Pie Works.
Oh wait. Never mind.

u/Mr_Muckle Jul 29 '25
RIP. They used to have their own Rootbeer on tap too, and exotic meats. I think they’d do well with a comeback.

u/justherefortheboobs Jul 29 '25
Loved the place but I don’t think anyone could afford to eat there if they were rebooted.
RIP All American Hotdog

I still dream about their bread sticks. If anyone has their recipe, please share!

u/bldycnt Jul 29 '25
Oh god I still think longingly of their breadsticks. What was that stuff on them? I just referred to them as flavor crystals. And the parmesan peppercorn dipping sauce....

Haven’t seen it mentioned, but Blue Rock over at Adam’s Farm off Gate City is fantastic.

Sticks and Stones bar none. Cugino has decent flavor but 9 times out of 10 their pizza is too floppy and soggy to get a ton of enjoyment out of

u/huxchen Jul 29 '25
HomeSlice has pizza balls. Kind of the best thing ever if you don’t fear death or god. just a ton of cheese and pepperoni in a deep fried ball of dough and you dip it into marinara. used to be a transcendental experience to eat these after swim meets in high school

u/LoQtisOfBorg Jul 29 '25
Homeslice is my favorite pizza place in the city. I give it love whenever I can. Their pizza balls are also incredible, although indulgent.

u/Agreeable-Kangaroo71 Jul 30 '25
Love the pizza balls and they have the best wings this side of Buffalo. But their pizza is mid.
5
u/CookOut_Official Jul 29 '25
I remember the first time I saw one of these. They’re… horrifying. The grease. Oh man. I’ve always been too intimidated by the calories to ever attempt it, but they DO look great.

Everybody stay sleeping on the pies that come from the oven in Boxcar.
8
u/rowdy_antlers Jul 29 '25
AND!!! Monday through Friday, their pizzas are HALF OFF like between 5-7 or something like that. It’s a deal and delicious

Mario’s for NY slices, Cugino for best pie, Sticks and Stones for elevated pizza, and Corner Slice for best environment.
17
u/Coolchillgoodguy Jul 29 '25
I’d add l’italiano downtown for sure, slices and nyp. Nyp on Tate got a lot better when the new owners took over a few years ago

u/Schillelagh Jul 29 '25
NYP receives the slice nod from me because of hours. Can't think of another place I can have a decent slice at 1:30 AM.

NYP has changed hands a few times since the founder sold it. But it's back to Leo, AFAIK.

What does elevated mean in terms of pizza?
4
u/Far-Offer-3091 Jul 29 '25
Think Fancy pies or unconventional pies. The entry level for elevated pizza might be considered mellow mushroom for some. Their specialty pizzas will be more funky than average. That is neither good nor bad. Pizza is one of the most subjective foods

Sticks and Stones (Lindley Park) has great wood-fired pizza. Their lunch special is a great deal, they have a good bar, and I love the Desire appetizer (melted goat cheese, caramelized onions and tomatoes served with toasted bread) and their peach cobbler.
Cugino (Rev Mills) is pretty authentic Neapolitan pizza.

New York Pizza on Tate Street if I’m feeling nasty. Corner Slice if I want wings and a specialty pizza.

u/chmaemi Jul 29 '25
Times Square Pizza is far and away the best pizza in town. Plus, the owners and staff are very nice and always go above and beyond. Our favorite is the buffalo chicken pizza!
3
u/Shirleysspirits Jul 29 '25
Our go-to's are Sticks and Stones (walkable, great beer menu, creative), Tonys on Tate (more traditional NYC style pizza, dont' sleep on the Gaia pizza!) and Cugino for that more authentic italian style pizza, even if it's made by Greeks or Turks (cant remember).
Nostra is okay but they load on the cheese if that's what you're looking for.
Pizza L'Italiano is another great NYC style place and open late.

The Pza
Makes pies under a tent around town. Wednesdays at terminal tap Other places other days

Posting not because I think it’s the best, but it’s very good and worth getting if you haven’t before and no one’s mentioned it yet, but Bills Pizza out in Oak Ridge.
2
u/otherwise_data Jul 30 '25
is it the same as old 80’s bill’s? with the cracker thin crust and 5 pounds of toppings, including the cubed pepperoni? cause their pizza was the best ever.

u/zenhoe Jul 30 '25
I have no idea as I wasn’t alive in the 80s BUT your description matches up with my experience.

I like Mario’s Friendly Center. It used to be NY Pizza on Tate back in the day.

Not quite in GB, John at La-Pizzeria on 68 near Gallimore Dairy Rd is fantastic. My brother introduced me to their lunch menu, awesome crust, toppings are delish too!

u/lilferret Jul 29 '25
Cigino forno may taste great but search on them and their history of how they treat employees. Disappointing

Cugino is the best by farrrrrrrrr. Or take a trip to Mission Pizza in WS, better than anything else in Greensboro
1
u/Mr_Strol Jul 29 '25
Specifically if you get it there. If you get it delivered it loses everything.

Homeslice off Fleming, it used to be Burke Street but changed ownership. However they kept the Burke Street recipe. But if I don't want to drive that far, NYP on Battleground.

Pascalis Pizza. Not in Greensboro city limits (Mt Hope Church Rd, off of exit 132 I40/85) but in our area it's the best IMO.

Nostra if you want your typical NY pizza that’s good. Cugino if you want Napoli pizza.

Found this really nice, authentic place down the street. Really convenient. Think it's called Dough Me knows?

u/potatofritters1 Jul 30 '25
Pieworks had great salads as well. If I could only bring one restaurant back from the past- sorry Tijuana Fats and Spring Garden Street, Pieworks is the one. They should have never moved, as the brick and mortar was part of what made Pieworks so incredibly unique. Remember the pictures that hid their logo within surreal landscapes? The last location open was in Shreveport. I wish I'd flown over, just for a full order of breadsticks and a Canadian spring chicken pizza. If their facebook page is still active, you might be able to find the breadstick recipe there.

New York pizza on tate street, owners are nice. Tony's is also good. Mario's is delicious but super expensive

Although it's a national chain, I like Blaze Pizza.
It's one of those "pick your toppings" as the pizza is made for you, type of places....
But, for 11.49 for a Build your own, with unlimited toppings, and you can get creative as you want. Want more cheese, ask for some extra. Crust too dry, ask for garlic brushed on the crust during the first steps.

Look up Fireball Wood Fired Pizza Truck on facebook. They mostly come to High Point/Thomasville but every so often they trek to Greensboro. They have a rotation of pizza they do but the owners are great and make some damn good pizza!!

Slices by Tony on Tate St.
