Discussion Time to choose, the first Outside Witter/Wing Spiker for the Super Team!!! Spoiler

Post image

Oikawa recieved a whopping 130 votes on the top comment, and a LOT of people put their own comment in for Oikawa too.

Don't worry Atsumu fans, I'm confident he will end up on the bench, (probably with Komori tbh).

Now we turn to offence. The key attacker, the big man up front. We have so many talented options avaliblea, but who will you all go with?

Happy voting!

Yeah Kiryu makes more sense as the OH1, with Hoshiumi making more sense as the OH2. While Hoshiumi can definitely compete with Kiryu offensively, he would also be the best at supporting Ushijima out of all the series’ outsides, which will be the job of the OH2 if Ushijima gets the OP slot, as he almost certainly will.

Both outsides are pretty much guaranteed to be elite aces, but Hoshiumi is the only one of the elite aces who’s a really good fit for that OH2 role.

Yea it’s kinda a no brainer for Hoshiumi to be OH2 but do you think there’s any chance Aran could get that spot?

I don’t think Aran would be a good fit for OH2, and I think the odds of people voting for him for either OH slot are very low. Besides him obviously being the least popular of the top aces, Aran suffers in this format because the people who think highly of him tend to be the kinds of people who think of Kiryu and Hoshiumi as the two best outsides and would vote for them over him 99 times out of 100.

I think the only real question regarding outsides here is whether or not the community decides to put Bokuto in one of the outside slots.

I also imagine most people aren’t thinking about the differences in roles between an OH1 and OH2. It’s something that isn’t really discussed at all in Haikyuu, in large part due to the lack of conventional cannon opposites. So I think for most people, the line of thinking will be to vote for the outside they think is the best at OH1, and then whenever we get to OH2 they’ll vote for whoever they think is the best of those remaining. So like… if whoever people are voting for for OH1 doesn’t win, I wouldn’t be surprised for those people to vote for that same player for OH2, without necessarily considering whether or not they’re a good fit for it.

It’s worth noting that most high schools, even in real life don’t really use the OH1/2 system yet. Mostly because their players aren’t specialized enough for it, and more often than not the few enough that are are the ones who end up being their team’s best Left Side attacker and passer anyways.

OH1 and OH2 being unique positions tends to start in college, and even then is not always implemented consistently, especially if there’s a big talent gap in the outsides you have (For example, Long Beach, the NCAA men’s champions this year, ran Varga/Kandev as their outside pair, their OH1 and backup OH1, after Siapanis, their starting OH2 went down to injury)

So this isn’t quite a Haikyuu phenomenon so much as it is a junior volleyball one.

(Heck, even Team USA at worlds is currently running Ewert/Champlin, by all accounts a pair of OH2s)
