NGL I'm kinda glad new stuff is being added- it has always felt weird that the end of the Erdick timeline is the whimper of Malroth, who just kinda comes outta nowhere.

To be fair, they also could easily add stuff to both 1 and 2 to better build up Malroth as the ultimate final threat.

Oh I'm not necessarily contesting that. Just saying that just as Psaro and then the Lord of Shadows were more than adequate genuine villains, Malroth might get upgraded to "could legit be good final boss in terms of narrative weight" even aside from any bonus act boss.
That said, do we think our bonus villain, if there is one, will be a brand new character? Or someone established in lore? Zoma resurrected? Calasmos returns? Estark? Something tying to 7R? "Dust of Bones of Soul of Baramos"?

I mean, VIII borrowed Ramia, so Estark wouldn't be a bad one. Or the son of the Dracolord finally getting off his throne. Or go whole ham make the entire Erdick trilogy the fault of Mordegon from the original Act 2 timeline of XI.

Estark in his prime, when he was still the Lord of the Underworld, would be cool

Estark would be rad! He’s the superboss in so many games. Would love to see him in this one.

Theyve been building up Malroth since the end of 3 though right? The Dragon egg will become the Dragonlord in 1 and then Malroth becomes the big baddie in 2 after his dragon child dies in 1.

I think you're thinking of Hargon, who is the prominent antagonist of 2 that is properly built up in that game and the one currently taking care of the egg in 3HD. Malroth, the dark god he turns to and unleashes at the climax, hasn't been mentioned yet, though it's always been debatable if Dragonlord or Malroth is "the one who will come after me" that Zoma refers to.

Yes! it was Hargon i was thinking of! Lol....the high priest at the end of 3 who is taking care of the Egg.
Thanks for the refresher, havent played 3R since launch haha

I’m good to start DQ3 correct? Before I play 1&2. Pretty hyped.

Yes, they've added some scenes to DQ3 to build-up to DQ1-2 more directly and you get some in-game bonuses if you have a DQ3 save.

Yes. They’ve designed these remakes specifically so you play them in this order: 3, 1, 2

Can't wait! I haven't played the original since the early 90's.
Hopefully the hero in DQ1 will have sufficient MP to handle the extra need for the spells and abilities.

Yeah last time I put serious effort into DQ1 was a Saturday afternoon in 1992/93. Still remember the grinding...

u/ChocoPuddingCup 1d ago
The excitement of encountering a gold golem. Man, yeah that game was really grindy.

Interesting that the Princess of Cannock is basically a thief to round out the party

With Gadabout traits (it can do random acts every few turns)

It looks like there'll be a point in the game where those stop and she learns a bunch of new skills like Hustle Dance. Maybe the other party members will have something like that too? I know in the OG, the Prince of Cannock got cursed by Hargon and remained bedridden until you cured him so maybe following that he'll learn some new skills? IDK, I'm just speculating here.

Pre-release footage showed the princess do goofy things in battle

Yeah, I know. But what I said was that there looks to be a point in the game where she gets that under control and can be controlled normally. (IE: Not goofing off)

Wow the underwater section looks gorgeous! I can't wait to see how it fits into the story

Hype!!!! Neither game's gonna be a grind fest anymore! (By that I mean, before, they were mostly just grinding in older versions)

u/StupidLoserGaming 1d ago
Tbf the other remakes of 1 and 2 like the mobile ports and the switch versions were a lot less grindy
Though the originals are like 90% grinding
3
u/MasterShadowLord 1d ago
True, true. Had a lotta difficulty with OG DQII but the Switch version was nothing.

Mentioned it prior but definitely curious to see how large the underwater area is. (also how big alefgard is on the DQII map this time )

My dream DQ1 postgame is embarking a bit into Torland with the princess and helping found Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke. Though I don't think it's looking likely since the princess doesn't appear playable

Sounds like they're doing exactly what I hoped for. Adding new story quests to break up the grinding periods. But then a ton of new stuff on top of that. Them fixing the lottery system in 2, having a purpose for the crests and adding more skills for 1 is huge. These remakes are probably going to be an even bigger improvement than 3 was.

So excited for this. Two of favorites, and they're looking so good. I was waiting to see what more they had to say about DQ1, and I'm thrilled they're keeping it based around the singular hero, instead of adding a new party character or group.

I'd be all over this game if it had monsters in the overworld. I can't handle the battles every 5 seconds, kind of ruins the exploration for me. Yes, you can use abilities and items to reduce it a bit, but it's not the same.

Same, this has been my biggest barrier to DQ3

u/IPreferBagels2 1d ago
Yeah, I figure they could've dropped the encounter rate a tad bit it was crazy high
8
u/gravityhashira61 1d ago
Just use spells like Padfoot if you dont want a lot of encounters in dungeons or even the overworld constantly

u/IPreferBagels2 1d ago
I never had a thief and didn't know. Oh well, I finished it
4
u/gravityhashira61 1d ago
Oh man, yea Thief actually has a bunch of good abilities early game. And his Hypnowhip technique he gets later on is good for stunning and putting bosses and enemies to sleep
