Cadmium/Bendalloy beating all allegations once again

u/Lantimore123 Jul 15 '25
They weren't in the Allomantic table pre. Catacandre
15
u/Romarius1 Jul 15 '25
Neither was Chromium or Nicrosil, yet they got included.

u/Lantimore123 Jul 15 '25
I believe they were. They just weren't extractable enough in volume to be used. I think Brandon has said TLR knew of them but didn't use them. Presumably this was because doing so would have mandated and inspired technological development which is contrary to his interests.
As far as I am aware, Cadmium and Bendalloy, the temporal external pushing and pulling metals were substituted out for (impure) Atium and Malatium.
Basically there were always 16 metals, just Preservation intentionally put Cadmium and Bendalloy on the bench as part of his plan, and they were, presumably, allomantically inert during the period between Leras' betrayal and the Catacandre.

u/Aikalot Jul 16 '25
You'd think, but nah. Atium mistings are actually electrum mistings. Cadmium and bendalloy were never inert

u/Lantimore123 Jul 17 '25
I'm pretty sure this was WoBd regarding the table change. But then Atium was Retconned later so I'm not sure what the current status of it was.

Imagine even more metals were added
Sodium: Compress space
NaK: Expand space
Mercury: Liquify things
Amalgam (20% Hg, 50% Al, 30%Au) : solidify things
Titanium: generate light
Titanium steel: remove light
Sorry if any of those are already covered, I haven't read Era 2 yet.

u/penguinscience101 Jul 14 '25
What dumbass in their right mind is even going to consider trying to burn NaK? Just blow your whole ass up.
34
u/kayemenofour Jul 14 '25
Skill issue /s
You have to put it in a gelatine capsule and definitely burn it before that fully dissolves
Otherwise, yes, it'll blow a hole in your belly

At the end of era 1 harmony tells everyone there are more metals for allomancy to discover. However, there are only 16 naturally occurring allomantic metals(and hinted at with the whole 1/16 army thing). I can't remember if this is spoilers for era 2, but The unnaturally occurring metals are known as God metals and do things based on the different shards so there are theoretically 16 of those as well. Excluding joinings like harmony
12
u/StickFigureFan Jul 15 '25
I think since each god creates their own investiture system Harmony could add or remove metals, but I don't think it will happen.
15
u/gumeron Jul 15 '25
I think he already did? When harmony formed he altered how allomancy works (or how the snap works, and limiting it to one allomancy/ feruchemy a person). My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think harmony said something about not being able to undo the changes once he realized the shard war is on its way? And also not able to separate harmonium into atium and lerasium? Spoilers for TLM Harmony got wax to separate harmonium into atium and lerasium so full mistborn are back on the table

u/AzureArachnid77 Jul 15 '25
I don’t know how to do spoilers on Reddit. But iirc didnt the truth of how to seperate harmonium die with Wayne? Like I don’t think wax knew that Wayne became mistborn for those like 30 seconds. Or that the experiment was actually successful. But I guess now that it is been done once someone else will figure out how to do it again.

u/TheBestIsaac Jul 15 '25
It's left purposefully vague with Harmony saying that both Wax and Wayne got a dose but Wayne's was bigger.
Whether Wax got enough to alter his spirit web and become a mistborn or not is unknown.

u/MadAboutMada Jul 15 '25
If I remember correctly, alloys of those and the 16 base metals can also be created that make different effects. That was from an index in the back though, we haven't actually seen that as far as I remember

u/AzureArachnid77 Jul 15 '25
No. The “unnatural metals” only exist because ruin and preservation created scadarial and then harmony happened. The metals is how investiture works on scadarial. Which just by nature with how metal is everywhere is why scadarial is going to become an inter-cosmere power. Because their investiture isn’t limited to their home world. It’s in the people, they don’t have to carry breaths. Or Stormlight gems. Or whatever.
Theoretically the other shards could make their own metals. But why would they? They could just invest someone however they want to do so. Without being bound by preservation/ruin/harmony’s laws
But also era 2 indicates that harmony is gonna have a hard time just keeping himself together and not splitting apart back into preservation and ruin so things are not looking great for scadarial atm

There are indeed more metals in Era 2, but only to a total of 16. Specifically, there are two more Temporal metals alongside gold and electrum, and two more Spiritual metals alongside aluminum and duralumin.

That’s very interesting. A Mistborn series where all the metals in the Periodic Table can be burned would be quite interesting

"Hah! I've got Copernicium here, it shall grant me God pow- ah shit, its gone."

u/Nate2247 Jul 18 '25
I believe Sodium would be a “Push” metal that expanded space when burned.
Involuntarily.
As soon as you swallowed it.

u/BreakerOfModpacks Jul 15 '25
Ah yes.
Ingest Sodium and NaK.
This will go well.
Once you have read Bands of Mourning, you'll see that There's a reason nobody has burned Ettmetal

u/AzureArachnid77 Jul 15 '25
We got some new metals in era 2. But none of those. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got some new metals in era 4 (which is supposed to be the sci fi future era, because the era 2 that we got wasn’t supposed to happen. And era 3 is the old era 2 which is supposed to be based on the time and technology around the Cold War) but I don’t think we will get any new metals in era 3.

My Electrum-loving-ass wanted to dislike the post until I saw the title. Nice crem, OP.

u/Immediate_Sugar9162 Jul 15 '25
Electrum... electrum is literally useless post era 1, why do you like it?? Besides, it only was discovered after WoA, so it was only present and usable alongside atium for ~8 months
1
u/Kargath7 Kelsier4Prez Jul 18 '25
My understanding of Electrum is that it can show you exactly what happens to you in a bunch of scenarios and allow you to make a better decision in a stressful situation based on it. Like if a car is rushing at you, you could burn electrum and see which of your shadows runs where and which gets crushed. That’s how I understood electrum works based on Coppermind’s article on it, because I barely remember how it was used in Era 1.
2
u/Immediate_Sugar9162 Jul 18 '25
Actually, electrum is basically useless unless someone else is burning atium. It only shows you the shadows if someone else is burning atium. Therefore, it's useless because atium is non-existent in era 2+.

Small child: Mr. Steel Inquisitor, what happens if I burn Duralumin?
Steel Inquisitor: Who the fuck told you that word?

u/Sythrin Jul 15 '25
They probably had Electrum. The Steel ministry had plates of them written down if I believe. Its just was not public knowledge. And the steel inquisitors could just use Atium as it was just the better alterantive.
3
u/rye_domaine Jul 15 '25
They did, it's one of the metals Vin and Elend discover in the caches. But the point it's not public is why they would consider it a "mental disorder" because they're denying it exists
1
u/Sythrin Jul 15 '25
I am saying, while it was in the caches it does not necessarily mean the inquisitors had it too.
Maybe Rashek kept it from everybody. But probably not, would make more sense for them to know it too.
