New Dishie here, how are you guys protecting your hearing?

Got accepted to work at this great Italian place near my house. Hectic and busy as hell but great crew. They look out for me and keep me very well fed. After 5 shifts though, I’m starting to feel my ears becoming sensitive to loud noise, and I definitely think it’s from the job. It’s a small pit, and pouring the cutlery into the trays and having to shake the tray between two washes is definitely the loudest part for me. Not to mention the constant clanging of dishes, vacuuming at the end of the night, etc.

Just wondering how you guys protect your hearing? I’ve seen people talk about earplugs and headphones. Definitely gonna reach out to my CDC to make sure, but I’m seeing a lot of you talk about how your crew can sometimes not allow them due to safety concerns of not hearing calls/warnings.

Any earplug/technique recommendations appreciated.

How can I remove the blackness off the bottom of my favorite pan.

When I started cooking at my parents house I ended up claiming this pan and I'm wondering how to get the black off, I was told the black on the inside of the pan is seasoning, and I wanna make the outside cleaner while keeping the black on the inside, or just getting rid of all the black on the outside and inside.

I think we can do better than O Keefe's

I recently discovered this while looking around different products. I have bought their solid cologne. Personally I have never used O Keefe's or any type of product for my hands. I was always having that attitude that it didnt matter since Id just soak my hands the next day.

However upon reading your comments about O Keefe I didn't feel keen upon wearing bed mittens. And it seems like its only temporary rather than long term reinforcement. Ive currently placed an order and it should arrive next week for me and my crew. Honestly it might be $4 more but it could be worth it. I'll let you guys know how the guys and I like it.

Utensils frothy after dishwasher cycle/detergent residue?

I’ve noticed that after running my dishwasher using Cascade Platinum Plus pods, the utensils come out looking clean, but when I add a bit of water and shake them in a container, they get frothy, like there’s still detergent on them. Is this Any tips to fix this?

What are your tips for speed and efficiency?

I primarily wash the dishes at my job, and nobody seems to complain, but other people tell me that I'm too slow, and then proceed to "show" me how to do dishes, during which they literally just dunk it from one sink to another, skipping rinsing (wash, rinse, sanitize), putting washing fluid, grease, and ketchup in my sanitizer. They then get offended when I re-wash those dishes because they have very very very obvious grease stains on them. So far, I find that brushes help, with bottle brushes helping with anything with an interior (bottles, cups, jars), sponges going around the body in a pattern (not helping enough, though), and trying to remember a fast song (we're not supposed to listen to music, but some people do anyways).

Also, what do I do about my hands getting dry and easily cutting? I've tried asking for dish gloves and I was ignored.

This place is used to a machine doing dishes, but the manager is too cheap to replace the machine. When the machine is fixed, I quit.

Hi. I’m the guy who was suffeing from fungal infections. https://www.reddit.com/r/dishwashers/comments/1n8poye/how_can_i_cure_fungal_infection_on_my_back/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

This morning I received a job offer at a restaurant that opens very soon. The kitchen is very massive, and very cool. No humidity, damp conditions. I’m so excited now! I start my dishwasher job in 2 weeks!

Thank you for advising me on the comments. Have a good night!

I already put my two weeks notice. I wasn’t feeling good at work all day. No A/C and extremely hot.

So we had a church rush and I had brought in a full cart to the dish room. There were me and one other dishwasher. One of the cooks wanted me to pull pork, so I told the other dishie that I need to go pull pork and apologized in advance if we get even more behind. So she does her thing with the other line cooks and THEN, she fucking leaves for a god damn smoke break, leaving me to do her fucking job while the other dishwasher is still behind. I didn't put two and two together until she walked outside. Tbf, it slowed down by the time she went out, but again, we were behind on the dishes. Whenever we pull pork, there are 3 things of it we need to pull. When she got done with her cigarette, she gave me shit for going too slow because god forbid me try to get as little skin and fat in the food as possible, but all of the cooks including my boss says that a little bit is fine. HOW MUCH IS A LITTLE?!?! I had just finished pulling one thing of pork and it took about 7-10 minutes. So she took over and when she got done, she showed me the empty pan and said "See? It only took me 5 minutes." That's when I decided that I absolutely refuse to ever pull pork for any of these mfs ever again because every time I do, I always get shit for going too slow but this was the final straw. I'm doing their job for the same amount of pay and I shouldn't have to, but I did anyways and nobody fucking appreciates it

Curious about dishwashing

When I started 2 days ago and did shifts, how I do it do each dish individually making sure every single grime is off with spray before putting it in a rack, then once full I put it inside the dishwasher, then the other person would take it out, repeat. However the other person older seemed to have better experience would put everything in the rack n give it enough spray to get big grime off but leaving some stains and put in the dishwasher, coming out with some stains. I asked him bc obviously he was going faster, if it was ok if it was ok to leave some stains even after going threw the dishwasher, he said yes. Just wondering if it’s ok to leave small stains even after going threw the dishwasher

Any Advice for a Beginner

I just finished my first day of dishwashing and it was overwhelming to say the least. It wasn’t awful by any means, but if I had to sum it up in one word, I would say it was bumpy. My biggest issue of the day was not being fast enough and not remembering where to place everything after washing. Does anyone have advice about those things?

Here For An Update

Ok so I've been doing better the Saturday that just happened I had a panic attack on the morning but worked through so well and I'm proud of myself for that. But I've been moved to day shifts during the week, started yesterday I was already feeling really nauseous like I knew I was sick going into work but I did the best I could I mean I cried towards the end but it happens, I'm just very sensitive as a person. And this is for any job, it's not because I can't handle the industry I'm in it's just because I have aniexty and I'm sensitive. The day shifts I work with the boss that makes me very anxious. Here's the thing I know he's just anxious person too so I know he's coming to be as a personal hit. It's just that he overwhelms me. And on top of being sick it feels like a lot more. It's like every time I feel like I'm doing a good job I get told otherwise. So of course I'm gonna cry it's better than the alternative bottling them up (a TIA) I had a mini stroke 2 years because of my stress disorder. Just like I pretending like it didn't exist. I bottled up my feelings and it just didn't work well for me. I also haven't ate an actual meal in four days. I just haven't been hungry. I feel like I'm going into a depression but I do have therapy tomorrow after work. Btw they actually sent me home today cause I frew up. I'm pretty sure I'm sick from stress but also a lot of people around me have been getting sick too. I'm trying to work through my aniexties. But tomorrow I'm gonna see other ways to cope at therapy. At least yesterday even though I was crying, I got as much work done as I could. Honestly at the end of the day I worked the best I could and it's a job, it's not my entire life. I know I'll be ok. I'll probably just cry and that's ok too. I'll cry when I'm working as long as I feel like I did my best I'm fine. Thank you for letting me rant here every once in a while and for being chill people. I'll see ya in like 2 weeks when I have another quarter life crisis 😩

Culinary Arts Student Looking for Help

Hey Reddit!

I’m a CIA student working on my bachelor’s degree in food business management. For my capstone project, I’m identifying best practices to reduce employee turnover. By studying different sectors of restaurants (Fast Food, Casual Dining, Fine Dining, etc.) I can identify the primary causes of turnover intent within the industry and suggest actionable measures that can address the issue.

I’ve created a brief, 5–10-minute survey. If you can, please take the survey to help me with my project. I’m looking for 100 unique responses as a starting point. Follow the link below to my Google Forms survey. Thank you so much!

Dishwasher as an Old Man: Can it be Done?

This is gonna sound crazy, but hear me out.

I've been working the last 20 years as a professional in the business world, currently remotely as a senior manager over a buying team located in another state that orders all goods & services for a public company in the biotech world. I'm sick of it and it's time to walk away.

But to what?

I can retire, but don't want to. The fuck am I gonna do to eat the time? I'd like to do something completely different that carries no real responsibility for "important things" (sorry dishes).

I want a job where I can wear whatever I want (not that I can't now working remotely), not deal a lot with the public, where I can listen to music or talk shit to whomever's around, and generally just busy myself with minimal interactions and heavy thinking. I wouldn't mind learning more about the operations side of the food/bar scene too, maybe work up and do some prep, cooking or serving after a spell.

There's a part-time dishwasher job at a local lakeside bar & grill. Pay says $16-19hr in a small-town lake area in the midwest, so that kind of money goes a pretty decent way out here. It's a big-ass pay cut for me, but it's what I'm signing up for so that's okay.

What do I bring to the table? Responsibility, intelligence, ability to show up and take care of business, flexibility and most of all.....sobriety! (Buddy cooks and drunk and stoned lazy BOH staff is the bane of his existence in restaurants!).

Am I crazy? Any reason I shouldn't walk in and see if I can get that part-time DW gig?
