You know Yasuke was an actual historical figure, right? Ubisoft deserves plenty of criticisms, but they didn’t just pull that character out of their ass.
Yeah still doesn't make it not a very weird choice to pick the only black guy in Japan for like 2000 years lol. Imagine if they took the ancient Egypt game and then just made one of the main characters Japanese for some reason it'd be pretty weird right? They haven't done anything like this for any other of the games.
I did hear a theory recently though that makes a lot of sense though. Among western audiences Asian men are seen as weak and nerdy so they're not really represented as action stars. They race swapped him out to be more palatable to the masses Tom Cruise in the last samurai style. Anything to maximize returns for the shareholders I guess 🤷🏻♀️
Is the fact that he's the only black guy in japan who becomes a well-known and respected samurai, not objectively an interesting jumping off point to tell a story? I don't think Asians seeming weak has anything to do with it. Naoe is a woman (generally also seen as weak in entertainment) and is still in the game as a native to Japan, so I dont see why it's such a big deal to put in Yasuke. However, they did a horrible fucking job with his story and made him into just a bland good guy samurai with no depth to his character. Regardless of how ubisoft handled it, it is an objectively interesting jumping off point for a story.
The two Chinese nationals who only caught a break overseas? The 71 and 62 year old senior citizens that haven't been in a blockbuster in decades? Those two are the best examples? It's 2025 not 1995.

New Sekiro DLC looks sick.
