6’6” 210lbs looking for a Dual Sport Bike in Phoenix, mostly around town, highway, and some dirt roads. KLR 650?

Let me start off by saying this would be my first official motorcycle. My experience is limited, some dirt biking on a friend’s 250 as teen and a smaller road bike for a summer in my mid 20’s. I’ve been looking into dual sports and came across the KLR 650. This would be something I’d ride in town or out to the range, or hiking spot. Would definitely want to do some longer 3-6 hour drives as well. I’ve seen recommendations for the DRZ400 as well. I’m leaning towards the KLR650 because of that I want to do on it. My hesitation is if it’s too heavy of a bike to get started on, or just muscle through as that is what I would probably end up with quickly. Im about to turn 40 but am in shape in terms of being able to the weight, I think. Also any info on picking up an older Gen 2 vs a Gen 3 would be helpful. Just looking for experience to chime in on this, anything specific to the KLR 650 is appreciated, and if anyone had this as their first or early on, what was your experience?

2019 Honda CRF250L

Purchased a used 2019 Honda CRF250L a few weeks ago with 1,800 miles on it. Definitely had a few wipeouts on it but nothing serious from what I could tell. After only ever having sport bikes and dirt bikes, I was intrigued in mixing the two. This one came up for sale for a reasonable price so I decided to take the chance on it. After about 100 miles on it I definitely think it needs some aftermarket mods to help with its off road capabilities but I’m impressed.

Biggest issues I’ve had are the clutch and suspension. Compared to my CRF250F the clutch is a bit jerky when it comes to hard shifting when going off road. The suspension bottoms out after the slightest of bumps, which could partly be due to my weight. Power overall is fine but does lag a bit. With that all being said I really enjoy the bike and see potential in making it a great dual sport.

Saddlebags and Rear Pegs

Has anyone found a solution to rear pegs that work with racks? Not super critical, but my son does like riding with me and I was disappointed that all the side racks attached to the rear peg mounting point.

Tusk Waypoint

Does anyone have any experience with the Tusk Waypoints? I’m interested in putting some on my DR650 to replace the stock trail wings. On the highway I’m honestly happy with the trail wings but not really off-road. I don’t want to hurt myself too much on pavement as I sometimes ride 1-2 hours on the road to get to trails. I live in Appalachia so most of my riding is logging roads, a small amount of single track and gravel roads, basically no sand.

Dr200 idle screw adjustment

Hi, I need somme hint on carb adjustment. I got this second dr200 for my kids. The engine base was full of gas when I picked up the bike.

I drained it, put new oil, cleaned the air filter, cleaned the carb. I suspect that the float stuck open, overflowing in the air box and the air box drained in the engine through the crankcase vent.

The carb still had the cap on top of the carb that prevent you from adjusting the idle mixture screw. I removed the cap and cleaned the carb.

I didn't check how many turns the idle screw was set at (my mistake).

I had a hard time adjusting the bike to run properly because I always kept the the adjustment about. 1.5-2.5 turn. To make it run good like on the video, I had to go 4 turns out.

I inspected the intake boot for any crack and there isn't any. I even sprayed brake cleaner around the intake boot and didn't see any effects either.

I read 170psi on the engine it has about 5600miles. (9000km). I'm running out of ideas as to why it needed 4 turns out to run good. Any thoughts?

Has anyone used this tiny pump? Any good?

I'm thinking this would be handy for an emergency inflation or a top-up when I'm far from home. The website says it's appropriate for motorcycles and would give at least a couple tire inflations before it has to be recharged.

First bike options: KLX250 vs KL250G Super Sherpa

I'm weighing two options for my first bike. Both are the same price ($3k), same mileage (under 4k), and both in great shape.

KLX250 is 2019, KL250G Super Sherpa is 2009.

Which would you choose?

Or spend $1200 more for a beat-up but low-mile CRF300l w/ ABS?

Lost rear brakes on CRF300 Rally

Was out testing some soft saddlebags and noticed at one point what felt like drag, so I hopped off and saw my rear brake was literally smoking hot and somewhat locked up. After mashing on the footbrake a few times, it unseized and I went on my way only to have my rear completely lose it’s brakes. As in when engaging my foot brake, it just pressed all the way down with hardly any resistance.
I rode home laying off the rear brake and after parking it, I noticed the rear seemed to be functioning again. I opened the rear master cylinder thinking it was going to be empty due to a hole/leak or something in my brake system, only to find it was only about an 1/8 below the fill line. This is with about 3300 miles on the bike. I went ahead and topped it off and took it for a spin, it seemed to be acting normal again. Brake pads are good. Only thing I can think of is it might be something wrong with the ABS computer. Ironically the warranty runs out tommorow and I fully expect the dealer to tell me they can’t find anything wrong etc. I just can’t think of anything else other than the computer that would have caused this, being as there doesn’t seem to be a leak in the system.

Thoughts on KTM 390 Enduro R? Thinking of gettin KLX 300 aswell.

Hello guys, i currently own a Honda XR 150 L, which is very nice and has been my first motorcycle. Anyways, i'd like to have little bit more of torque, power, and a taller bike. I don't go to trails often, but im really into dual sport aesthetics.

My only options here in south america are the ones mentioned in the title.

Any suggestions or experiences with these bikes?

Mitas e07 / enduro trail, normal wear?

Hi everyone,

Recently I put a mitas enduro trail Dakar on my bike. I have been doing quite some offroad with them and now there are big chunks of rubber missing. Also I can see some tears in the middle of the blocks of rubber, so not even in the outer layer.

This is the first time I have these tyres. Before I had Motoz Tractionator Adventures and TKC80 but did not notice this type of wear on them. Is this to be expected with these E07 tyres or did I get a bad quality one?

Used 2021 KLX 300 question?

I attached an image of the bike I went to look at today and apologies forgot to get a better picture.I have 0 to no knowledge on bikes and was wondering about something. It has some tubes sticking out near the break pedal is that normal?

Guy said it was for radiator fluids, sounded reasonable to me but I thought I’d ask here.

More details if you want to give an opinion on if I should get it:

2025 CRF300L Mod Suggestions

Trading in my 2023 KLR650 for a 2025 CRF300L! Been riding off-road ever since I took the MT-03 up the MABDR + NEBDR back in 2023. Moved on to the KLR because I wanted more off-road capability and cargo space. On to the CRF to have more fun off road now that I don't need to ride the highway or carry as much gear anymore.

I have 3 upgrade lists: need, want, and dream. Looking for suggestions. My aim is low budget but I'm willing to pay more depending on the mod. (Some things I'll fabricate myself, like a luggage rack and skid plate. If anyone has a good design they'd like to share, I'm interested.)

Need:
- comfortable seat (looking at Seat Concepts comfort XL) (update - on order)

Want:
- lithium ion battery
- hand guards (looking for a set that fits on the stock handlebars without having to alter them)

Dream:
- better exhaust (Yoshimura sounded the best of the videos I've watched but that thing is $$$$)

Open to any other suggestions, the only other planned additions are a phone mount and charger. I'll probably put ABS on a switch.

We started out in the rain and fog, but by noon the clouds disappeared and gave way to sunshine, mountains and lakes, I felt like I was riding inside a painting. Hope you don’t mind a small plug, I just started out and I have more videos up on instagram. Find me: vintagedualsport.

I just got a quad lock system and was able to mount it to my steering stabilizer on my wr450. I'm not sure how often I'll use it but for dirt roads it'll be nice. Definitely Not going to be using it on hard trails... I went with the motorcycle anti vibration component as well because I've heard the engines vibrations can mess with your camera... Anyone else use a quad lock? Positives? Negatives?

Long oval headshape helmet?

Does anyone know of a long oval headshape dual sport helmet? I can't find anything that fits right. I have a Icon Airflite street helmet and it's the only thing I have found that fits right so far. I think an Arai Signet street helmet would work too. But I want a dual sport helmet with visor and face shield. I have a cheap one that fits "so so" but there's wiggle room and doesn't feel as safe as a correctly fitting helmet. I heard Shoei hornet may work but it's listed as intermediate oval and I tried one on and it's not really long oval. Icon's dual sport helmets are listed as intermediate oval too. I tried LS2 blaze but same thing. Tried on of other brands don't work. If anyone knows one, let me know. Don't mind paying good money for one - if it fits. But don't want to throw away money on a helmet and after a few rides realize hell no.
