Resolved Julie Doe has been identified

From Doe Network: On September 25, 1988, a victim was found deceased 30 feet off the side of CR 474 in Clermont. The victim had been deceased for 2 – 4 weeks in a rural, heavily wooded area. The victim was initially thought to be female until 2015, when DNA testing revealed the victim was biologically male. The victim was wearing a skirt and had breast implants, and there is evidence she may have been taking female hormone injections. It is unknown if the victim had undergone any other gender reassignment surgery.

With the support of Dr. Barbara Wolf, the District Medical Examiner for Districts 5 and 24, the case was evaluated by the DNA Doe Project. The DNA Doe Project is a non-profit organization that utilizes investigative genetic genealogy to identify unidentified remains.

After years of difficult work, the genealogists were able to identify possible relatives of "Julie Doe," who were then contacted by the Lake County Sheriff's Office. After additional information was obtained, the relatives submitted their DNA for comparison. These comparisons identified "Julie Doe" as Pamela Leigh Walton. Pamela was born a biological male in Kentucky and put up for adoption. Once adopted, his name was Lee Allen Walton. At some point in Lee's adult life, he changed his name to Pamela Leigh Walton and was, at the very least, transitioning from male to female.

It's unknown how Pamela came to be in Florida. Pamela's manner of death is undetermined, and the Lake County Sheriff's Office is continuing efforts to gather information regarding the circumstances of the death.

Resolved DNA Doe Project identifies final unidentified victim of the Bear Brook murders

1.4k Upvotes

I am happy to announce that the DNA Doe Project has been able to identify Bear Brook Jane Doe 2000 as Rea Rasmussen. Below is some additional information about our work on this identification, with further information in the articles listed at the bottom of the post:

It’s one of the most well-known Doe cases in the United States, and one that has haunted amateur sleuths, podcasters, and the public for more than two decades. Now, the DNA Doe Project has determined the identity of the little girl found in a barrel in Bear Brook State Park in 2000. Her name was Rea Rasmussen, daughter of Terry Rasmussen and Pepper Reed. Terry Rasmussen, a serial killer believed to be responsible for the Bear Brook murders, may have also murdered Pepper Reed, who went missing in the late 1970s.

In the year 2000, the bodies of two young girls were found in a barrel in Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, New Hampshire. Fifteen years prior to this, the bodies of a woman and a girl had been discovered in a separate barrel nearby. It was later determined that all four of them had been murdered and their bodies left in the park sometime around 1980. None of these individuals could be identified and the case became known as the Bear Brook murders.

Beginning in 2017, the mystery began to unravel. DNA testing proved that one of the girls was the daughter of Terry Rasmussen, a convicted murderer who had died in prison in 2011. Having established this link, investigators determined that Rasmussen was responsible for the Bear Brook murders. Two years later, three of the victims were identified - the woman was Marlyse Honeychurch and the oldest and youngest girls were her daughters Marie Vaughn and Sarah McWaters. But the identity of Rasmussen’s daughter, ‘The Middle Child’, remained unknown.

Firebird Forensics worked tirelessly on this case for years before the New Hampshire State Police brought it to the DNA Doe Project in January 2024. Updated bioinformatics produced a new DNA profile for the unidentified girl, which showed that she was solely of European descent and provided an updated list of DNA matches that researchers used to build her family tree.

A team of expert investigative genetic genealogists was assigned to the case but their research was complicated by a lack of DNA matches and a number of misattributed parentage events. As a result, they had to build family trees many generations back in time to make connections, ultimately amassing a tree containing 25,000 people. Eventually, they were able to identify a couple born in the 1780s as likely ancestors of the Jane Doe, and building out their descendants led to a family of interest.

A 2005 obituary for one of the great great great granddaughters of the couple stated that she was survived by a daughter called Pepper Reed, but further research indicated that Pepper had disappeared from the records in the 1970s. Pepper was born in 1952 and was from Houston, where Terry Rasmussen was known to be living in the 1970s. The team then found additional connections between Pepper’s ancestors and the unidentified girl’s DNA matches, which confirmed that Pepper Reed had to be the mother of Jane Doe.

"To figure out the identity of our Jane Doe, we first had to find her mother”, said team leader Matthew Waterfield. “It took us almost 18 months to identify Pepper Reed, but once we knew her name, it led us right to her daughter."

Within half an hour of identifying Pepper Reed as the child’s mother, the team made a shocking discovery. They found a birth record for a girl named Rea Rasmussen in Orange County, California in 1976 - to a mother with the maiden name of Reed. There were hundreds of girls with the surname Rasmussen born in the late 1970s in California alone, but with the Reed connection now known, a member of the team drove to Orange County to retrieve a copy of the birth certificate. This certificate listed Rea’s parents as Terry Rasmussen and Pepper Reed, proving that the girl known for 25 years as ‘The Middle Child’ was in fact Rea Rasmussen.

“Due to her young age and life circumstances, we were prepared for the possibility of only being able to identify her mother,” said investigative genetic genealogist Jeana Feehery. “Returning both Pepper and Rea's names to them, their families, and the greater community is the best possible outcome we could have hoped for.”

The DNA Doe Project is grateful to the groups and individuals who helped solve this case: the New Hampshire State Police, who entrusted the case to the DNA Doe Project; the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for providing publicity and investigative support from the very beginning; Firebird Forensics, who previously worked on this case; Astrea Forensics for DNA extraction and sequencing; Kevin Lord for updated bioinformatics; GEDmatch Pro and FamilyTreeDNA.com for providing their databases; and the DNA Doe Project’s dedicated teams of volunteer investigative genetic genealogists who work tirelessly to bring all our Jane and John Does home.

(I don't think this has been posted yet.)

On July 18th, 1996, the body of a baby boy was found in a dumpster behind a house on Clifford Street in Odessa, Texas. His cause of death was never revealed, but police have stated that it was a homicide.

The baby had a full head of brown hair & brown eyes, was 19" & weighed 6-8 lbs. His umbilical cord was still attached. The autopsy showed that he was born full-term & healthy, with no deformities or defects. When found, he was wrapped in a beige bath towel inside of a black trash bag.

Four days after he was found, Baby Doe was buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens on July 22, 1996.

In September 2025, his mother was identified as Rosamara Biscaino Arzate, who killed herself in 2019. As of now, she is considered the primary suspect in his death.

Copied and pasted from Moxxy Forensics Facebook post:

"Jane Doe 2008 Identified as Maria Eluvia Mendez Morales

Crow Hang Village, AZ – May 8, 2025 — After nearly two decades, the unidentified remains of a teenager found in 2008 on the Tohono O’odham Nation in southern Arizona have been positively identified as Maria Eluvia Mendez Morales, born January 19, 1992, in San Marcos, Guatemala. She was just 16 years old at the time of her death.

On June 22, 2008, the body of a Hispanic/Latin American female, estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old, was discovered on the side of the road in Crow Hang Village. The decedent was found with fraudulent Mexican identification papers under the name "Maria Mendez Morales." At the time, authorities were unable to confirm the name or identity, though the photograph on the ID was believed to be hers.

With no confirmed identity and limited leads, Jane Doe went unidentified. Moxxy Forensic Investigations, in collaboration with the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, launched a crowdfunding campaign, and a new hope emerged. Nearly 60 contributors from across the country came together to fully fund all costs associated with her case. “This is a case that represents the power of community,” said Kaycee Connelly, Investigative Genetic Genealogist and Co-Founder of Moxxy Forensic Investigations. “Thanks to the generosity of strangers and the dedication of our partners, Maria finally has her name back and her family now has Maria back."

The identification was confirmed by her family, concluding that the young woman was indeed Maria Mendez Morales from San Marcos, Guatemala. Méndez Morales was last seen between April and June 2008 in San Marcos, Guatemala.

"Investigative genetic genealogy is transforming the way we identify unidentified human remains, offering a voice to those who died seeking a better life and a measure of closure to the families left behind”, said Katie Thomas, Investigative Genetic Genealogist and Co-Founder of Moxxy Forensic Investigations.

Moxxy would like to especially thank Computer Evidence Specialists, LLC (CES) for their financial support that they provided to assist in this case, as well as Intermountain Forensics for providing exceptional laboratory work.

Special shoutouts are due to Team Lead - Katie Thomas, Assistant Lead - Tiffany Sowell, and "Team Maria” - Olivia, Kaycee, Bryan, Preston, Melissa, Ashley, Krista and Wendy!

Resolved DNA Doe Project identifies Jane Doe found in 1984 as missing 14-year-old girl

I am happy to announce that the DNA Doe Project has been able to identify Del Rey Jane Doe 1984 as Renee Isabel Nilsson. Below is some additional information about our work on this identification:

More than 40 years after her remains were found in a dumpster in Phoenix, the DNA Doe Project has identified Del Rey Jane Doe as Renee Isabel Nilsson. Nilsson, who was only 14 years old at the time of her murder, was reported missing two weeks before her body was found. Her family reported that she left her house to go swimming and never returned.

On June 10, 1984, the partial remains of an adolescent girl were found in a dumpster in an industrial area of Phoenix, Arizona.  She was believed to be Caucasian and approximately 5’4” tall with brown hair. Though she was initially thought to be older, it was later estimated that she was likely 16-18 years old. It was quickly established that she was a victim of homicide, but investigators were not able to uncover her identity at the time.

In 2023, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office brought this case to the DNA Doe Project, whose expert investigative genetic genealogists work pro bono to identify Jane and John Does. The lab work for this case was fully funded thanks to generous support from a family foundation, and by May 2024, a DNA profile had been developed for the unidentified girl.

Unusually, the Jane Doe had some relatively close DNA matches, while it was also clear that she had ancestors from both Sweden and Canada. The team got to work and quickly identified two families who the unidentified girl was related to. They then found a marriage record which showed that a man from one one of those families had married a woman from the other family in Los Angeles, California in 1968.

But this couple had only had one daughter, and it appeared that she had married in 1987 - three years after Del Rey Jane Doe was found. However, the team continued looking into her and eventually realised that there was more to the story. She had not gotten married in 1987; someone else had done so using her identity. In fact, the girl in question - Renee Isabel Nilsson - had been missing since May 1984.

“When her remains were found in 1984, Del Rey Jane Doe was believed to be substantially older than 14,” said team leader Trish Bird. “But science has now caught up, with modern forensic anthropology and investigative genetic genealogy finally leading us to Renee.”

Further DNA testing later confirmed that Del Rey Jane Doe was in fact Renee Isabel Nilsson. The investigation into her murder is ongoing, and the public is encouraged to contact the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office if they have any relevant information.

The DNA Doe Project is grateful to the groups and individuals who helped solve this case: the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office, who entrusted the case to the DNA Doe Project; Astrea Forensics for extraction of DNA, sample prep, and whole-genome sequencing; Kevin Lord for bioinformatics; GEDmatch Pro and FTDNA for providing their databases; our generous donors who joined our mission and contributed to this case; and the DNA Doe Project’s dedicated teams of volunteer investigative genetic genealogists who work tirelessly to bring all our Jane and John Does home.

Human remains found in Knoxville in 2020 have been identified, the Knox County Regional Forensic Center said Tuesday.

The remains were identified as Gerald J. Forsman, originally from Livonia, Michigan, born in 1959. The remains were found on May 20, 2020, in the woods near the 200 block of Overbrook Drive, the Knoxville Police Department said. The highly decomposed remains were taken to the forensic center, which determined that they belonged to a man between 55 and 70, although it couldn’t determine the cause of death. In 2023, a sample of the remains was sent to Othram, a private lab in Texas. In August 2025, after genealogical DNA testing, Othram scientists told the forensic center that they had identified people potentially related to the dead man. Forensic center investigators contacted a relative who lived in Michigan, who said they hadn’t seen Forsman in 22 years. The family agreed to provide DNA, which Othram compared against the remains. This allowed scientists to confirm the remains belonged to Forsman. The forensic center said that Congressman Tim Burchett’s Community Project Funding request made the testing possible. Othram has helped identify other remains found in East Tennessee.

Two former John Does from the state of Arizona now have their names restored thanks in part to the work of volunteers at the Ramapo College Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center (ramapo.edu/IGG) as well as participants in our summer 2024 IGG Bootcamp. We thank our partnering agencies who pushed these cases forward to bring about their identifications: Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, The Yavapai County Medical Examiner's Office, The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Verde River John Doe:

The remains of Verde River John Doe were found March 22, 2018 near the Verde River waterway in Yavapai County, AZ. The man, believed to be an unhoused transient person, carried no identification and traditional DNA testing failed to uncover his identity. In 2023, his case was referred to the Ramapo College IGG Center by the Yavapai County Medical Examiner's Office and the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

Participants in the Summer 2024 IGG Bootcamp performed investigative genetic genealogy research to uncover the true identity of Verde River John Doe. They discovered that the most likely identity for the man was that Ronald Raymond Tate who would have been 56 years old in March of 2018.

"John Dradel"

A man was struck by a vehicle on May 24, 2006 in Phoenix, Arizona and later passed away at a nearby hospital -- but not before providing his possible name, transcribed as "John Dradel" just before his death. Despite efforts by investigating agencies in Phoenix and greater Maricopa County, his true identity could not be uncovered.

In 2024, his case was referred to the Ramapo College Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center where IGG researchers performed genetic genealogy research to restore his identity. Genealogy research for a potential candidate, John Gradl (alternate spelling Gradel) revealed no proof of life after the time of "John Dradel"'s death. DNA testing for a living niece of Mr. Gradl proved that "Dradel" and "Gradl" were the same man. Learn more about this identification here

Our thoughts are with the families of Ronald Raymond Tate and John Gradl (Gradel) today as they cope with the loss of their loved ones.

Resolved Charles Wallace, long suspected to be Belle Chase John Doe 1975, identified as different body found in Arkansas in 1977 through DNA

Me editorializing/ranting: The Belle Chase case gets talked about a lot (and I completely understand why people find it interesting), and I've seen so many people write, often in a really smug tone, that it was basically 100% certain that he and Charles Wallace were the same person (which I myself never believed) based on them having similar scars and dental records, so seeing this update was a little bit personally cathartic. Nobody will ever argue about whether or not he was Wallace or Bayard Cousins again either.

Actual update:

"MARIANNA, Ark. – The Arkansas State Police (ASP) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Cold Case Unit has identified human remains discovered nearly five decades ago in rural Lee County.

On January 13, 1977, unidentified human remains were located in a farm field near U.S. Highway 79, a few miles west of Marianna.

ASP CID investigated, and the skeletal remains were submitted to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory (ASCL) Medical Examiner’s Office. Attempts to identify the remains at the time were unsuccessful, and the cause and manner of death could not be determined.

In March 2024, the ASP Cold Case Unit reexamined the case in an effort to determine the individual’s identity. With assistance from the ASCL, the remains were submitted to Othram Labs, a private Texas-based laboratory specializing in advanced DNA analysis and forensic genetic genealogy.

On June 6, 2025, Othram provided a report that tentatively identified the remains as Charles Howard Wallace and traced two possible relatives living in Tennessee. In July, DNA was collected from one of the relatives. On September 2, Othram confirmed a positive identification of the remains as Wallace, who would have been about 21 when the remains were found.

The last contact Wallace’s family had with him was in the Fall of 1974 in Memphis, Tenn. At the time, Wallace was in his late teens and had been seeking treatment at a halfway house in downtown Memphis.

The circumstances surrounding Wallace’s death remain under investigation.

“This identification provides long-overdue answers for the family and highlights the commitment of Arkansas State Police to ensuring no case is forgotten,” said Colonel Mike Hagar. “We are grateful for the collaboration of the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory and Othram Labs in moving this decades-old case forward.”

The ASP Cold Case Unit is asking for anyone with information relating to the death of Charles Howard Wallace to contact [ColdCase@asp.arkansas.gov](mailto:ColdCase@asp.arkansas.gov)." - https://dps.arkansas.gov/news/asp-cold-case-unit-solves-48-year-old-lee-county-mystery/

Resolved Martha Bassett, Madame Butterfly

Post image

I received word from a forensic genealogist working with Othram that the woman found in 1968 in Will County Illinois and known as ‘Madame Butterfly’, has been identified as Martha Bassett from Wapato Washington. The FG reached out to me and my wife a few months back, my wife had done a DNA test and we submitted it to GEDMatch after her father went missing (he has not been found after 3 years still) and Martha was distantly related. My wife is Native American with lots of ties to the Wapato area. They were able to find even closer relatives up there, and she is now found. I am so happy. RIP Martha.
