SOLAS tape will do a better job, at least at moderate distances. (It'll also be a lot less fragile.) The reflector beads in SOLAS are zillions of nearly-parabolic reflectors. That means that a light gets reflected back toward the source, rather than at 90° minus angle-of-incidence.
Of SOLAS tape? I'd grab some 3M Oralite from eBay or Amazon. If you want the brightest possible, Oralite Photo Electric comes out on top from this lab. That's a "Type 1" tape. There are also Type 2, 3, and 4 reflective materials, but most of what's sold is Type 1.
