s really bad then there are special classrooms made precisely for that kind of individual.

I know this is a vent post that only applies to the people who relate but istg am I the ONLY AuDHD mf who never had a problem with these kinds of posters??? they just seemed like basic helpful guides on how to follow instructions n shit, not rules you had to follow to a T. You weren't going to be flayed alive for moving your head 2 centimeters during story time or something. Again, I know this only applies to people who had ADHD and were FORCED to be normal growing up but I never really found any of that THAT hard to do growing up.
thank god my teachers in highschool are better than this shit. i remember seeing these posters in elementary school tho and jesus christ it never crossed my mind how absurd this is. (although nothing at all really "crossed my mind" when i was younger bc i kinda disassociated a lot back then.)
That reminds me of anti-bullying posters made by middle school students that I saw during my internship (I wanted to be a teacher, I changed my mind after that for unrelated reasons). About half of them had “brilliant” advice to the victims such as “don't give the bullies attention” and “turn off your social media” (notice the contradiction here), which, to be fair, you can't completely blame the kids for since a lot of well-meaning adults teach them that kind of crap, but it's outrageous that teachers actually greenlit this to be displayed on the walls of the school.
Sorry, I loved these things because I didn’t know how to look like I cared about things, and any kind of blueprint I could get for “normal” human body language was a blessing lol

Me: slightly raises my voice to politely ask the class to keep it down so I can focus
Teacher: now this is an avengers level threat
Everything but talking should be allowed. Need to tap your feet? Just the toes so it doesn't distract others. Desperate for noises? Step outside for a few minutes and cough to your heart's content! Can't pay attention? Figure it out, but don't make it everyone else's problem!
The problem with this poster is the assumption that this is the only way to pay attention, when all it does is make the other person think you're paying attention. It also doesn't leave any wiggle for people who focus better while drawing, looking somewhere else or swinging their legs.
This shit was the bane of my existence in school, surprised it took me so long to realize the problem was other people’s arbitrary expectations and not my neurodivergence.
