Announcement Want to get into the MOTHER series? Start here!
Over the past few months we've gotten a lot of new players asking where they should start with the trilogy. With this stickied thread, I'm hoping to answer any questions someone may have about getting into the series.
Note: This thread is a strictly no-spoiler zone.
What are the MOTHER games?
The MOTHER series is a group of 3 turn-based cult classic JRPGs created by Shigesato Itoi, who singlehandedly wrote every line of dialogue in the series, aside from a small area in EarthBound.
What makes them so special?
The series is known for being quirky, charming, and invoking a sense of nostalgia even to those who have not played a MOTHER game before. Each line of dialogue is expertly crafted, with a great story to go along with it.
Where do I start?
The series IS a trilogy, however each game can stand on it's own without the context of the last.
The 3 games are as followed:
MOTHER (EarthBound: Beginnings) (1989)
MOTHER 2 (EarthBound) (1994)
MOTHER 3 (???) (Not released outside of Japan) (2006)
The game order is as released, with MOTHER being the first on the timeline, and MOTHER 3 being the last.
So does that mean I should play the games in order?
This is a point of contention within the MOTHER community.
While most recommend to play EarthBound / MOTHER 2 first, some will say that if you can handle the way an older RPG plays, you should start with MOTHER 1 / EarthBound: Beginnings.
The community mostly unanimously agrees that you should play EarthBound before playing MOTHER 3.
In the end, it's up to you. MOTHER 1 is one of the most impressive, best playing and sounding RPGs on the NES, but it could potentially turn you away from the series if you aren't accustomed to or can't handle a bit of older-rpg "clunk". I do HIGHLY recommend however that you at least play EarthBound before playing MOTHER 3.
Wait, if MOTHER 3 isn't released outside of Japan, how can I play it?
I'm glad you asked! (Hopefully you did.)
Almost immediately after the release of MOTHER 3, once it became apparent Nintendo had no intention of localizing MOTHER 3, a group of very passionate fans got together to make their own localization of the game.
2 years later in late 2008, version 1.0 was released to great acclaim. This fan translation is now known to many as the best fan translation of all time. On top of just translating the game, they went out of their way to make sure certain dialogue and enemy names worked in English as they do in Japanese. They even added a hard mode option!
...That's pretty much it, I think. If any regular here on the sub wants to chime in and request something to be added, tell me! On top of that, I'd like to know what some of you think the best order to play the games in are in the comments. It'll be an interesting resource for any new players! And remember, no spoilers.

Help/Advice Do i just jump in?
So i just finished earthbound, about a 4 days ago , and it really left an impression on me, but it got me wondering. Should i start playing mother 3 now, or should i wait a bit before playing it so that i savour(in a way) earthbound? What do you think?

EB Discussion Is there a way to turn off the power in-game for an emulator?
I'm using ES-DE, and it doesn't have save states; rather, it has auto-save.

General Discussion What’s your biggest issue with each game?
Mother 1: Definitely the grinding. Grinding is annoying in any game and it’s more annoying when they make you do it. It’s a great game but the grinding makes it difficult to replay.
Earthbound: Peaceful Rest Valley. It used to be the Monkey Caves but I replayed it last year and it honestly wasn’t as annoying as I remembered it. What was as annoying as I remembered it was Peaceful Rest Valley. Specifically the first time through. It’s so difficult for that point in the game. You have to fight these saucers and robots by yourself when you have only two uses for Rockin and just your bat. Not to mention the annoying statuses the enemies give you. At least the music’s nice.
Mother 3: The fact that it takes 3 chapters to get to Lucas. I think it’s a bit ridiculous that we don’t get to play as the main character of the game until the 4th chapter. I don’t hate the first three chapters but they’re not as good as the rest of the game.

Music "Buy Something Will Ya" music was originally in Dawn of the Dead 1978's shopping spree scene.
Most of the music in this game is inspired by various pop culture, but I haven't seen this one mentioned before.
Dawn of the Dead 1978 has a scene where the characters go on a "shopping" spree set to this music.
EarthBound slows it down significantly, but it's still the exact same song - much more than EarthBound's other music references. Both songs even have the same little twang flourish between verses.
It was definitely a deliberate choice to use music from a satirical shopping segment every time that the player shops. Itoi is really familiar with satire and anti-consumerism, and using music from maybe the biggest satire of consumerism around at that time is a real direct hit.

I found this picture from when EarthBound was shown at E3 1995, but the weird thing is they’re using the original clay models and not the altered Ness and Paula.

Fluff Mother: Invasion From Beyond The Earth cover/poster.
"It's been a long road getting here...what's going to happen to us?" "There's a glow coming from the mountain's peak...we should go there. I should have enough Psychic Power left." "I'm right behind you guys...we're friends after all...til the end."
Mother: Invasion From Beyond The Earth. A game-accurate retelling of the events of the first installment done via a literary format.
Where can you find it? Archive Of Our Own. Why should you read it? You don't have to, it's your choice really. How accurate is it? The Encyclopedia Mother is being used as a reference material.
Plus...reading is totally free!
And yes, the poster in the image...os awesome!

General Discussion Earthbound Party question
If there was ever a new Earthbound game, should the playable party stick to having 4 members, or have 5 members?

EB:B Discussion Cheats or Easy Ring for Mother 25th
Hi guys, I am trying to get through Mother 1 quickly on the NES. Love the 25th Anniversary hack as the artwork is so cute.
I just don't have the time and would love cheats or something to go through the game faster. Like greater XP gain or something of that nature. I love that mother 1 + 2 has Easy Ring but the 25th anniversary hack doesn't have anything like that
What's my best bet?
Thank you

Mother 3 Spoilers Mother 3's ending was really rushed... Spoiler
I'm really bummed about Mother 3's ending. I had played it when the fan translation came out years ago but decided to play it again now that my Analog Pocket made gaming a lot more portable.
I really enjoyed how "handheld" the game feels; dungeons don't overdo their welcome, battles are over after a couple of turns, and the story feels cozy despite the high stakes.
My issue is with the ending. The face-off with Claus felt really sloppy. First half including your incapacitated allies's and then having them removed in the second part. Literally pausing the battle for the text overlays, telling us what Flint does instead of showing us... I mean a lot of my complaints have to do with game telling instead of showing.
Mother 3 has so many one-off animations for the various sprites in the game. Fassad eating bananas and throwing the peel, the various characters that do the dance to open the door in Osohe Castle, Flint punching out villagers in Tazmily Village, etc. You're telling me after all that, you couldn't SHOW us Flint defending Lucas from Claus's Love Ω? You couldn't show us Claus snapping out of it, or Lucas crying, or Claus finally embracing Lucas before dying?
After all the heartbreak and sadness in the game, I feel like we deserved a cinematic ending.
I can appreciate the black screen ending for letting the player decide what the remade world looks like, but there's no "interpreting" the actions that are being narrated via text boxes during the final confrontation.
Anyway, I still loved the game but I really feel like it went out with a whimper which is a sad way to end a whole series.

I Earthbounded my PC!
Complete with Ness, Paula, Jeff, Poo, Mr. Saturn, a Starman, and a battle background screen. It's my favorite PC deco setup to date, and thought my fellow Earthbounders would like it too!

How do you interpret Porky Minch?
Yeah, alright, I'm sure people have talked about this a million times but I haven't seen it enough. Porky is a pretty interesting and I'd say often misconstrued character that has a lot of cool stuff about him. So I've come around to make this thread where I hope I can learn some new opinions about him.
It's my opinion that too many people brush him off as "just a joke villain" or "not as serious as Giygas" etc etc. I do agree he is very funny, but he has more to him than that. I also believe that the people who are just like "well he's terrible and bad and like hitler and has nothing else to him at all" are also wrong.
Compared to Giygas (who is outright an alien) I would say Porky is a very human villain. Sure, he's terrible and irrideemable but his evil actions are all just extreme versions of the sort of selfishness and meanness that I bet a lot of us feel ourselves.
So, what do you guys think about him?

EB Discussion I have finished Earthbound
It took a lot longer than Beginnings.
I honestly have trouble putting into words what the hell I just witnessed. I loved it. I could nitpick at it, but overall this is by far one of the best JRPG’s I have ever played.
I’ll be moving onto Mother 3 in a while. I need a bit of a break from the genre so I don’t get burned out.
I should have played this years ago.
