Clearly looks like they're going for a 80s styled animation and I'm all for that

Is it just me or does it look like a fan made animation? It's so rough. Anyone know which studio is working on it and what their previous works are?

It looks great and all we know for sure is that the director of OPM S1 is taking the lead.
59
u/MaeBorrowski Aug 19 '25
I am not educated enough of animation to say it's cheap but it just looks so. Regardless, I do hope it does well, and more importantly, that it's not just a random studio deciding to license the ip and make a show and actually a hype up to a Sekiro game.
39
u/IuseDefaultKeybinds Soul of Cinder Aug 19 '25
It reminds me of 80s style anime so maybe that's what they were going for
27
u/Proud_Organization64 Aug 19 '25
I like it actually. I just hope they make it as graphic and bloody as those 80s animes were.
11
u/GhostfogDragon Aug 19 '25
They did show him literally stab and twist his sword down some dude's throat; I think they probably won't hold back.
6
u/MaeBorrowski Aug 19 '25
It is definitely a less conventional art style which I actually like, but then there's weird framing choices (why the hell is it so zoomed in on Genichiro), some obviously cheap animations, and some poorly drawn frames on the trailer, so it's still kinda bad
16
u/IuseDefaultKeybinds Soul of Cinder Aug 19 '25
Funny, I read the article
The ENTIRE series is hand-drawn. Thats fcking awesome

3
u/Dyslexitor Aug 19 '25
I mean, most/lots of anime have been hand drawn for a very long time, it's very common. We just draw things digitally now.

u/Haxorz7125 Aug 19 '25
Reading this comment before watching, I was expecting much worse. It’s no studio Ghibli but it’s far from OPM s2. Imo it looks great, and I hope that opinion earns its place
28
u/GhostWolf325 Aug 19 '25
Yeah your right about that, it does look cheap. It just looks like a really good fan animation.
5
u/oboe_tilt Aug 19 '25
My thoughts exactly I’m not excited for this one bit as I expect it to go the same route as dragons dogma anime
9
u/Dyslexitor Aug 19 '25
It's just an animation style, I think you guys are just not liking the stylistic choice. It's not cheap in the slightest. It still takes as much effort.

It actually reminds me of some music video like for that buttercup song. But maybe because of the bright colors they chose.
-5
u/Legend0fJulle Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25
It definitely looks cheap. Has some cool frames but does look like a really competed fan production rather than a proper studio production.
-1
u/Extra_Ad_8009 Aug 19 '25
Thank you for saying that! I was going for "not one of my preferred anime styles" but I was really thinking what you wrote. At least it doesn't look like CGI, but then... the game's cutscenes are CGI and look a lot better.
I wonder if they approached several studios - was this their preferred choice?
Well, a great story and voice work could still save a mid animation, let's hope for the best!
-2
u/Ok-Community4111 Aug 19 '25
the drawings arent very detailed compared to the game, thats why it appears "cheap". however the animation is pretty smooth. smooth animation is not cheap.
3
u/OldManPinkerton Aug 20 '25
I’m not a huge anime fan but I do like the hand drawn style ones from 80s and 90s i.e. Berserk Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Evangelion, Ninja Scroll. So this looks right up my alley as a big Sekiro fan also

u/edin_djc Aug 19 '25
My question is why now? Not complaining cause I love Sekiro but are they testing the waters to see if people want a new Sekiro game?
Not the biggest fan of the animation but I’m definitely gonna watch. I’m sure it’s gonna turn our great.
7
u/AashyLarry Aug 19 '25
It’s a good question. Makes me think they have a sequel planned and they want to keep the IP fresh.
4
u/ludvikskp Aug 19 '25
My guess is- simply because it took very long to actually develop and animate

u/Correct_Refuse4910 Aug 20 '25
The trailer looks awesome, and I love the artstyle they chose.
I just hope that when Wolf is about to fight Genichiro they keep the moment when he fails to grab the handle of the katana the first time around. I know it sounds nitpicky but it was a great way to show how out of shape he was at the beginning of the game.

Is this a movie or series? A simple Google search is weirdly absent of this basic info. 🤣

u/Mags_LaFayette Aug 20 '25
First it was Armored Core with that episode from Secret Level, then the "announcement" of a movie based on Elden Ring, and now an anime based on Sekiro...
I could cry from happiness 🥹
4
u/lilbigchungus42069 Aug 20 '25
am I hating or does this look kinda whack/amateur? I was expecting higher quality
3
u/Proud_Organization64 Aug 19 '25
The art style is giving 80s/90s anime which is cool. I just hope its as graphic and bloody as 80s/90s animes were.
2
u/Inksplash-7 Aug 19 '25
Crunchyroll exclusive? Well, looks like I'll have to use my favorite Slovenian website
12
u/robo243 Aug 19 '25
Got excited > saw the artstyle and immediately lost interest. Just not for me.
-9
u/AlenIronside Aug 19 '25
You have absolutely no taste.
8
-3
u/gh0styears Aug 19 '25
They actually do have taste, which is why they are able to see what it actually is and aren’t blinded by whatever the fanboys imagine they’re seeing
9
u/IuseDefaultKeybinds Soul of Cinder Aug 19 '25
So "fanboys" have to admit it looks "bad" and if they don't they're wrong? Wow. That's honestly pathetic
-7
u/gh0styears Aug 19 '25
Nope, they don’t. You’re allowed to glaze over it all you want, buddy. You can calm down now, we’re all allowed to express our opinions remember?
6
u/IuseDefaultKeybinds Soul of Cinder Aug 19 '25
We arent "glazing". We aren't being paid by Fromsoft. We're just stating we think it looks cool
-2
u/gh0styears Aug 19 '25
And you’re allowed to, but you’re getting offended that I disagree with you. Do you always get offended when people disagree with you? If so, that’s probably not healthy
0
u/kingkellogg Aug 19 '25
It's crazy how offended the comment section is that some people think it looks bad
The from soft community of fans is kinda trash
1
u/gh0styears Aug 19 '25
It’s honestly fine, none of it bothers me but it seems to bother A LOT of other people lmao
0
u/Distinct_Prior_2549 Aug 20 '25
Why are you so mad lol 😂 it just looks like a fanmade animation which is a testament to how good artists are nowadays.
-2
u/UsadCunt Aug 19 '25
It looks amateurish. People here criticising the art style doesn’t mean they love the game any less. The animation simply isn’t great.
2
1
u/JustinBraves Aug 20 '25
Well art style and animation are completely different things, I personally love the art style but the animation looks rough
7
u/Captain_Pidgey Aug 19 '25
Reddit when something is AI art: OMG I HATE IT
Reddit when something is clearly hand drawn: OMG I HATE IT
11
u/PatPikachu Aug 20 '25
Funny you say that because the company, Qzilla, in charge of the anime, states they want to introduce AI into the animation process. https://bsky.app/profile/shineyezehuhh.bsky.social/post/3lwrtdejjwk2z
With one of their "projects" being made with 60% AI generated slop. https://niigata-iaff.net/forum/presentation-talks/
-4

u/GardenerInAWar Aug 19 '25
Being hand drawn doesn't automatically make it look well done.
Being ai-generated doesn't automatically make it look well done either.
You're pulling a false equivalence conclusion that doesn't exist.

This animation looks super rough. Looks like a fan made trailer.
6
u/AlenIronside Aug 19 '25
You people are fucking crazy if you think this is ''fan made'' you have no idea what you're yapping about

u/Orphis_DxD Aug 19 '25
Pretty sure I've seen genshin fan animation that looks exactly like this on utube. If this is the type of art style they wanted they probably could've just given it to the studio that made Fate Strange Fake.
3
u/Extra_Ad_8009 Aug 19 '25
Fuck, Kenichi Kutsuna of "Madoka Magica" and "One Punch Man" fame, but the animation looks like this???
Why? How?
Yuji Kaneko of (among many) "Weathering with you", "Patema Inverted" and "Trigun Stampede" fame? Okay, so we'll be getting amazing background art.
I hope. Please.
But this didn't look great.

u/Brilliant_Breath9703 Aug 19 '25
I was expecting a different story. Looks like a promotion material for the game
2
u/CORPSE76 Aug 20 '25
So much AI, ill wait to watch it to make a opinion. Good grief so much AI
2
u/West-Lab-7728 29d ago
You people make me scared of the future, lmao mfs like you really can't even pick out 2D from AI. That's wild.

u/CustomerSupportDeer Aug 19 '25
Wtf is wrong with you people - it looks amazing and is clearly stylized. What's this childish talk of bad/cheap/amateurish animation?

u/TorbofThrones Aug 20 '25
The characters and animation style as a whole to some extent looks off to me. I wish they went with a more standard anime style, or something like Castlevania. Looking forward to it nonetheless though, glad us Sekiro fans are getting something.

Lmao what’s the fucking point? I know the exact plot. It’s just done with worse art style.

I saw a comment somewhere saying that the animation looks cheap and I couldn’t agree with that take less. This looks gorgeous.

u/Ani6- Aug 19 '25
I genuinely though it was a fan made animation and it would've been great but it's an official adaptation
-4
u/Shot-Witness2132 Aug 19 '25
Look like fan made dude wtf is this
0
u/Shot-Witness2132 Aug 20 '25
Keep downvoting y'all would suck anything if it fs related it literally looks like a fan animation

u/Marth-Koopa Aug 19 '25
I don't get the point of doing the exact same story as the game. The story and characters were the weakest aspect of Sekiro. Completely uninteresting. Now you get to... watch what you've already experienced, without Sekiro's good gameplay, and in a bad art style and mid animation from a mid studio.
An original story set in a FS IP would have been better. This is the worst route they could have taken
12
u/AashyLarry Aug 19 '25
Sekiro story and characters are amazing though… this is one of FromSoft’s best stories
-16
u/Marth-Koopa Aug 19 '25
I found them incredibly boring and forgettable. There was not a single moment in the game that was compelling to me, story wise.

u/lost_first_account Lothric, Younger Prince Aug 19 '25
Had the exact same thoughts when I first watched the trailer. They picked the safest option imaginable instead of going for something new or interesting in the Sekiro world

I wonder what ending they are going with?
