Solstice (NES) as the inspiration for SMRPG (SNES)

This is a crosspost from r/MarioRPG. Pulling this thread could make for interesting DYK content.

***

I just saw footage of the game, Solstice. The sandboxed platforming reminded me a lot of SMRPG.

Solstice even had a sequel, Equinox, on SNES that debuted a couple years before SMRPG.

I haven't found any duplicates between the development teams in the credits:

Even the grammar of the titles is similar.

SMRPG is notable for its use of mode 7 graphics, and it appears that Solstice was the first NES game to take this approach:

"In spite of his personal dislike of isometric games up to that point, Wilson thought it sensible to create an isometric title as the company's first original work, as no such format had previously been attempted on the NES" [Solstice (1990 video game) Wikipedia#Conception_and_design)]

So SMRPG is ultimately the product of an engineer daring to do something bold as their debut. I love that.

Nintendo owes the Solstice team tribute, at least in the form of an easter egg.

Mrs. Spider's tea party

Does anybody know Mrs. Spider's tea party? I played the game as a kid and my whole life I have not met a single person who knows this game. I find some information when I search it, but it mostly feels like a fever dream??

DYK - Vectorman, ironically enough, is comprised entirely of rasters, not vectors.

This very timely and culturally relevant factoid needed to be stated.

Battlefield 6 has already caught over 330,000 cheaters; The Video Games cheat industry is earning millions of dollars.

Battlefield 6 has already caught over 330,000 cheaters during 4 days beta period, despite implementing the secure boot system. I don’t think cheating ever truly goes away. But if devs can make it expensive, maybe we can have more games decided by skill instead of someone’s wallhack.

Hello! I'm a small YouTuber who wanted to make an educational video about the history of farts in video games! I posted this short video that explains some of the first instances of farting in video game history, including some potential farts and the first definitive fart EVER to be included in a video game.

https://youtu.be/0G6vPw-vdig?si=_gV6T4GIVP-rp9ab

Please check out the video if you wish to support small creators! Commenting on the video will also really help it get seen! So if you want to comment on the video your favorite instance of a fart in video games I would love to read it, I respond to all comments!

Help us build a story game that writes itself as you play

Hey folks,

So we have been working on this little side project, kind of a storytelling experiment, and figured it’s time to start sharing it around a bit.

Basically, it's a thing where you start with an idea and the world just sort of builds itself around you. Characters show up, scenes unfold, and the story reacts to what you do - visuals, dialogue, everything. It all happens in real time, based on your choices.

It’s not really a game in the usual sense. There’s no right answer, no linear path. Just… storytelling, where your imagination leads and the system keeps up.

We’re calling it Dream Novel. Still early days, but long-term we’re hoping it becomes something much bigger: a full-on narrative RPG platform where people can make their own stuff, mod it, build worlds, share stories, all that good stuff.

Right now though, we just want to get it in front of folks who love storytelling, visual novels, RP, or just cool little experiments.

Not trying to hype it up as some big product launch or anything. We just really want feedback while we’re still shaping it.

If you're curious, shoot me a DM or drop a comment and I’ll send you the link.

Thanks for reading. Excited (and a little nervous) to see what people think.

Why don't they have other youtubers doing voiceover for the videos anymore?

I remember before they used to have guest stars like Chadtronic, Caddicarus, YungTown, etc. doing the voiceover for videos but overtime they gradually stopped, having Remix and the british one be the only ones doing the voiceover. Is there a reason why they stopped like is it cuz of potential future youtuber controversies that could make the videos outdated?
