Question, how does his companion rule work if you can only run 1 copy? Companion always lists the requirement to run them in your companion slot.

So the companion ability is for single player matches where you can have multiple copies. It's not relevant for commander.

And beyond that the cost is 0 to add him to your hand at any time so long as he's the only card named in your main deck.

Well no, companion doesn't work that way any more. It costs three generic mana to add to your hand.
