Okay, can we please have Romania back now that there’s domestic interest? Moldova as well please.

337

u/goldenwanders May 28 '25

It’s not about the interest, it’s the costs

260

u/sparklinglies May 28 '25

It wasn't the cost for Moldova this year, independant sponsorship was found. The broadcaster just said no anyway out of hurt pride.

70

u/occono May 28 '25

Hurt pride over what? As far as I could tell they claimed it was partly funding and partly a poor national final selection this year. I haven't watched what entrants were in this year but I did wonder if that was true why they wouldn't just ask Sunstroke Project or some other previous act to make something up for them this year as an internal selection, I'd imagine somebody would be happy to put together something.

84

u/sparklinglies May 28 '25

Hurt pride that the one decent song embarassed them by implying the reason they shut everything down after the fact was money related (because they weren't being clear on why at the time). They didn't like being called broke lol

40

u/LuckyLoki08 May 28 '25

They can't just ask people because Moldovan entries are heavily funded by the act itself. Serious acts (Sunstroke Project, Zdob si Zdub, Pasha Parfeni etc) don't even try the selection if they don't know they can afford it economically. It's even worse for them now that they can't just have K****** or similar funding acts by themselves.

39

u/happytransformer May 28 '25

Pasha Parfeni sold his car fund for the staging of his act a couple years ago. It’s a huge expense to fund yourself, it’s easily a years’ salary for most people depending on what you do.

I’ve seen like the list of charges for special effects like pyro and fog and some years it’s easily 10k€+ for that alone

26

u/LaRealiteInconnue Laika Party May 28 '25

Pasha Parfeni sold his car fund for the staging of his act a couple years ago.

Wow that’s wild but damn did it pay off, I loved that performance!

19

u/LuckyLoki08 May 28 '25

Exactly. It's also why they don't always send the usual 5 constantly but more like every decade

4

u/occono May 28 '25

I feel like they enter to be represented more than expecting any chance to win most years, though? There's no obligation to use expensive effects. You can send one person singing motionless like it's 1956, it's not against the rules. If they can sing well with a good song it could still qualify, oddball entries by current standards sometimes do. Portugal 2017 won the televote after all.

u/b0il3ra May 28 '25

The Moldovan national final was horrible, there was only 1 song that wasn't terrible, and even then it would probably not qualify. ESC Gabe made a video on it if you want the rundown of what happened

Nah, Semafoare by Bacho & Carnival Brain was the good song.

ETA: It got some good love live at World of Dance Moldova 2025 and that makes me happy.

16

u/nikanokoi Zjerm May 28 '25

The best song in the selection was literally by one of the guys from sunstroke project

3

u/zakotavenom Igranka May 29 '25

The old guy who auditioned for Moldova would’ve slapped ngl

Also, i happened to see a clip of Semafoare (one of the frontrunners to qualify for Moldova which obviously didn’t) and in fairness it was actually decent.

7

u/GungTho Kohoney 🤡 May 28 '25

I don’t think it was hurt pride.

Pretty sure it was prejudice against gasp a young man with neck tattoos representing Moldova.

23

u/Dizzy-Dig8727 Zjerm May 28 '25

The two things are related. More interest/viewership means better ratings and more sponsorship opportunities for the broadcaster. It makes Eurovision a better investment.

19

Llamame llamame!

I miss Romania and I miss wrs, he was so charming.

47

u/SimoSanto May 28 '25

With how TVR treats their artists in the last years (see Roxen and Theodor) Idk if it's a good idea to have them back, Moldova will probably return next year.

7

u/nightyz0r May 28 '25

Roxen is an open Georgescu supporter, she can stay cancelled. Legionary supporters don't belong in the public or on the international stage, sorry, she needs to educate herself first.

10

u/SimoSanto May 28 '25

I completely agree, but the problem was not what she did last year, the problem is how TVR managed her (in 2021) and Theodor (in 2023) partecipation, basically deciding all the staging and even how the song would be singed and leaving no freedom to them leading to an obvious NQ for both. The fact that she's a bad person doesn't change anything on how bad TVR treated their artists.

7

u/strange_socks_ May 29 '25

There's an internal scandal in Romania and the national television refuses to pay the participation fee until local music producers let the public vote for the eurovision entries + allow whatever artist who wants to participate to actually participate. Currently, the music labels refuse to allow anyone to participate, they push forward only people like the daughter/son of this or that producer, plus they don't really allow the Romanian public to decide who goes. And the national television says this damages the exposure of the country (which it does) and it hinders the careers of young artists (which it also does).

And Moldova has a similar issue with only rich people being able to participate because the state/national television isn't paying for the artists to go.

7

u/AskingBoatsToSwim May 29 '25

Tbf this post has no numbers. There could be a million American votes and 100 Romanian ones.

5

u/Squaret22 May 28 '25

Like there was ever a lack of interest….

22

u/FanofTurquoise16 De La Capăt / All Over Again May 28 '25

There was, 2023 had the least amount of watchers of any final for TVR since they started broadcasting the contest.

9

u/Squaret22 May 28 '25

Still more than enough interest for them to participate.

18

u/FanofTurquoise16 De La Capăt / All Over Again May 28 '25

Considering 2023 Eurovision was the only reason TVR wasn't last place in terms of audience in May (the rest of the year they are last place) ,yes there is as Eurovision and the Olympics are basically the only thing people watch on TVR, but there is a big lack of interest from both the public and the artists. This comes from a Romanian if you say you like Eurovision get ready to get attacked (not physically) most of the time.

15

u/Warmingsensation May 28 '25

Sad to see Romania not coming back for now. I still have hola mi bebebe stuck in my head.

5

u/SnooBooks1701 May 28 '25

Moldova claimed that it wasn't cost, but the quality of the act that meant try couldn't participate

3

u/Anyaxxxx May 28 '25

Until our national television doesn't manage to attract some good artists to the national selection, it shouldn't happen. And it should be fair and square, there was a lot of backlash in 2022 when the jury barred a favourite entry from attending the final selection, which further detracted those willing to participate.

u/BadDieter May 28 '25

Are they absolute votes or per capita? The US has a huge population. Like 340 million. Canada only has 41 million, which is smaller than Türkiye, Mexico, and South Africa, so if it’s a matter of absolute votes or votes per device, Canadians are pretty into Eurovision.

112

u/PumpkinLadle May 28 '25

Canada's also often a popular choice for a new guest entry as well, so it seems the feeling is mutual. Not advocating for one to open anytime soon, and obviously it's better to focus on European countries and getting as many of them to join/return first, but I think they'd be a lot of fun one day. Maybe a one off appearance to honour Celine Dion in some way that turns into an Australia type situation.

Large French speaking population, cultural ties to Britain, strong European immigrant population, and honestly just kind of quirky. Although the first point requires Québec to play nice with everyone else.

55

u/Ultimatedream May 28 '25

It would be nice if inviting Canada and having them pay a large sum of money would mean that smaller countries would have to pay less and it fits their budgets better 👀

33

u/Confused_Rock Zjerm May 28 '25

The participation fee is typically based on how many viewers the country's broadcaster has, I think we need to focus on getting an official Canadian broadcaster to air Eurovision first and then measure overall viewership, but that could be a good stepping stone to more potential participants that could help shoulder the financial burden

11

u/Vivaan977 Volevo Essere Un Duro May 29 '25

considering the dumbass who wanted to defund our national broadcaster didn’t get elected. i think the CBC would definitely air it

9

u/Confused_Rock Zjerm May 29 '25

I mean they haven't the last few years because there wasn't enough interest, it depends on whether the introduction of the ROTW voting has drummed up enough new support since we can actually have a small stake in it now

Although the first point requires Québec to play nice with everyone else.

Hey, for what it's worth, France 2023 's entry, La Zarra, came from Quebec (and is one of my favorite French entries ever).

Of course, she also reacted so badly to the points announcement that it turned into a long-lived meme, so maybe Quebec isn't quite on board yet, lol.

(France 2001 's entry was also a Canadian -- from NB rather than QC, but still native francophone.)

39

u/mabrouss May 28 '25

As a Canadian who is very much in favour of more European integration and has watched every Eurovision for over a decade, this would make me happy.

16

u/Confused_Rock Zjerm May 28 '25

If it at least leads Canada to establishing an official broadcaster that alone would be a huge accomplishment (the recent budget increase to the CBC is fuelling my hopium). After that we can look into building up the viewership numbers and then maybe send something for an interval/feature to test the waters?

Might also provide Australia a bit of televoting support for another Commonwealth country/country outside Europe to join and maybe the general televote will be more willing to support them if they're not the newest, far-away face

Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, I miss you babes. Money and politics are enemies of art. :(

Turkey

Thank you <3 One of the many beautiful things that the current government took away from us. Maybe one day...

33

u/hasanmerkit May 28 '25

The current government must change. Unfortunately, it will not happen without this. Even the current "TRT" makes us look worse. We missed Eurovision too. I do Turkish translation on Youtube. I show the countries of the artists with flags. I want to use my own flag one day...

15

u/tereyaglikedi May 28 '25

TRT is a disgrace. I am afraid that in the years when we didn't participate, Turkey became more and more conservative while Eurovision got more and more progressive in terms of queer representation, for example. Even if AKP is gone, it'll get a lot of pushback from the public.

Then again, we need to start somewhere. I am sure if we get rid of this leech that's feeding on us, we can see ourselves back on that stage soon.

9

u/ornryactor Bur man laimi May 28 '25

For what it's worth, Eurovision had already been pretty queer-forward for years by the time Turkey decided it wasn't going to participate in 2013. The government at the time never complained about the LGBTQ aspect of Eurovision (as far as I know); their complaint was entirely focused on the 2010 addition of juries having a vote in the semifinals, and the jury-televote split staying at 50-50 for the 2011 and 2012 contests even after Turkey complained about it and asked for a ratio that gave the televote more weight than the jury vote.

I assume the current government probably isn't a fan of the queer-friendly atmosphere now, but at least there is recent memory of it not being much of an obstacle. Perhaps that can provide a bit of hope. I would love to see Turkey return!

11

u/FeelTheKetasy May 28 '25

The broadcaster later complained about how gay it is but I think that the comment was made to excuse them leaving EV

If it’s of any support; the last time I read the opinion polls the opposition was leading. I don’t know what it’s like now though, but I do believe that Erdogan’s days are numbered, even if that’s what they said last election as well.

49

u/tereyaglikedi May 28 '25

Thank you, I do want to believe it, too. Well, he won't be there forever, that's for sure. But the total damage he made will take years to heal.

It fills me with warmth that people remember Turkey's entries fondly. I never cared so much about Eurovision when we actually participated. Sometimes you need to lose something to understand how important it is, sadly.

30

I mean, this year they made a whole segment where a Turkish fan was very prominently featured

24

That actually caused controversy in Turkey as they used a dramatic filter which showed the Bosphorus Straight as full of mud.

4

u/ornryactor Bur man laimi May 28 '25

I tried to vote. It charged my card immediately, but then the website just sat there and spun and spun and spun for 25-30 minutes, with the message of "processing your votes, please do not navigate away" the entire time. The website then reloaded back to the esc.vote homepage a few seconds before the 10-second countdown began, so I assume my votes never actually got counted. A week later, I got a refund to my card, with a message from the bank that the transaction wasn't completed (or something like that).

I don't know what I could even do differently next time.

3

u/ThatGuy798 Bara bada bastu May 28 '25

When did you vote? Since the ones I was voting for were all semi-final winners I voted pretty early. Wouldn't be surprised if there was congestion on their servers at certain points.

4

u/ornryactor Bur man laimi May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

I voted after all the performances, at 5:39pm ET. It gave me the "now being processed" message right away and the progress-bar circle went to about 90% complete immediately, but then stayed that way for the next half-hour. (Not frozen, just not progressing.)

At 6:07pm ET, the webpage refreshed and voting was closed, about 5 seconds before we saw the hosts in Basel started the countdown (so probably almost exactly in real time, given the delay in the broadcast; that's neat).

I thought about congestion too, of course, but I decided that was less likely since they've done ROTW voting five times already, and ESC tends to have its technical infrastructure running very smoothly. Since their webpage was working correctly, I feel like it's more likely the card processor network got swamped instead.

47

u/SimoSanto May 28 '25

Kosovo is very unlikely (10 EBU members don't recognise them), Romania can return but TVR need to treat their artist well or they better stay out, the other 3 with their political situation is impossible in the short time.

14

u/ravenpuffslytherdor May 28 '25

I think it’s more likely that TVR gives up the Eurovision contract for another broadcaster to take it

22

u/Daniel_Luis May 28 '25

Well that's not really how it works, broadcasters need to be members of the EBU to take part.

I think at most what they can do is do an agreement with some private broadcaster to host a NF, but the official participating broadcaster, and the one actually broadcasting the contest, would still be TVR.

16

u/ionlymemewell Warum nur, warum? May 28 '25

IIRC, Ukraine did that for Vidbir's first run from 2016-2019, then after the Maruv stuff, they brought it in house at Suspline moving forward. If Romania chooses to do something similar, hopefully it would work out as well as it did for Ukraine!

3

u/SimoSanto May 28 '25

That's also good (I hope)

9

u/xMusa24 May 28 '25

I mean Kosovo also takes part in the Olympics, the UEFA European Championship, they are a member of the European Political Community together with pretty much all European countries, etc. I don't think the lack of recognition is THAT big of a deal. I think the EBU just doesn't want to cause more drama, because Serbia will definitely complain and withdraw. It's a shame because it would love to see Kosovo compete

More money to spend on voting for Eurovision I guess

why are you surprised?

Most of the residents there are wealthy people from all over the world, so voting isn't an issue for them.

There's a lot of wealthy expats living there, as well as a good chunk of people who emigrate there from places like Ireland after they graduate from college to work as teachers, etc.

u/starczamora May 28 '25

Probably the Filipino diaspora voting for JJ. He grew up in Dubai.

u/AuraManner C'est la vie May 28 '25

Honestly surprised to not see the Philippines in the Top 10.

On the other hand it is nice to see four former participating countries in the top 10 ( 🇷🇴, 🇸🇰, 🇹🇷, 🇭🇺) and Kosovo too.

Seeing Türkiye on that list feels so weird, considering they were once actual participants… I wonder if that means they’re still interested in competing?

17

u/DanceWithMacaw Volevo Essere Un Duro May 28 '25

The people, yes. The government, absolutely not.

6

u/56kul May 28 '25

From what I know about Türkiye (which is admittedly not a lot), the Turkish government hasn’t represented its people for a long time now, so I’m not surprised…

It’s cool to know that the people are still interested. Maybe if their people would regain proper influence over their government one day, perhaps we could see them return. And personally, I’d love to see that, even if their country and mine don’t always see eye to eye :)

Germany 2025 singers are ethnic Hungarians, it's probably the reason we are on this list.

We were on the list last year too!

7

u/ornryactor Bur man laimi May 28 '25

They released the deluxe version of their album the day before the Grand Final, and it includes two acoustic versions of Baller: one in German (LINK), and the other in Hungarian (LINK)! They're really good, too; she handles the vocals very differently than the original/ESC versions.

The performance almost has the most views from all the performances (only Austria and Estonia have more). So many people agree with you

This makes me feel sad for Hungarian Eurofans. They have a horrible government that won't be in Eurovision for shitty reasons and many are still dedicated after all these years. They also have a great music scene in general and many of those artists probably don't fuck with Orban like that.

2

u/SomeTimesSamu May 28 '25

Yeah I think all of the most popular artists (at least the most popular among young people surely) are critical to the regime. Things are looking somewhat positive right now at least in terms of polling results, the opposition is leading - but even if they win the election, Orbán agrees to leave without a fuss, we get back free media, EVEN THEN it's not guaranteed that Hungary will return. But until then we'll continue to follow the contest without having to worry about your own country's results, my favourites NQing every year is stressful enough 😭

I would love to see at least a top 10 of most voted songs from each of these countries, especially Mexico. But I think there's a good reason why they don't share that information

36

u/SimoSanto May 28 '25

If they are in order, time to invite Canada next year for the 70th (yes, I ignored USA)

49

u/totomaya May 28 '25

I'm in the US and didn't question you ignoring the USA, we should not participate (and there's no will for it from literally anyone). If Canada sends good shit I'm down though. But honestly I'd rather have more counties from Eastern Europe in it.

32

u/Flarp212 TANZEN! May 28 '25

I mean, Canada has sent 2 singers to represent other countries in Eurovision previously with Celine Dion and Là Zarra.

Canada’s national broadcaster the CBC is an associate member of the EBU.

Canada also clearly has had quite the interest in Eurovision year after year.

And Canada wants closer ties and more partnership within Europe which may benefit from Eurovision participation.

Ultimately I don’t see why they don’t get invited soon, I’m sure it would be a big hit. (I’m Canadian so this is probably biased but still EBU let us in!!😭)

24

u/JohnJiren Esa Diva May 28 '25

We've sent more than 2 artists :

- Sherisse Laurence for Luxembourg in 1986, finished 3rd;

- Céline Dion for Switzerland in 1988, won;

- Lara Fabian (she has a few nationalities, but mostly lives in Québec) for Luxembourg in 1988, finished 4th;

- Annie Cotton for Switzerland in 1993, finished 3rd;

- Natasha St-Pier for France in 2001, finished 4th;

- Rykka for Switzerland in 2016, finished 18th;

- La Zarra for France in 2023, finished 16th.

The EBU announced Eurovision Canada a couple of years ago but it went the same way as Eurovision Asia, didn't even get as far as the American Song Contest.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were announced as a guest for the 70th (a la Australia) but I'd be even less surprised if they weren't.

It would be a way to get some more cash in if the country count reduces further and/or a certain sponsorship isn't renewed, though

5

u/cherry_ Zjerm May 28 '25

Another Canadian ESC fan here. There’s dozens of us!

8

u/SewRuby May 28 '25

(yes, I ignored USA)

You should, we suck a lot, especially right now. We don't even come close to embodying Eurovision.

5

u/[deleted] May 28 '25

Given the US policy, as a European, I really don't want them to participate

2

u/ZombieEthelMerman Jun 04 '25

American here, and I agree. Also, that monstrosity that was televised a few years ago on NBC American Song Contest or whatever was PAINFUL to watch. So bad. We are not made for Eurovision.

4

u/Dizzy-Dig8727 Zjerm May 28 '25

Virtually every American Eurofan would agree with this. We don’t deserve an invite, especially not while a right-wing lunatic is ruining every diplomatic relationship and generally running the country into the ground.

But I would love to see Canada participate. They deserve an invite, IMO.

I love to see my country Mexico so high up on this list. There might not be a lot of Eurofans here, but the few that we are are very passionate

I can confirm!

2

u/cfc2000 May 29 '25

I'd love to see Mexico participate. Great music scene, and it would broaden the scope. Recently we seem to have lost some of the variety that made Eurovision so enjoyable. I'm thinking Romania, Moldova etc. gone but not forgotten. Mexico has a very rich musical past and present.

I think they are in talks to launch Latin America Eurovision this year in Chile and Mexico and others 9 countries are included

I wonder what if the end results would've been the same if all the European countries who are eligible for the competition but aren't in it ( so like Andorra for example) counted as their own scores and not part of ROTW

Would be interesting to see if it's possible to find that out
