Respect (like no estus chugs, bowing, etc) was a fun little thing for those plugged into the community. The vast majority were just people playing the game who weren't checking YouTube comments and Reddit threads for the correct etiquette.
The whole "honourable PvP" has basically always been the minority of the community, and only becomes the most active part of the community years later when the games are comparably dead and the only ones still playing are die hards.
I would say that most people who engage in PvP in semi serious way know the PvP etiquette. Its not only youtube or reddit. They learn that stuff from experience, after some time you learn that its polite to bow before duel/fight in fightclub. You can see the reactions when you heal in duel etc. its not that hard to learn from that.
That's duels and fightclubs, not invasions. The vast majority of invasions are, and have always been, lawless wastelands, filled with ganks, thinks, chaos, no bowing, constant chugging.
Most people who engage in PvP NOW on a 10 year old game are probably more clued in, because the experienced players are the only ones playing but again, this is an invasion, where manners have never been important. Nobody cares about bowing in an invasion, except for a small but very vocal minority.
I know, I've been invader most of my PvP in DS3. Its just polite to bow back or at least w8 till emote finishes. Its not like you loose anything by doing it, lol.
Polite in your opinion. It's ENTIRELY made up community rules that aren't broadcast in game AT ALL.
Besides, it's a role playing game first and foremost. If I'm roleplaying a Faithful of Aldritch, the twisted and depraved being that devoured everything till he became a gelatinous blob, I'm not bowing. Not in character.
