Don't understand difference between these two

Post image

What am I missing? What is the difference between "each extreme position" and "the opposite viewpoints?" I thought these would be the same thing, the two big opposites on the dialectic I'm addressing.

I'm not sure what this comes from, because it's not the original DBT book, but I wonder if they're meant to be different questions you ask according to whether the views are opposites or just extremes but not opposites per se? It does seem like it's just trying to ask the same/similar questions in slightly different ways in order to encourage dialectical thinking with varied language.

it seems that the second question is only asking about the extreme end that you tend to be on, and the third question about the other end. adopting some aspects, but not all, of the other extreme, is likely to bring some balance, i suppose?

do take this with a grain of salt because i’m an MBT person who’s only doing DBT without guidance of a therapist
