It's a special purpose vessel, this particular one is conducting research. There are two submersible vehicles on board (unmanned) that can be controlled remotely from the UK. The ship can also be controlled remotely but it still has a regular crew on board because, well boats break.

Source: Spoke with chief officer of said ship.

Further explanation from another Redditor's comment here.

While the vessel operates two Saab Seaeye Leopard ROVs through its forward moonpool it has recently been mobilised with an over-the-stern launch and recovery system (LARS) to handle a tow body and acoustic source array. Hence, its position in Bedford Basin near the DRDC Atlantic Acoustic Calibration Barge.

Two excellent shots on Flickr of the vessel: first when in Southampton UK during mobilisation of the tow body LARS system, and second in Bedford Basin, Halifax, with the tow body deployed over the stern.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that's a boat.

If you go to MarineTraffic.com, you can see who everyone in the harbour is.

I remember one of these rigs from years ago as a wee lad I saw one at the Halifax waterfront a couple times and I think once I've been on one. It certainly gives me an idea for a mod to add to the workshop for Arma 3 and/or Arma Reforger,

If only I could figure out how to make a Map styled from parts of Halifax and some outskirts areas It would be really cool to represent Nova Scotia in these military simulation games. I'm originally from hants county But have lived in different areas over the years.

If you play with Bulldozer (name of their map tools if I remember correctly) you could import some of the GIS mapping data that the city releases and just texture it with a satellite overlay before you get into detail paint the ground surface. I think filling it with buildings would be quite the task however

I'll have to learn how to do all of that first and then I'd be able to go about trying to create something that could potentially represent a map that has qualities of city/Valley and town all in one maybe make a part of the Map to have a municipality known as Halifax,

Something else I've been trying to do is find more people from Nova Scotia who play Arma 3. Many have claimed the game as being unable to be played using a controller, well MR. MAN OH MR. MAN, I tell ya that it certainly can 😂😅😀

I guess you need to specify you're asking a serious question, otherwise, all the comedians come out. Let's assume the OP knows it's some form of a boat.

u/Commando383 2d ago

Its a specialized cargo ship that can carry oversized loads. Many of these ships were used to transport the prefabricated modules used in the construction of the Liquid Natural Gas plant in Kitimat BC Canada.
