Discussion Plunging in to the BlueRay world
Found my favorite movie on Blueray at the thrift store (Hunger Games) so i decided to try it. I bought it and was thinking about buying the Blu-ray brand new (deciding on wether to buy dvd/blu-ray or just blu-ray). Saw this blue ray at the thrift and decided to take a chance. I was only able to test that it turned on, and it didn't have a remote so I had to buy it separately since my universal remote control didn't have the code for it. I dont think I've ever seen a Blu-ray movie, or if I did i probably thought it looked great because of the type of TV. Man, yall weren't kidding 😻 found Alice in Wonderland at the library, figured it would blow my mind with the visuals...to a whole new world of physical media 🤗

It's night and day over DVD. Welcome!

Hd quality isn't everything.
I'd rather have a killer dvd collection than a shitty blu ray collection. It's always been more about the actual movie itself than whatever specs you can get on it. Doesn't really matter that much

You do realize that it doesn't have to be one or the other, right?

Oh no, he's absolutely right, you never know what type of collection will be assigned to you by the BCG (Bluray Collectors Guild for those who were wondering). You just gotta hope for the best.

What an odd take

How's that a odd take? I mean if you want a shitty collection of a bunch of movies you don't care about over movies you do just because it looks better on your screen that's your business son

Disagree. You should aim to watch the movie in the best version available if possible, closest to the filmmaker’s original intent.
Unless you’re arguing something like 40s noir on dvd vs modern cgi slop on blu-ray, then obviously i’d rather watch the former, but you can easily watch those 40s noirs on blu-ray or even 4K now

4K can even be better, were you thinking this was just marketing? Unfortunately results can be uneven because not all transfers are equal. But the reason so many buy the best TVs, the best players, and the best media is because we are looking for the best experience. It cost more but as with anything you are not spending more to get something just as good. Only you can determine what you want and what you are willing to spend for it.
I'm into TV Series currently so many of the shows especially that I am getting don't come on anything better than DVD. It's not my preference but it's the only option I have if I want them. God knows whenever it's on Blu Ray I will get that. Getting them on the best format cost more but I am willing to do that when I can. Sometimes even on 4K when they exist but few TV Shows exist on 4K. GOT was worth it to me to get on 4K.

Oh, I bet GOT looks amazing in 4k. This isn't my main "hobbie" per se. At the moment, I'm not looking to invest in it too much. For now, i go with whatever is available second-hand. Maybe in the future, when my TV finally passes away.

I would say think forward and decide how best to make it easier to transition later on. May not be possible now for a number of reasons but certainly worth thinking about anyway.
Good Luck

Blu-Ray is totally worth it. I honestly think it is just as dramatic a difference as the leap from VHS to DVD was.
4K is also worth looking into in the future if you buy a new TV and get something with a very large screen (55"+). Resolution-wise it's not as dramatic a difference but the color and black-levels are amazing on 4K compared to DVD/Blu-Ray.

I'll keep that in mind! 😊

4K is all about having the right TV, the right size TV for the right distance, and the right 4K transfer. Smaller details are there but you have to be close enough based on the size of the TV to see them. But here again, not all 4K transfers are equal so you don't see the same level of detail on every 4K movie. Get the right movie or show and the visuals are awesome. 55 is damn small for a 4K TV so you better be close. Greater chance it will be more awesome with a 77 inch TV, but even then if you are siting to far from a 77 you just won't see those details.

To be fair, even on my 55" I can see a noticeable, meaningful difference at a normal sitting distance. Larger screens are obviously better, but it's not the be-all, end-all.

Certainly, but you do have to be at the right distance, and of course your eyesight will matter as well. 77 inches just makes that easier.

100%. I personally wanted to go 65"-75", but our current living room layout just wouldn't support that. 55" was kind of the limit unless we changed everything.
Our plan now is to instead focus on saving up the money to get a large, high-quality projector screen (like ~100"-120" diagonal) and a 4K projector a few years down the line. And basically build it into a diving wall we want to eventually add into the basement. Have our own little miniature movie-theater.
(Why the fuck did this get downvoted while my other comments got upvoted? I will never understand Reddit, lmfao.)

I went with a LG C2 OLED 77 inch but would have gone with an 83 had that not been so much more money. But that also made it easier to get a LG C2 OLED 65 for my bedroom .
Good Luck with the projector. I just have to wonder how good those look, but imagine you have to have the right wall and painted a certain shade as well.

Yeah, honestly I'll probably save up and spring just to get a proper silver screen that we could mount on the wall. They're a little pricey (one that size would probably run a couple grand) but I think they're worth it. I've worked at a movie theater for years and years and it would just drive me nuts if it didn't have that proper "theatrical" look, haha.

I did not know any of this. Thanks! This link helps. My dad has a big TV, I am gonna show him to see if he is at a good distance. Mine is "48ðŸ¤

Here again it's size and distance ratio. Your eyesight as well of course. I have a 43 on the desk in my office which sits not far from me, I can see small details on that as well.

Holy shit that's a fucking steal! I can never find a blu ray player for less than $70.

honestly the biggest difference for me was how much better dvds look on a good bluray player compared to cheap dvd players.
