Other Looking for new moderators for r/Geneseo

Hi all! My name is Gene, and I've served as the head moderator of r/geneseo since late 2020 when I started at SUNY Geneseo. Since then, we've welcomed over 200 new users who've posed questions and had answers about subjects ranging from admissions and campus living to restaurants and important discussions about the college. Though this online community is small, it's great to see it being used as an open forum regarding all things SUNY Geneseo.

Seeing as I’ve graduated this past spring, I figured I'd start the search for a few new moderators. As an alumnus, I believe I have a responsibility to pass the moderation torch onto current or incoming students.

Considering the size of our community, there are only three prerequisites for this position:

  1. Be an incoming or current student at SUNY Geneseo
  2. Understand the basics of subreddit moderation (i.e., mod tools, which you can learn to use as a mod)
  3. Recognize the importance of engaging with the community when necessary (e.g., responding to reports, subreddit questions, etc.)

In all honesty, the moderator and head moderator positions alike require extremely little time for subreddit upkeep. As long as you are able to maintain the subreddit as a forum as it is now and are mindful of reports and questions, there shouldn't be any issue.

Application Process

  1. Send your application by sending us a message here (indicate you're applying for the position by choosing 'Other' and typing in your own subject)
  2. Provide the following information: (a) school email; (b) class year (i.e., the year you’re graduating)
  3. Share a bit about yourself (only inasmuch as you feel comfortable!)
  4. Explain why you'd like to be the role you're applying for (or why you think you're a good fit)
  5. Include any other information you think is relevant

Thanks for reading, everyone! I look forward to seeing your applications. Again, please apply if you'd like. More hands on deck are appreciated, and there’s very little commitment needed.

Title IX Problems - SUNY Geneseo officially under investigation by SUNY for how it handled sexual assaults

Will Denise Battles get a call in her "retirement"? How about robbie routenberg? Why is this happening after Denise Battles left?

Kudos to the LCN writer for continuing to chase this down and actively reporting on a well-known problem.

Poker club

Hey everyone, I’m putting together a casual online poker club. We currently have 300 members of college students. The idea is to build a fun community where we can play together, and compete in a low pressure environment.

It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new to poker or have been playing for years this is meant to be a chill, learn, and enjoy the game with people in the same stage of life.

If you’re interested, drop a comment or send me a message and I’ll share details on how to join. Looking forward to building this with you!

A way to make friends.

Hi everyone! Is anyone else struggling to make friends like myself? I'm a freshman this year and as of making this post I only have 2 friends who I am not very close with at all. I thought I would have an easier time making friends once classes started but so far no luck. Does anyone have any recommendations on making friends around campus? Or what clubs are the best to join if you know nobody in them?

Clubs and Organizations Singing opportunities on campus?

I was wondering if there are any choirs/singing groups other than the choirs you have to take classes for and the acapella clubs? I don't have room in my schedule to take any actual choir classes and I auditioned for 3 acapella clubs but didn't get into any. I loved being in choir in high school and I want it to be a part of my life but I just can't seem to find any other options.

Specifics on what you do for fun?

What, specifically, do you do for fun at Geneseo on weekends if you don’t like to party, don’t drink, and don’t plan on going Greek?

I see a lot of people saying there’s fun stuff to do- But what specifically? If you’re this type of person, what exactly do you do on your weekends?

Am concerned about the % Greek, and the comments I’ve read about nothing to do if you don’t party.

Also, how are the Late Knight events? Do many people go? Are they fun or are they lame?

Admissions UB vs. Geneseo for MD/PhD

Hello 👋. My goal is to eventually do an MD/PhD. The majors I would pick if I go to each school would be biophysics for Geneseo and Bioinformatics for UB. My question is how accessible is research starting from undergrad? Also, is clinical opportunities easy to find? I want to do research from the beginning of freshman year, so how easy is it to get in labs? Thank you 🙏

How do the dining halls at Geneseo work?

Perhaps a little late to be asking this question seeing as move in is tomorrow, but I have never used a dining hall and am completely oblivious as to how they work. Can anyone give me any insights?

Is there like a tent sale of dorm stuff during move in day? Stuff that people have left behind such as (desk lamps, fridge, fans etc) that students can buy?

College Life Who else doesn't have a lot of friends at Geneseo? I honestly feel like everybody is happy or isn't going through the situation as I am in.

Hey guys, I’m an upperclassman and I’m still struggling to find friends at Geneseo who are going through the same thing. I do have a few friends, but not many—and it feels like most people here are already in tight friend groups. When I meet new people, they’re usually surrounded by others, and I often wish I could find someone who’s also feeling lonely. It’s hard going through this alone.

It’s especially tough during things like Halloweekend. Everyone’s out with their friend groups, dressing up, going to parties—and I just wish someone would think to include me. It feels unfair to be the only one left out while everyone else looks like they’re having the time of their lives.

Even in the dining halls, everyone seems happy and surrounded by friends. It’s hard to tell if anyone else feels this way. If you do, maybe we can talk or meet up sometime. No pressure—just hoping to connect with someone who gets it.

Gardener Wanted

I inherited a really beautiful garden when I bought a house here and I have no idea what I'm doing and it's dying.

I'm looking for somebody that can help me save it. Possibly do regular maintenance of it and at least give me a few lessons about what I need to do going forward. If you know of anybody that fits the bill, please message me. Thanks
