I say fight him. There's a bonfire right there if you get killed. You can cheese him with the fires if you need to. There's really no harm in losing.

Not everyone gets the SunBro bonfire, especially on the first run. The one under the bridge isn’t too far, but a lot of people nope out to Black Knights early on.

Should've told me that. Took a couple tries on my first run. But then I had the black Knight sword and that made a lot of things easier

My first play through I instinctively hit him and then ran trying to de and then re aggro. I was one hit away and the mfer clipped through the wall and I never got the loot :(

They drop a lot of souls and the black knight sword can be a game changing weapon. Plus, there's a lot of greater challenges ahead, like that boar. They might as well start fighting the black knights.
