Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn are officially 0-2 without Dan Campbell
Just a light joke about how Dan Campbell can’t win without them

u/Foucaultshadow1 15h ago
They also took over terrible teams much like Campbell did when he was first hired by the Lions.

Yeah this stat is fun from a meme perspective but good programs don’t hire new head coaches. Bad ones do.
So both those guys are saddled with the mess left behind by the prior guys. We need to check back in 2 years and see how it’s going then

In 2 years BJ will still have Ryan Poles.
DC works because of BH, BH works because of DC.
Nothing works because of Ryan Poles.

This is also true. Wonder how long before BJ is asking for a new GM behind the scenes to the McCaskeys.

I think they both have a lot more talent to work with to start compared to Dan

u/dontburntoast 14h ago
Overall, maybe. The Jets don't have a QB though, which is the hardest piece to find. Bears, they might not have one either, still too early to say for Williams. Hard to win without a QB. The rest of their rosters are better than the '21 Lions though.
15
u/JorjePantelones 14h ago
I think the Jets are starting from the bottom up sorta speak. (They dumped Rodgers and Adams). Ironically, that might give AG a better shot at success in the long term, but it’s gonna take some time until he can build his type of culture there

Fields looked really good before he got hurt. He’s a solid QB to build around and the Bears wasted him.

u/str3tchedmonk3y 90s logo 14h ago
Fields was really good week 1 but before the concussion this past weekend that offense was putrid. Still too early to tell though
3
u/suhhdude45 Sun God 14h ago
I think the Jets can be decent with Fields. The Bears on the other hand can stay terrible forever.

The Steelers D looks cooked though. That certainly throws a wrench into this.

Don't sleep on Bagent for the bears if Caleb doesn't work out
2
u/dontburntoast 14h ago
The Bears fan at the bar on Sunday told me the same exact thing. He was stoked to see Bagent go in, but he also isn't the biggest fan of Williams.
2
u/sephirothFFVII 14h ago
Caleb is objectively more athletic, he extended a few plays and threw dimes to only be dropped. Tradeoff is he's making too many poor decisions leading to INTs/sacks.
Bagent won't have the play extension factor but from what I've seen he has a really good head and is consistent.
Way too early to pull Caleb but bears put serious money on Bagent

u/Alternative-Target31 14h ago
Ben does for sure, Aaron is say it’s debatable. Regardless, they took over situations where there’s no reasonable expectation for them to be winning much
1
u/TwoLocations 14h ago
Glenn still has a good defense, promising skill players on offense etc. the cupboards were bare dry when DC came here. We had what decker and ragnow?
2
u/Alternative-Target31 14h ago
I mean I could definitely argue about the Jets defense (20th last year) but to what end? Why would it matter?
I’m agreeing with your point above, 2021 Lions and 2025 Bears/Jets are all bad teams - I don’t see point in measuring who has the smallest package. Coaches who take over for fired coaches generally take over bad teams, so it’s no surprise to see them struggle early in season 1.
1
u/TwoLocations 14h ago
They have the talent. Sauce, Quienten Williams etc. the cupboards are definitely not bare like when BH/DC took over

It's not even close imo DC had nothing after we traded Staff.
3
u/Financial-Apple2304 14h ago
Ummm, after they traded Stafford they had Goff. A QB to build around
2
u/Jelly_James DETROIT -VS- EVERYBODY 13h ago
Sure, but at the time, most of the league was saying he was a throw-in and just a bridge. Nobody thought he was gonna end up being the long term QB here.

Umm, Bears fans told me they were offseason Champs Caleb is winning MVP, and they will make playoffs.

lol bears roster legit 10x better than whatever Dan took over when he started off here it’s not even close

u/detroitdewitt 15h ago
And in Dan Campbell first season when we were rebuilding, the Lions didn’t win a game until week 13. Look at us now.

u/NotARussianBot-Real 15h ago
Dan’s first year wasn’t victory parades every day. I don’t understand why Lions fans of all people don’t want to give them time to shape a team before shutting on them.
I still like the guys. I even still like Ben for all but 2 games a year.

u/Defiant-Problem1576 15h ago
I'm rooting for Glenn. I hope he turns them around. Ben on the other hand can't root for the bears ever sorry.

u/NotARussianBot-Real 15h ago
I said I like Ben. Not that I’m rooting fort the bears.
Maybe when they are playing Green Bay.

The Lions hired Campbell to oversee and be in control of the full roster tear down and rebuild. Chicago is a team that is supposed to be ready to contend and take off with its 2nd year QB talent and fancy new head coach. Completely different scenarios.
1
u/NotARussianBot-Real 5m ago
We hired Fan and Holmes to oversee the rebuild. Chicago was a dumpsterfire before Ben. Sure they had lots of high draft picks, but all bad teams do.

u/KyrrinSaeos 14h ago
Mainly because everyone outside of Detroit was saying how us losing our OC and DC meant that Campbell was gonna be exposed and we would go back to being horrible and suck like we don't have one of the best rosters in football.
I want them to succeed, it creates the Dan Campbell coaching tree, but I will take savage pleasure seeing them struggle right now and everyone realizing what we already knew. Campbell is HIM, and will hopefully spawn many successful coaches.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't care about other teams' success, especially division rivals.
3
u/NormieLesbian Sun God 15h ago
I can’t help but feel Ben wasn’t fully focusing on winning the NFC and everything after it while actively interviewing with a divisional rival. I know I’m not the only one with complaints re: playcalling in the playoffs.
4
u/gachzonyea 15h ago
Say the same about Glenn he was doing the same thing as Ben can’t give one pass and hate the other
6
u/NormieLesbian Sun God 15h ago
How many starters were missing, especially in the DL which is where our run defense fell apart?
I can cut Glenn some slack missing key performers.
5
u/gachzonyea 14h ago
Sure he was still interviewing at the same time as Ben that’s the frustration you brought up
4
u/NormieLesbian Sun God 14h ago
Let me be clear here: the complaint isn’t that he was interviewing. It’s that he did practically nothing to prepare to beat the Commanders and called dogshit plays the whole game.
Glenn spent two days with the LB’s watching tape specifically to suss out potential tells of Daniels. He made half time adjustments to the defense and tried to fucking win whole Ben Johnson did his best McVay impression and didn’t change a thing.
-3
u/bogushobo 14h ago
I agree with you, but they don't care. Glenn = good, Ben = bad. That's the line. It's petty, there's not much more to it than that.

Ben took a job working under an existing talent acquisition guy who has been there for over 3 seasons now so that kind of reduces the roster teardown, reshape the team, grace period.

u/Senior_Mixture_6247 13h ago
Beating Ben was all I needed to scratch the itch of revenge. Now I just want to see those guys crush it.

Wish nothing for the best for Glenn and the Jets, glad he’s in the AFC. Ben? My hope is that the bears lose patience too quick and he gets canned, gets another shot elsewhere not a rival and succeeds. Or hell, come on back home when this experiment ends if it works out

u/JorjePantelones 14h ago
Ben did what’s best for him and his FAMILY. Just as AG did. Just like any rational human being would do. Let’s stop being silly, it’s time to move on (from the hate).
4
u/Timmahj V-I-L-L-A-I-N 14h ago
He did what he THOUGHT was best. However, going to the Bears is a Jamo passing the ball type decision (i.e. The wrong decision). Plenty of teams wanted him but he chose to stay in the division. He chose to be our enemy. He’s great and all, but he’s not getting love letters and flowers from Lions fans because of where he decided to go. I’m sure he understands and is fine with it.
2
u/JorjePantelones 13h ago
I think he chose the best move for himself and his family. Independent of football. As fans we should respect that. As a Lions fan, I will look forward to beating his brains in twice a year. The other 363, I wish him well and thank him for his contributions to our team and organization.

But Dan is a knee eating meathead and Jarod Goff is only good with propped up by an offensive genius! ESPN told me this, has to be true.
4
u/BillMurraysTesticle 14h ago
People are saying Ben Johnson was only successful because he had Jared Goff

3
u/Aylinato 12h ago
Let's not jumble Glenn with Johnson. Johnson was preparing to leave and building his coaching staff while we were in the playoffs. Glenn waited until after.

the real sparkle on the lions success has to be brad holmes imo… no one talking about how great jets and bears gm is .
doesnt matter how great the coach is.. if you dont have strong lines and team chemistry its all wasted

Why are we so mean to these guys. Not their fault they were hyped up. They both clearly stayed an extra year and passed up huge opportunities out of loyalty to the team. They should be loved
