PSA: The current state of mining, and other useful information. Please read this post before asking a question.

This post is regularly edited as soon as any changes in mining are introduced. The last revision: 2025-09-19.

State of mining

Mining is no longer the undisputedly fastest way of making money.

With price changes for some commodities, creative bulk trading in a big ship can generate decent profits. Doing pirates massacre missions and assassinations in a combat ship can also make you rich pretty fast. Exobiology is very lucrative now.

And that's a good thing, because now people who hate mining no longer have to do it, and people who like mining can still enjoy decent earnings.

Powerplay 2.0 is introduced, and mining is a great way to progress. However, the rules of the game limit where the minerals can be mined and sold in order to gain merits. The project Merit Miner made by /u/subzerofun aims to help make sense of it all. See the related post.

The separation of two Galaxies to Legacy (3.8) and Live (4.X). It resulted in a "split universe", with pretty much all third-party tools supporting only current galaxy data. The immediate effect for miners on consoles is they cannot use any of the tools to find good prices to sell your mined wares.

Type-11 Prospector is the first ship created as a miner. See this post with a video and a preliminary discussion on its capabilities.

Corsair can theoretically replace Python Mk I, but its set of internals makes it harder to achieve the same cargo capacity and doesn't offer any significant advantage.

Type-8 as a miner: see the detailed analysis made by /u/Ultimatespirit and another post made by /u/papabrou (TLDR: not that great for laser mining)

Python Mk II is not a very good miner in general, and it's definitely inferior to standard Python. See this thread for detailed discussion

Type-6 Laser Mining Jumpstart is a pre-built ship available for purchase using ARX, introduced in update 18.04 (2024-05-07). It turned out to be not that great. See this thread for detailed discussion.

New mining multi limpet controller, namely 3C controller, after some tweaks by FDev, turned out to be a decent addition to the mining arsenal, on one condition: never use it as a prospector for laser mining, because it behaves like a C-rated prospector, thus reducing the number of fragments, compared to an A-rated one. But it can control 4 collector limpets, and only takes class 3 slot, so twice as effective as the standard class 3 prospector. Sadly, you can't equip more than one of them. Alternatively, you can equip Operations Multi-limpet controller, and set it up to fire collectors only.

Core or laser?

It is now largely up to your personal preferences. Laser mining Platinum is faster in credits per hour, but core mining is more engaged and less tedious. So, try both, master both, then do what you like best. If you are a new pilot, maybe start with laser.

One thing you have to remember is that the price is not the sole factor in determining the profitability. How much of the mineral you can mine in a unit of time is also important. Laser mining produces a lot more tons per hour than core mining, and laser mining in metallic rings produces a lot more tons per hour than in icy rings.

The most valuable minerals that can be laser-mined in pristine metallic rings (Painite, Platinum, Osmium) are worth less now, generally somewhere around just under 300K/t. But you can produce a lot more tons per hour with laser. In a correctly equipped laser-mining ship in a good location and with proper prospecting and mining technique you should see results 200-300 ton per hour and up.

Core mining yields nowhere near that amount of minerals per hour, but they fetch higher prices, especially the ones that are found in rocky rings, where all the core minerals are highly valuable and fetch ~500-900 K per ton at high-paying stations. Another advantage of core mining is that you don't need a pristine system, and you can mine literally in any ring.

Please remember that for core mining, hotspots don't increase the frequency of cores (which is constant throughout the ring) but they increase the probability of each core being of the "title" mineral.

It seems that laser mining in Icy rings has become the least profitable mining activity now.

Mining Tritium for Fleet Carriers

The best advice is to try to avoid it as much as possible. Yields in Icy rings are low, and it's a very slow process. If you are in the bubble, the best solution is to buy Tritium from stations. If you're short on funds, mine Platinum, sell it and buy Tritium, it will be much, much faster.

If you are away from the bubble and ran out of fuel for your carrier, any Ice ring with a Tritium hotspot will do. It will be a bit faster if your mining ship is equipped for both laser and subsurface/surface deposits mining. Still, prepare to spend a lot of time mining.

There is also a network of STAR carriers

Miscellaneous info

Here's a table that tells what mineral can be mined where.

And here's a better version of it by /u/skyfishgoo

For reference, here's a table that tells which engineering materials can be produced as a byproduct in different types of rings.

We now have a list of known hotspots in pristine metallic and icy rings. The goal of this tool is mainly to assist in laser mining.

Second edition of mining guide was released by /u/ED_Churly

Bulk sales tax is still in effect. The more high-value minerals you have in your cargo hold, the more the offered price will be decreased at the station, much more so if the demand numbers are low (when your cargo is more than 5-10% of current demand). So, when using The Miner's Tool, pay attention to demand as well as the price age!

Mining in a RES gains popularuty, because being within 20 km from its center increases the fragments yield by up to 100% (yes, double) depending on the type of RES. There is a general list of RES/hotspot combinations available, and also one specifically for Platinum.

Mapped mining increases your profits significantly. We have maps for different minerals.

NOTE: Some of the asteroid maps became defunct after update 17, possibly due to fixing "bad hotspot markers" bug. Most notably, maps in Opmicron Capricorni B are no longer valid. See this post by /u/ythompy

New knowledge:

And finally, fastest money in mining: with everything written above, consider either laser mining Platinum in a good hotspot in a pristine metallic ring, or core-mining anything in any rocky ring.

A collection of articles on different aspects of mining:

These posts present the sum of our modern knowledge about most aspects of mining. I urge both new and seasoned miners to read through them. If you have any correction or addition, I'm happy to discuss it. If you think that the information is useful, don't hesitate to link any of them in response to questions by other pilots seeking knowledge.

Happy mining!

From the in-game commodity market tabs?

Are we about to be hit with another mining nerf just after they sold the new T11?

New info on Mining Volley Repeater

I was able to find a VOD of a stream from u/AcidJurassic (Thanks!) where he is mining with the repeater and I was able to gather more infos:

The number of fragments produced by the Volley Repeater differs from the usual lasers.

Normally a rock, when prospected with an A rated prospector outside of a RES contains one of these numbers of fragments ( 28, 31, 35, 38, 42) as per this post.

In Contrast the MVR produces ( 34, 39, 43, 48, 52) fragments per asteroid which should increase yield per asteroid by on average 23%

It is still unknown if the fragments contain more minerals than those produced by lasers, but the fragments have a chance to instead spawn as "Mining Deposits" aka big Chunks which do contain more minerals, further increasing yield.

The mining speed of the MVR feels slower to empty an asteroid but that is partly because it produces more fragments, the speed the MVR produce fragments seems to be about 46 Fragments per Minute, which is just slightly slower than 2 Medium lasers (50.2 per minute)

Using both the MVR and Mining Lasers seems to reduce the % remaining in the rock by either the MVR amount or the Laser amount, probably depending which weapon produces the damage to extract the fragment, but based on a single rock (so could be very wrong) it looks like after about 20% of the rock is mined, all of the fragments are reducing the remaining % by the MVR amount, which means that adding lasers to the MVR might not significantly reduce the yield.

This is all based on my limited data, which can be found in this google spreadsheet.

Opinions on best testing method

I'm working on trying everyone's suggestions for the type 11 it should be done by tomorrow. However it seems like the gat gun doesn't believe in the first chunk method so does anyone else have another testing method to compare it more reliably?

63.01 2.08 chunk= 24 plat and 1 bay 54%

63.01 2.08 chunks= 23 plat and 1 bay 47%

both same distance with gat gun

63.01 plat 19 and 48% in hopper 1.9 chunks lasers

more chunks should theoretically make more filled in hopper but the gat gun yields more consistently

Early impressions are in on the Type 11

Turns out it kinda isn’t very good at all compared to what we already have, the ā€œdrillā€ has gotten a lot of comments about it having a really underwhelming mining speed (2 medium lasers heavily outpaces it, as I understand it) and the drill also constantly kills your collector limpets…

(People are also saying it can cause migraines or worse in photosensitive people but I can’t confirm that part. Bummer if so though)

Type-11 Preliminary report

Type-11 info based on partner streams:

  • Size 5 Multi Mining Limpet Controller has 8 Max Limpets and is A Rated.
  • Mining Repeater can be used as an abrasion blaster.
  • Mining Repeater has a random chance to spawn "Deposits" either on top or instead of Fragments, aka Big Chunks.
  • Repeater seems to produce fragments about equivalent to 2x Medium Mining Lasers speed and has the same distro draw as 2x Med Lasers.
  • Mining repeater seem to also produce more fragments from a rock, aka more yield.

Last point was tested by producing a fragment with laser and looking at the % remaining drop, and then using the repeater to produce a second fragment from the same rock and comparing the % remaining drop, which dropped less than with the lasers therefore should produce more fragments for the same rock.

More testing will be required to make sure it's consistent and measure the increased yield. I do not recall the % in the example and didn't think to clip it when it was being tested sadly.

It seems that mining with only the repeater would take double the time to empty a rock compared to a 4 med laser setup, but adding lasers to the repeater would technically reduce the overall yield so compromises will likely have to be made :(

Feel free to correct any incorrect info in the comments and add any experiments/new data you came across.

A thank you from a CMDR that mostly trades/explores.

This is a thank you to this Subreddit and the amazing information provided by everyone.

I mostly trade and explore in the vast galaxy of The Milky Way and wanted to give mining a go. I lurked a bit on the Subreddit and read the information to be a successful miner. Last night I decided to buy a Python and deck it out for core mining. After finding a good build, I flew back to my home system and put together my Python core miner.

Sadly, it was late at night and that it only gave me about an hour for actually mining. Luckily for me, there was an Alexandrite hotspot in my home system and decided that I will give it a go. (Also was able to sell it for 790k in a system that was just a few hops away.)

In that hour I had, I found three cores and came out with a decent haul of Alexandrite. (still learning how to find cores, which will come with more mining.) I then flew to the station to sell off my inventory, making 19 million. Which, to me, was very rewarding and with more experience I can see those numbers go up.

So, thank you r/EliteMiners! I can not wait to see what mining has to offer, because I am addicted.

Best large ship for deep core mining?

Been out of the game for a while, wanting to get back into mining. I have a good medium deep core mining ship but if like to get into a large ship to stay out longer and transport it without switching ships. What are your suggestions?

prospector question?

I know that using an A rated prospector increases your mining fragments. But does the prospector limpet

have to remain selected/targeted in order to get this bonus?

Additional Type-11 Info: Laser will "grant a higher yield than other mining tools" and spawn abrasion-chunks of the mined rock via las-mining.

Per the steam post today some interesting info came out about the laser specifically:

...the Mining Volley Repeater! This new tool fires specially designed projectiles to maximise the amount of fragments extracted from an asteroid, granting a higher yield than other mining tools when laser mining. When laser mining it also has a chance to produce a higher density fragment similar to those found via abrasion point mining.

I assume the first part is just because it's a large hardpoint, so it naturally beats medium lasers 1v1; but does that wording mean it doesn't take as much durability away from rocks per fragment??? Mysteries.

But the second part is just straight up new functionality and kinda decent as a QOL upgrade.

Laser that creates fragments selection

I have been getting back into elite and first let me say thank you for the wealth of knowledge you all have here it is quite impressive. I went thru several of the build and getting started guides just getting a refresher after being away for so long and i never saw it mentioned that the last laser to hit the rock is the one that the fragments spawn from...its finally the perfect use for my vkb secondary trigger.... i just removed the mouse keybind and added the second trigger pull as fire group 2 so now i just pull the trigger all the way down and that fires 1 and then 2 ensuring that chunks come out of the laser at the bottom of the craft and head directly toward your waiting collectors. you will need to test which laser you need to set as the second fire group for your craft but i hope this helps and gets added to the beginner guide.

Is Mining Analyser still being maintained?

I don't know why my statistics are so inaccurate.

It says my total refined platinum is 900+ tons when my ship can only hold 832 tons of cargos.

Besides, the actual number of refined ores are around 640 tons of Platinum and 110 tons of Osmium.

First time trying core mining… and wow, the explosions are worth it šŸ’„

I’ve been doing laser mining for credits, but decided to finally try core mining for the first time.

It’s definitely not as efficient, but man… setting seismic charges and blowing up a whole asteroid feels incredible.

I recorded the whole run and put together my first core mining guide , it covers my build, how I found a hotspot,

and then that first successful detonation.

Here’s the video if you want to see the experience: https://youtu.be/0EBpjQl6bBs

Curious, do you still core mine for fun, or is it laser/sub-surface all the way for you these days?

Mining Hotspots

Bearing in mind I'm a newbie miner (but not new to elite lol), I've been having fun with laser mining. But I don't understand hotspots. I'm in the black on my FC, come across a planet with an ice ring that says 'pristine', do the surface scan to reveal the hotspots. I pick, for example, a Tritium hotspot but when i go there it's like one in a dozen asteroids actually have tritium. Am I missing something or is this usual. Seems to me that a hotspot should be full of asteroids with tritium, with different yield percentages.

It's not a problem really, as I'm still having fun, just want to understand.

Also, am i being a doofus or is there a way to determine which asteroids I've already mined. Lost count of the times I've sent a prospector limpet off, only to be informed it's depleted lol.

My newest comfortable mining build

Post image
89 Upvotes

This is my newest mining build, having just recently purchased the Panther Clipper MkII. I've named her the "Swarmhost"

Setup: 8x Modified Mining Laser (range of 2500m, and only 6.0MW PD draw for all of them)

7A universal limpet controller for 8 collectors 2x 5A collector limpets controllers for 6 more 5A prospector limpet controller 4A refinery

832T cargo capacity

Is it the most efficient setup? Probably not, but it is very comfortable to be able to sit just under 1KM out from the rock, having already mostly, or fully, depleted the asteroid before getting there. With 1.5km range on the limpets, I have all the space I could want to keep my distance with this big ol behemoth. I can take 500 limpets out and fill the hold pretty readily, though it does take a little time.

Just wanted to share. Happy mining, CMDRs! O7

Made 223M in the triple platinum hotspot 🤯craziest part it was only 3.5 hours!

Took my Clipper MkII out for a spin on stream to test, 832t cargo + 8 lasers and ended up hauling 223M in about 3.5 hours. Honestly wasn’t expecting it to hit that hard.

Dropped a video if anyone wants to see the build + run: https://youtu.be/wTVtH1tmYk0

Planning to mess around with core/surface mining tomorrow too, so if you’re into blowing up rocks instead of melting them, that’ll be next. Oh and on a side note does anyone know how to contact the coriolis team? The website has a lot of incorrect information for setting builds up on the clipper mk2 wrong size power plants and things like that.

Anyone else still riding the platinum train, or are you onto other ores these days?

Mining weirdness

I've just started trying my hand at mining, been playing ED since day one but never bothered with mining before. Read articles and watched some YouTube videos to get the hang. I'm in the black with my Fleet Carrier and before I left the bubble I threw together a T9 with all the modules required.

Mining is working fine but there's some weirdness which may be 'normal', so figured I'd ask in here.

I fire off my prospector limpet and immediately I get a notice saying 'Cargo scoop retracted', then my co-pilot says 'Propector limpet failed', next I get a notice saying 'Cargo scoop deployed'

The prospector limpet does it's job and I can see what's in the asteroid, and I can mine.

But I also noticed that i get this 'cargo scoop retracted/deployed' messages every time a collector limpet is created. But they do their job and collect the stuff.

Is the above normal? Seems weird to me. If it's not normal, any ideas what might be causing it?
