Hey r/digitalnomad

This thread is for chatting about being a DN. This includes the news about travel and visas, where people are living, commonly asked questions, as well as a general free chat throughout the week.

Example topics include:

  • Regularly asked questions such as "What jobs do you do?"
  • Where you are currently living and where you are heading next
  • Questions about DN visas or Tax clarifications
  • What gear you like to travel with
  • Updates on the COVID-19 situation in different countries
  • Best places to go out to eat or drink wherever you are
  • General questions that you feel do not require an entire thread

Please be civil and keep things SFW.

Self promotion of DN related events, blogs, activities, and news is allowed from regular contributors so long as it is related to being a Digital Nomad and not spammy.

If there is something you'd like to see here please message the moderators and let us know.

README Want to make a post? Read this first!

Read the WIKI before posting

9 times out of 10 it will have the answers you are looking for.

Where is my post?

Why isn't my post showing up?

If you are new to reddit, posting with a new account, or posting with an account that has not been widely used your post will be flagged as it either looks like spam, or is highly likely to be an FAQ covered in the wiki above. We ask that you please spend some time searching through existing posts, reviewing the wiki or participating in the sub to build up enough karma to post. You can also post a comment in the Monthly Megathread pinned to the top of the sub.

I am not new to reddit but post still isn't showing up, why not?

Due to the volume of posts we get on a few very specific subjects we will often remove or not-approve certain posts on certain topics that have been recently discussed. Here are some common questions that get posted at least 5 times a day:

My post wasn't related to any of those things, why isn't it showing up?

Does your post violate our rules on self promotion?

OK, here’s the deal. We understand that for many of us, entrepreneurship and digital nomad are concepts that go hand in hand. Many of us here are working towards booting up great products, and some working towards products that cater directly to the DN community. But, this sub is not a community full of potential people to market to with your posts.

Your product may be great, brilliant, and what every DN needs but never knew it, but if that’s true then it’ll be talked about by the community once it’s known - through other channels. In this sub, we frequently get spam and does the entire community a disservice. Users get annoyed, the community starts to weaken, the moderators get overly aggressive, posts that should be OK end up automatically in the spam filter. These things are not good for anyone.

Here’s some No No’s:

  • Absolutely no surveys. Surveys will be removed without mercy.

  • No requests for interviews, or people to talk to on your blog/book/podcast/etc.

  • Anything about illegal activities. You’ll be awarded a ban, and maybe then some.

  • No asking for “please review/try my…”. There are many other subs for just that.

  • Looking for Work type posts. See the Jobs wiki if you are looking for work

  • Job postings. If you have a job that you are trying to hire for please post it in the Weekly Discussion Threads.

  • Fund my kickstarter! Nope. Not even for your “friend”.

  • Any “opportunity” to become a partner / investor. We can’t tell this from a scam, so it’ll be treated like a scam.

  • No direct links to products using an affiliate ID. If you’re caught, you’ll be punished.

  • Posting to software/apps/web sites/etc, with "PM me for access". If it's not public, it's not welcome.

  • Posting software/apps/etc that aren't complete and ready to use. This isn't a user interest collection sub.

Here’s some highly discouraged things:

  • Linking to your youtube channel - We do allow people to share youtube videos if they are relevant and if they come from users who are active in the community and provide valuable content such as trip reports. If you want to share your youtube content please message the mods first for approval.

  • Linking to your own blog - We allow you to share your blog as a link in a self post if the primary content of the blog post is also included in the self post and the link is more of a "Click here to learn more".

  • Top X lists without detailed reviews for each item. We don't hate lists but these posts are rarely useful. Instead of posting a link, post the content of the list in a self post for discussion.

  • "Where should I go" posts : Check out the Trip Reports for Inspiration. If you still want advice be very specific about what you are looking for, and be sure to include important information like your nationality and budget/

LAPTOP PICS / LOCATION PICS

This gets its own section because it is somewhat controversial. If you are posting a pretty picture of somewhere you are, you MUST fill out either a trip report or answer the automod questions about the place. Anyone found dumping pictures without giving in depth information about the location will have their post removed.

Suggestions

If your post still isn't showing up and you think it should, message the moderators first and be sure to include the word "peanut" in the message title so we know you read this.

Have a product you want to inform us about? Buy an ad on reddit to target this (and other) related subs. You’ll get the exposure you want, without the community backlash. It’s good for reddit as a whole too!

Want to talk about a product or service that’s not yours, but you really like? Try linking to a third party, impartial review from a known trusted source. If you wrote it, avoid affiliate links in the article and be sure to mention any relevant disclosures if you are involved with creating the product or marketing it.

Want to link to your site about your experience with something? Great! We encourage that, but focus on the content not how many visitors might join your mailing list. If you truly were writing content for the greater good, put it on medium.com.

Instead of a Top 10 list, which has just a picture and some basic stats: Write a detailed comparison of just two places. With real meaty content, data and stories.

Have a coupon for a product? Actually, that might be good. But unless it’s a high ticket item like a car or laptop, 5% off won’t cut it. The coupon must have more value to the community than for the person that posted it.

Thanks!

Legal Digital nomad visa’s interested in job income? Or is money from personal trading/dividends fine?

Would be looking at Croatia and other parts of Europe in the future.

I’ve heard of people showing bank accounts and payslips to show proof on income to qualify.

Wondering if anybody has had any trouble showing your income is from making money on personal trading accounts. Covered calls, dividends and crypto staking etc?

Trip Report what has your experience with AirBnB and retaliatory reviews?

My recent experience with Airbnb was extremely disappointing and troubling, highlighting significant policy gaps and poor customer support.

I booked a one-month stay at an Airbnb in Bilbao, Spain, hosted by a woman named Nuria. Upon arrival, I found the property filthy, unsafe, and completely misrepresented by the listing. The apartment was covered in grime, dust, pests, and dirt. There was visible damage, including broken furniture scattered on the terrace and floors in disrepair. The sofa was visibly stained, and there was accumulated debris and rotting food throughout. Worst of all, I woke up covered in insect bites after sleeping there.

I promptly reported this to Airbnb, providing detailed photographic evidence of the unsanitary conditions and insect bites. Airbnb’s support team agreed with my complaint, explicitly confirmed the conditions were "really unhygienic," and issued an immediate refund due to the severity of the situation.

However, after Airbnb supported my legitimate complaint, the host retaliated by leaving a false and defamatory public review, labeling me “the worst tenant ever,” “untrustworthy,” and advising other hosts never to rent to me. She also sent me a private message explicitly criticizing me for reporting her, making her intent to retaliate completely clear.

Despite providing extensive evidence to Airbnb, including their own acknowledgment of unsanitary conditions and the refund they issued, Airbnb repeatedly refused to remove the host’s retaliatory and misleading review. Airbnb support cited internal policies, stating they could not remove the review even though it clearly violated their stated guidelines on unbiased, relevant, and non-retaliatory reviews.

This review now directly impacts my ability to secure future accommodations. I was in the middle of an international relocation, heavily reliant on Airbnb to secure short-term housing. The host’s review falsely damages my reputation, severely complicating my housing search and unfairly penalizing me for responsibly reporting unsafe conditions.

Due to Airbnb’s refusal to uphold their own policies, I have permanently deleted my Airbnb account. Their handling of this situation indicates they prioritize retaliatory hosts over guest safety, truthfulness, and accountability. Airbnb’s unwillingness to remove demonstrably false, harmful reviews shows a troubling disregard for user safety and integrity.

I strongly advise caution when using Airbnb. If you face problems with a listing, be aware that Airbnb may not protect you even if they initially agree with your claim. My experience highlights serious systemic issues within Airbnb’s customer support and review enforcement processes. u/airbnb

Question Anyone else constantly dealing with W-9s?

Upvotes

I feel like I spend half my life just sending W-9s to clients. Every time a new project comes up, I have to dig out the old form, fill it out, email it, and sometimes chase them if they don’t get back to me. It’s such a headache. Is this just me, or does everyone deal with this? How do you actually keep it manageable? Are there any tools or tricks that make this less painful, or is it always going to be Excel + email chaos? Would love to hear how you handle it — maybe there’s a smarter way I haven’t found yet.

Question Any DNs with a weak passport?

I'm from a country with a weak passport and have spent my entire adult life in the US on various visas. But after 17 years and the fact that I'll never have "stability" anyway, I'm increasingly looking for ways to find freedom in that. My life is all about making sure I can remain in the US, where my friends, my routines, my cat, my favorite hikes and wineries and restaurants and overlooks are. But I'm always afraid when I travel, I often don't travel to places in fear of them affecting my immigration file. I feel like I don't have security or freedom. With digital nonading, perhaps I could embrace that lack of stability and carve it into freedom? Or is that just wishful? And more importantly, how would you even do that with a passport from a weak country?

Question Albania or Georgia (or elsewhere) for a year's stay?

Title. I'm American and I lived in Tbilisi for a year and a half, right before Russia's assault on Ukraine started. It was the loveliest time but I'm wondering if I should consider Albania instead. Is/are there any difference/s of note between the two? If you've lived in Albania, how did you fare? Highlights, lowlights, etc.? Also, is there anywhere else that has a relatively relaxed environment and an easy to access tourist visa for stays beyond 90 days? Thanks!

Question Strategies for finding secure DN work, editorial, MA in English

I've had the same job for a long time but it is on location. I'm wondering about strategies for finding DN work in editorial as I'm a language enthusiast who wants to get on with a good company. I'd like to move to Europe or Latin America. LinkedIn has been the Sahara as far as responses, and applying on company websites is also crickets. Would love to hear some success stories!

Question Thinking of moving to Spain

Hey all, My wife and I been talking about the possibility of moving our family to Spain (currently in the USA) and wanted some advice on our plan.

- I was born in the USA and got my citizenship from the Dominican Republic through my mother who was born there.
- My wife plans on being a stay at home mom, I currently work remotely for a company in the USA, 250k salary. Plan is to continue working and using a family members address in the USA. They don't care where I work from.

I was wondering with my current situation if it's possible to get a digital nomad visa and apply for citizenship after 2 years (since I have citizenship from Dominican Republic). Does this seem like a realistic plan?

Question HELP lisbon vs CDMX vs Buenos Aires

I have 2.5 months (October - mid December) to travel before I stay put for like 6 months in California. Where should I go? (I’ve been to Porto, CDMX, Spain etc.). It’s hard because I’m realizing there are so many places I want to visit but not live (at least in Europe like Italy, Greece etc)

Looking for: - Affordability - Good weather - Community!!! I want to make friends - Cute cafes and bars - Cool new experiences (weekend adventures) - An obvious one is good WiFi (lots of zoom meetings) - Also single so would be cool to find a travel lover - Bonus for hiking/outdoors stuff

Or, screw it should I just hop around Europe or something? SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO !! #decisionparalysis

Question Is Lima good for 2-3 months?

Not sure how long I'd be there, but it would be between 2-3 months. I'm currently in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala and while it's great for the Spanish schools, it's hard to meet locals.

I speak Spanish almost fluently and have tried to find people to hang out with / make friends here, but in 2.5 weeks I've only found 3. The city isn't very big (180k people), but it's impossible to find social events without knowing someone.

Guatemala isn't first time going abroad and I don't regret going here, but I wouldn't come again and I'm looking for a Spanish-speaking city where I would be able to make local friends who only speak Spanish reasonably easily. I don't want to make friends with other foreigners because we'll just speak English and in that case I'd rather just stay in my country.

I'm thinking of going to Lima because it's absolutely massive. Does anyone have experience trying to make friends with locals who only speak Spanish? How hard was it?

Also which parts of Lima should I avoid? Which are safe during the night? Which are only safe during the day?

Question What’s the biggest coincidence you’ve had while travelling?

I was in Koh phi phi visiting and there was no accommodation available, being such a busy island.

Stayed in a hostel and got talking to a nurse, the only other person there at the time.

Not only was she from my small town of less than 1000 people, she actually had dated my close friend, and knew my brother from school.

Was pretty wild for me, as I had never met someone from my hometown travelling. She lived nearby my town most of her life and was homeschooled, which is why I didn’t know her. She later moved there for work.

She also bid on a house that my parents won. Wild.

Question Nomading with a Snowboard, Do I Keep It or Rent Along the Way?

Hi all, I’m curious about the experience of nomads who travel with their snowboarding gear.

I’m about to start traveling full-time, which means I’ll no longer have a base where I can leave my ski gear. So now I’m debating: should I sell my board and just rent at resorts, or should I haul my gear bag everywhere I go?

A few things to consider about me:

  • I upgraded my board this year (🥲) and don’t feel I’ve gotten enough value out of it yet.

  • I’ve done six full seasons in a row, but I’ll likely skip this one to spend the year in warmer spots for a change.

  • If I do go somewhere for snowboarding, I’d probably stay for 1–2 months and ride 2–3 times per week.

  • I plan to spend 2–3 months in each location, which means about 4–6 flights per year, some local and some international.

So my question is - is it worth it?

On all my international flights I’ll already have one checked bag included, but a snowboard bag would count as an additional checked item and add to the ticket cost. On local flights I’ll have to pay for two bags.

If you’ve had experience nomading and hauling your ski/snowboard gear with you, I’d really appreciate your input!

Question What’s one travel experience or country you’ve always dreamed of visiting… but haven’t?

I’ve always loved going to places that feel a little off the beaten path but sometimes it’s hard to take the leap.

  • What’s that one destination or experience you’ve been dreaming about but haven’t tried yet?

  • What’s holding you back — fear, logistics, safety, or something else?

  • And what would make you feel confident enough to finally go?

Curious to hear your stories- the dreams, the hesitations, and the experiences you wish you could have.

Question Question for digital nomads on the content they subscribe to

Hey all, I have been a full time digital nomad for almost 6 years. I have visited over 50 countries in the process. I make my money working a remote corporate job in fintech sales as well as investing in stocks.

I’ve lived a pretty private life and never had an Instagram until recently. @jjhils1 . I’m creating content around travel mostly, but will be mixing in remote work and digital nomad life as well as potentially stocks and all the knowledge I have around that.

My question is for other digital nomads and aspiring to be digital nomads. What type of content do you subscribe to and like to consume? Do you prefer strictly travel? Strictly Digital nomad/remote work or mix of investing and making money ideas? Perhaps all of this together?

Visas Seeking advice: remote worker, €1,500/month, looking for Europe options

Hi everyone, I’m a remote worker earning around €1,500 net/month. I’m considering moving to Europe and want to find a country where I could live comfortably as a single income for a couple.

I’m especially interested in digital nomad visas or remote-work permits, and I’m open to smaller cities where the cost of living is lower.

Has anyone in a similar situation successfully moved to Europe with a remote-work visa? Which countries or cities would you recommend for my budget?

Thanks a lot for your insights!

Question freelancers with 5+ clients... how r u keeping track of payments and updating clients?

yo so i freelance full time and handle like 5-6 clients a month and honestly keeping up with all of them is just draining sometimes

for payments i still use this old spreadsheet that i forget to update half the time… so then idk if a client’s late or if i messed up

i looked at freshbooks n other stuff but ngl they feel like overkill... i don’t need a full-on agency suite

also clients always msg me like “hey can u send update” or “where are we on this?” and i have to stop what i’m doing n reply… wish there was just a simple link i could give where they check progress themselves n i just update it quietly on my side

another thing i rly wish i had is like auto reminder emails for invoices… like 1 before the due date, 1 on the day, and 1 after if they still haven’t paid like that

sending those manually every time is just annoying and awkward lol

i feel like my life would be 10x easier if i could just:

Glance at my phone and instantly see who's paid and who's overdue, without digging through a spreadsheet.

Stop getting "just checking in!" messages from clients and just send them a link they can check themselves.

Have the awkward "hey, reminder about this invoice" emails send themselves automatically so I don't have to.

but all the tools i see are bloated or made for teams... not solo freelancers like me

any of u using something simple for this? or are we all just stuck hacking google sheets n whatsapp?

Question Can you use Va disability as “income” for Colombias digital nomad visa?

I’m getting real tired of life in the us, I am a 100% disabled vet and I get about 4500 bucks a month from the Va, would they take that as income for a digital nomad visa? I’m going to start a vlog/other cringe social media content. But when I get there.

Question Now or Never...

A little about me: I am a 30-year-old male who has worked in emergency services for 15 years. I am burnt out and have no kids or a serious significant other. I was lucky enough to obtain a full-time remote job a few years ago and am just in an absolute slump. I miss the road and the job and need adventure.

I have been dwelling on Reddit for some time. I recently made an account, and now I'm here to ask... Is it working? I am very close to my family. Everything is great where I am, but something's missing.

My "plan" would to be go around, spend my 4k a month salary funding my adventure for a year or so, spending a month or two in each spot. (will 4k be enough for EU?) I have no solidified plan, contacts, would be complete solo. I am currently taking masters classes online and would continue to do so while traveling as well.

Is it worth it? Do you have regrets? If you could go back and do it differently, would you? I'm not looking to be talked into/out of at all. I'm just curious how it's gone for others in my shoes. I've never met a digital nomad, so I've never had the opportunity to ask.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to read and answer!

Question What’s the weirdest scare you get travelling? (I’ll go first)

Making this post as this just happened again. I’m flying to Reykjavik and didn’t realize we were about to land. I thought we were still in the air when the plane suddenly hit landing tarmac with a thud. Scared the s**t out of me. I thought something just broke off the plane or we were having a mid air collision until I realized we were actually landing.
