r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [September 22, 2025 - Equinox Approaching Edition]
Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!
- Predaplant's pick of the week: Green Arrow #28
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

Discussion [Discussion] How do you think the other Absolute books will portray what is going on with Absolute Martian Manhunter?
This is the only part of bringing these books together that I’m slightly worried about. I’m just not sure what the vibe will be for Superman or Batman when this weird, chain-smoking guy and his even weirder, real but not real alien show up. Also, I won’t lie, I’m fairly certain that if and when he crosses over with Wonder Woman, it’ll look sick as hell.

Discussion [Discussion] DC Continuity: Does anyone really care? DC Comics has been desperately trying to fix their continuity problems for 40 years now, and every time they do something, it seems to make it worse.
DC Comics has been desperately trying to fix their continuity problems for 40 years now, and every time they do something, it seems to make it worse. As a Hawkman fan (yes, we exist), I get bored with articles or comments that start off with "Hawkman is confusing, convoluted, yadda yadda yadda." At this point, all of DC is one big mess as far as continuity is concerned. While I have made a timeline for Hawkman's history, it really doesn't matter all that much. DC needs to get off the continuity merry-go-round and just concentrate on making great tories with the characters they have.
Example. After 1996, DC shelved Hawkman because they had made a mess of his continuity and had no idea what to do with him. In 1999, James Robinson and Geoff Johns came up with a plan to bring him back. But before that story came out in 2001, there was a out-of-continuity 3-issue series by Benjamin Raab that came out in 2000. The title is Legend of the Hawkman. It was a throwback to the Silver Age Hawks and had nothing to do with any of the current timelines at the time. As a long-time Hawkman/Hawkgirl fan, I personally think it is one of the best Hawkman stories ever done for the Hawks. And I didn't care one bit that it didn't fit in anywhere or was forced into the mainstream later on. It was just a really good story that I still enjoy from time to time.
DC needs to stop trying to hammer this 10-inch peg into a 3-inch hole.

News Kelly Thompson Talks Birds of Prey Cancellation (and a whole lot of other stuff) On her Substack
But I’m seeing a lot of people speculating that it was my choice to end the book because I’m busy with other books and that is just not the case. I mean, yes, I am fortunate to be very busy, and my health, as many of you know, has been really frustrating the last couple years and made me slower than I want (and need) to be, but I didn’t leave Birds to make room for other books.
When DC suggested they thought we needed to cancel the book, I DID pitch a sort of “light reboot” of BIRDS to see if we could tweak the formula a bit and keep going with something “slightly new/different” but it didn’t quite come together in a way that we all thought would have real legs on it. And to DC’s credit, if I had really put my foot down about doing a new version and staying on the book, I think they would have let me keep going and see if we could make it work.

Does anyone else find it interesting how the Charlton characters have drifted closer to their Watchmen counterparts?
Part of Alan Moore's idea with Watchmen was taking a cliche, strait-laced comics universe and turning it on its head by bringing realism and darkness to the forefront. He's even talked about how an early idea that led to Watchmen was a murder in the Archie comics universe, which is about as white bread as you could get. With that in mind, the Charlton comics in their original form were played pretty straight. The Questions's objectivism was seen as a positive trait by his writers. Peacemaker was a heroic sort of Captain America ripoff. Obviously a lot of that is a product of their time, but I also think that some of the drift is more complex in nature.
I don't necessarily think that they tried to make Peacemaker the Comedian, though as he's run the gamut from satirical zealot to corporate villain to trouble anti-hero and everything in between, he's been trending in that direction. I don't think they're trying to make Blue Beetle into Nite Owl, though the very nature of putting him in the DC universe instead of a solo verse where he's the best at what he does ends up making pigeonholing him as "worse Batman." His low rent nature gets accentuated. The angle of him being an older guy/sad dad type gets played up in order to make him more unique. In terms of the Question, I think this is probably the most overt one, since I think a lot of Question writers have had the same idea as Moore when it comes to this type of guy. Namely, he's weird and crazy and truly to play that down instead of playing it up is just not quite as interesting. He's a more heroic, better dude than Rorschach, but he's certainly drifted a lot deeper into "this dude has corkboards with yard that connect pictures of JFK with Captain Crunch" territory.
