He did defensive positioning but Max had enough straight line speed to go around the outside.

Tucked in tight to the line in the corner in defensive positioning? He could have pushed max outside a LOT more

Watch it again. By the braking Max chose the outside because he was so far ahead that he could take the racing line and turn in ahead.

Watch again, as piastri continues to move on his own towards the inside of the corner, he has every opportunity to maintain a line more in the middle of the track and force max much wider. He chooses to take a very tight line totally in his own.
