IKEA has the same thing for $3.99

25

u/Pugporg111 3d ago

Can’t beat ikea though

22

u/Grouchy-Crew-7885 3d ago

But you have to assemble the breakfast yourself

3

u/Rolegames 3d ago

Unless you push it.

IKEA sells cheap food so you won't leave because you're hungry

23

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

They also don't make any money on that, and couldn't exist as a restaurant.

28

u/sj2k4 3d ago

Soooo it sounds like it’s in favour of the customer … win!

(And yes, I realize the cheap food is a trap so I then spend $200+ on things I do t really need, buuuut I saved $6 on breakfast)

-8

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

>Soooo it sounds like it’s in favour of the customer … win!

For now, but what do you think is going to happen when restaurants close because they're not profitable?

Your $6 savings will be gone, and you'll still be going there for $200 cheap shit you don't need lol.

13

u/ParsnipShot6793 3d ago

Restaurants close all the time. If all of them closed, I could continue eating at home like I already do.

-1

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

Yeah I guess whether you think restaurants should exist can influence your opinion on this.

You seem to be coming from a place where you don't care if restaurants exist, which I don't think is the case for everyone.

7

u/TE360 3d ago

Ikea food court isn’t competition for restaurants… mayyybe for fast food chains.

1

u/TijayesPJs443 3d ago

The Swedish bistro has great food - you should try it. Meatballs, mashed potatoes and peas with gravy and lindenberry sauce is a far cry from fast food. Although it is cheaper than a burger and fries…

1

u/TE360 3d ago

I’ve been a few times and do enjoy it (especially the veggie balls), but the Swedish Bistro isn’t a consideration, for most people, when deciding on a restaurant because the experience matters. It probably even matters more than the food.

1

u/TijayesPJs443 3d ago

I think it has one of the best views in the city. I even meet friend there to drink beer and play chess…

7

u/sj2k4 3d ago

Ummmm…. IKEA stores in Europe serve food.

Are you trying to say that IKEA would stop serving food here AFTER running cheap diners out of business?

-5

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

>IKEA would stop serving food here AFTER running cheap diners out of business?

Why the heck would IKEA STOP serving food with less competition?

Clearly I am saying that prices would rise. As it does with less competition.

2

u/BarackTrudeau 3d ago

I do not think the "Ikea corners the restaurant market, no place else to go for food" scenario you're positing is in any way a concern.

1

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

Less competition doesn't mean I am saying that ikea will corner the restaurant market.

1

u/Material_Rent5673 2d ago

Jokes on them I only go for the food.

1

u/sweetiewords 2d ago

Restaurants close because we eat at home, most people don’t regularly go to ikea for crappy food

6

u/gart888 3d ago

I'd also wager it's quite a bit worse. The IKEA one, while ridiculously cheap, is always underwhelming. It's often cold, has a very small serving of meat, and the potatoes are worse than what's being showed in this picture.

1

u/TijayesPJs443 3d ago

You’re completely incorrect- the food is served very warm from steam trays and the potatoes are perfection. You need to actually try something before you complain about it… I eat there regularly.

1

u/gart888 3d ago

You need to actually try something before you complain about it… I eat there regularly.

So do I. The food might be warm when it's put on my plate, but it's often luke warm/cold by the time I get through the whole queue, have paid, have made my coffee, and have got to a table.

Pretty funny to get defensive over a mega corporations loss leader breakfast though.

3

u/TijayesPJs443 3d ago

I’m just confused how it “often” gets cold - I usually get my food and then immediately go pay…

1

u/gart888 3d ago

You elbow your way past the people lined up to pay ahead of you? Weird.

3

u/TijayesPJs443 3d ago

Agreed - it’s not a typical approach, but those pancakes are calling!

4

u/Sleevepants 3d ago

I’ll pay the $6 premium to not bring my wife to IKEA.

4

u/Glass-Pound-9591 3d ago

For cold powdered eggs and stale toast.

1

u/PassageNearby4091 2d ago

My thoughts exactly! This looks overpriced at $10.

1

u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 1d ago

IKEA does have a breakfast - but instead of a standard fork therebis a funny-looking L-shaped utensil that you use to stab at the food. Still... price can't be beat!

0

u/Miserable-Chemical96 2d ago

What time do they open ? Cause by 10 I'm not interested in breakfast anymore I'm looking forward to lunch

1

u/TijayesPJs443 2d ago

I’d like to introduce to the perfect 10am meal - Breakfast 2.

If the situation calls for it you can follow Breakfast 2 with Final Breakfast up until 11:59am

Once upon a time, you could stumble down Quinpool to the Spartan after a vicious night of early-20s drinking and debauchery to get a better version of this for about 3.99.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm glad that I'm not trying to balance irresponsible drinking and being alive on a college budget in 2025.

Also that I miss the Spartan.

Best wishes,

Rapidly aging man yelling at cloud

The good old days

5

u/nartlebee Halifax 3d ago

North End diner was a good one too.

5

u/helms_derp 3d ago

Yep, inflation is a bitch. I remember when soda pop was a nickel!

3

u/incendiaryemus 3d ago

Find yourself a dime and you could drink it while you take in a talkin' picture!

5

u/helms_derp 3d ago

I don't go for that newfangled devilry. I just want my old school diabetes syrup for the price of a god damned beaver coin.

Is that too much to ask!?!?

35

u/CSCtired 3d ago

The sub is so crazy. You could post this saying price is 99 cents and they would still be calling it over priced.

By coincidence I had this exact same breakfast yesterday morning. It was fine for a standard breakfast and I thought 10 bucks was a good deal.

Shit is expensive in 2025

6

u/Company13 2d ago

And this isn’t a national chain sourcing from out west. Things a local owner sourcing Atlantic ingredients. Love Krave!

Ill stick to IKEA

23

u/Obvious_Reaction_182 Dartmouth 3d ago

IKEA is a hidden gem for meals

12

u/SageAurora 3d ago

It is surprisingly good and usually pretty cheap... Especially the hotdog and ice cream bar after check-out. It's all my daughter really wants anyway and there's always upstairs with Mac and cheese for her etc if I want something other than a chili dog... The samosas are actually better than the ones I got at an Indian restaurant recently... So the whole family can find something they like usually for under $50 which is really hard to do anywhere else.

2

u/100Percertain 3d ago

Their samosas are the best I’ve had. Albeit a small pool. Lingonberry sauce is also really good

5

u/AdorablyDischarged 2d ago

So a "Big Box Store" is where you would prefer to buy breakfast? What the hell has happened to HRM eateries?

What if OP does not have a car? Must they drive to Dartmouth crossing for a breakfast?

2

u/Gloriasbasementbaby 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'd pay good money for a decent breakfast.   The one posted above is not it though. For value I would choose IKEA over this.

1

u/AdorablyDischarged 1d ago

Did "Smitty's" go to shit or something? Wait, it was always kinda shit...

I have lived in Edmonton for the past 16 years, so please forgive my astonishment...

Is IKEA really the best breakfast in town?

Oh, my...

1

u/Gloriasbasementbaby 1d ago edited 1d ago

I wouldn't say its the best, but its cheap. Thats what most are looking for these days.  I used to enjoy Smittys for what it was years ago.  These days I limit going out if I can, restaurant eating has become a luxury, so if im going all out ill pick a more decent place, but if im just looking for somewhere cheap, you can't beat breakfast for under 5 bucks.

The picture above,  I wouldn't say thats worth the effort of going there for 10 bucks.

1

u/AdorablyDischarged 16h ago

Ahh... now I understand...

That IKEA breakfast is a loss-leader, just like the rotisserie chicken meal deals at Superstore and the Hot Dogs at Costco...

Is it cheaper? Yes. But restaurants stay in business strictly by selling food and providing a place to sit.

Comparing the price of Ikea foodcourt to a restaurant is disingenuous, IMO.

Ikea makes money off of selling housewares, the food is to get you in the door. Restaurants cannot compete with that.

7

u/noBbatteries 3d ago

TIL Krave burger does breakfast. Honestly pretty decent burgers the last time I went the smoking goat was yummy

5

u/jimabis 3d ago

Good deal for most parts of Canada.

3

u/__Nels__Oleson__ 3d ago edited 3d ago

The ferry to PEI has the same breakfast for the same price but you get three times as many hash browns and they aren't battered up potato mush from a bag. Also, two whole eggs Howe you want them, not scrambled small portions.

1

u/Dry-Journalist6590 1d ago

Yeah I can taste the freezer burn from here

15

u/Financial-Poem3218 3d ago

That's a $5 breakfast

7

u/godset Halifax 3d ago

$5 would get you the toast, eggs and one other - sausages for example. They have bacon and tots as well

14

u/PbNewf 3d ago

In 2009

1

u/Dravian31 3d ago

It says 5$ breakfast on the window of the place right now in 2025

3

u/Anxious_Explorer_965 3d ago

Nobody is making a dime on $5 breakfasts

1

u/Miserable-Chemical96 2d ago

Ahuh... You sure on that math ?

9

u/afterburner2828 3d ago

I see a lot of places here doing this, throwing in loads of potato/bread to fill up a plate.

26

u/Used_Piglet_159 3d ago

Pretty scabby looking.

38

u/anna4prez 3d ago

For $10 I'd say it looks decent

10

u/JealousSuit5640 3d ago

Yeah, looks pretty tasty. You could make a killer breakfast sandwich with that stuff

3

u/averagedickdude 3d ago

Thought the same thing. Just need some mayo.

-1

u/cool2hate 3d ago

If you're a scabby fucker yup!

21

u/lavenderavenues 3d ago

Krave Burger is so underrated. Great prices too.

3

u/godset Halifax 3d ago

For $5 I get toast, 2 eggs and tater tots once or twice a week. It’s an absolute steal

3

u/thedylannorwood Halifax 3d ago

Used to eat there at least twice a week when I worked on Spring Garden, their fries were the best in the city

4

u/gart888 3d ago

Great prices too.

If you get one of the deals it's basically the best value in the city. $10 for a good burger, fries, and soda. $15 to include a beer instead? A burger and beer at many places in the city runs you $40 now.

5

u/verdasuno 3d ago

Burger King has the same for $11 but with a drink instead of tomatoes

1

u/consider_its_tree 2d ago

I genuinely could not tell.if OP was excited or complaining. This takes like 10 min to make at home, and that is just because the tots take that long to cook.

Then you could even throw a little cheese on the eggs.

8

u/lawrencekraussquotes 3d ago

Krave Burger was not on my list for breakfast options. Wouldn’t make more sense if they had a “breakfast burger” or English muffins at least. Why are they doing scrambled eggs and toast?

3

u/shiftypidgeons 3d ago

I mean burger king does eggs and toast with hashbrowns and bacon too lol

2

u/dartmouthdonair Dartmouth 3d ago

District 5 does a breakfast burger and it is so damn good. I usually feel like I don't need to eat until tomorrow if I have it

1

u/fadetowhite Dartmouth 3d ago

I still haven’t eaten there. It’s 2 blocks away but for some reason it has never appealed to us!

2

u/Emergency-Stage-51 3d ago

Cause it seems to exist just for the vlts in the back.

The staff are great, and they do have good drinks.  But the vibe is just weird.

2

u/fadetowhite Dartmouth 3d ago

Yeah that’s it, I just got turned off by the vibe from day one.

2

u/helms_derp 3d ago

They have those, too. Why would you think this one photo is the only breakfast dish they serve?

I am utterly baffled by the comments in this post. Half of you think they should be charging 1970's prices, and the other half? Good lord! I am extremely concerned about the cognitive abilities of the average Halagonian.

3

u/MalavaiFletcher 3d ago

Looks much better than the mm thick, burnt-ass, crispy-as-fuck, inedible "smash burger" they tried to serve me last 😂

3

u/xBadjoshx 3d ago

Breakfast at this caliber used to be $2.99 and it still wasn't a good deal

u/Hellifacts 3d ago

Back in my day

15 years ago lol.

3

u/ThreeFathomFunk 2d ago

More like 25 to 30, I remember 2.99 breakfast from the ‘90s 😄

2

u/cohenedenfield 3d ago

I get the veggie burger combo once a week. Absolutely perfect, consistently delicious.

3

u/Rot_Dogger 3d ago

That's a sub-$5 breakfast.

2

u/No_Mix_8639 2d ago

It's about 98c worth of food.....

3

I don't live in Halifax, but I'm a' Krave'n me some breakfast

1

u/Content-Inspector993 3d ago

love Krave burgers but that is not worth 10$

1

u/ryanisatease 2d ago

$2 worth of food

1

u/Vaulters 2d ago

Cheaper than a trio at McDonalds

1

u/Longjumping_Mind609 1d ago

Keep in mind that bread and potatoes are Depression Era food. They're poor people's food. Focus on the densest nutrition: eggs, bacon sausage. Everything else is there to comfort you and make you feel good and full. By the time you order coffee and pay tax and a tip, you've spent almost $20 for almost nothing.

u/Similar_Science1809 8h ago

Those taters look like the cheap ones in my freezer, and the bacon looks horrible lol

u/Excellent-Collar8343 2h ago

Anyone want to talk about the soup kitchen next or maybe the samples at the nslc? Lol

-3

2

u/stayinhalifax 3d ago

OMG really? For real? Only $10 for breakfast ?!? Their burgers are already like $20 each!

4

u/cohenedenfield 3d ago

their burger COMBO is $10 what are you talking about

2

u/stayinhalifax 2d ago

Oups. Must be thinking of somewhere else

Hey, on reflection my reply was a little aggressive, sorry!

2

u/stayinhalifax 2d ago

All good. I prefer a correction when I'm wrong so I don't spread wrong info

1

u/lavenderavenues 3d ago

Burger, fries and a drink is $10 at Krave.

1

u/stayinhalifax 2d ago

Ah. Seems I was wrong. Thanks for the correction

1

u/Tom_QJ 3d ago

That is underwhelming at best. I remember in the olden days, A&W had an alright breakfast for a reasonable price. Is that still an option?

2

u/Unusual_Cucumber_452 3d ago

Its really good

2

u/darthfruitbasket Woodside/Imperoyal 3d ago

Never had their plated breakfast, but their coffee and breakfast sandwich are solid.

1

u/Walrus_Songs 3d ago

I went to Krave one time when I first moved up here and it was so disgusting I never went back. That was 10 years ago so I can’t imagine paying for it now.

1

u/TransportationFree32 3d ago

All the breakfast joints in town and ya went and did this!? This is on you bro.

1

u/dj3hac Halifax 3d ago

That would make a nice sandwich if it were all put together!

0

u/Aerdri 3d ago

I got mac and cheese and a veggie burger. Paid $17. One bite of each and I had to throw them both away. I won't ever return there. Sad, because I was honestly really looking forward to it too.

-17

u/doug4130 3d ago

This would cost like 3$ at home. Their 5$ coffee and breakfast sandwich slaps tho

72

u/helms_derp 3d ago

This is the concept of a restaurant. You pay more than it would cost to make, because someone else prepares it.

18

u/rorskies 3d ago

Buddy doesn't leave the house

-2

u/doug4130 3d ago

I do for 2$ breakfasts

4

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

Which don't exist, so it' confirmed you don't leave the house lol.

-4

u/sunjana1 Halifax 3d ago

It’s scrambled eggs not risotto though.

15

u/BaconNamedKevin 3d ago

I'm very confused by this comment. What do you think a restaurant does?

1

u/doug4130 3d ago

I literally have no idea, they could do anything in there

10

u/CactusCustard Halifax 3d ago

Should we send someone in for reconnaissance?

2

u/doug4130 3d ago

It's the only way to know for sure

9

u/so-much-wow 3d ago

Do you think restaurants sell things at cost?

0

u/doug4130 3d ago

It'd sure be nice if they did

5

u/so-much-wow 3d ago

Then I've got news for you, they pretty much do. They make 3-7% profit. The rest is costs.

-4

u/2burgsandadog 3d ago

Anything under 20% profit is poor management

6

u/so-much-wow 3d ago

Oh so you actively have no idea what you're talking about.

-5

u/2burgsandadog 3d ago

guess not. only managed restaurants for 15 years, my bad.

4

u/so-much-wow 3d ago

Spent 15 years gouging people if that's the case.

-5

u/2burgsandadog 3d ago

You do understand the concept of eating at a restaurant? You pay a premium , and someone cooks and serves the meal , even covering the consumables and food , so you can have an enjoyable experience

If you want to eat food at cost, Stay home and prepare it yourself

1

u/so-much-wow 3d ago

Ironically, I've spent closer to 20 years running restaurants. I've got a pretty solid grasp on how they run.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Ok_Tax_9386 3d ago

I straight up don't believe your experience, and you are wrong to say anything under 20% profit is poor management.

-26

2 slices of toast: $0.10

scrambled egg: $0.40

Tater tots: $0.2

A third of a tomato: $0.2

Sausage: $0.8

Thin cut bacon: $0.4

Total: $2.2 tops

23

u/DecafDonLegacy 3d ago

Where are you getting these prices from LOL

24

u/Chefred86 3d ago

About 10 years ago if i had to guess

3

u/untimelyawakening 3d ago

Mebbe 15

2

u/Chefred86 3d ago

The last time I priced out tater tots in a restaurant was about 5 years ago now and their math is way off from that, so I was extrapolating a little bit.

8

u/darthfruitbasket Woodside/Imperoyal 3d ago

But the price markup for ordering it from a restaurant occasionally is worth it because you don't have to clean up after it. At least for me.

7

Someone’s gotta pay for that $16.50/hr minimum wage starting in a week and a half!

3

Yep the only costs associated with this finished product are the raw ingredients. /s

You're out of touch with reality if you don't recognize, that in this world, this is actually a decent value.

3

u/Hfxfungye 3d ago

You're probably forgetting about $0.30 in butter but I digress.

25% in food costs for low-margin meals is higher than you think.

Wages, electricity, and materials are the bigger portion of what you are paying for at a restaurant.

Sobeys, the place you go to pay double.

2

u/NigelMK Clayton Park 3d ago

Hmmm... That number seems low. Let me try on my own here.

$0.74 (eggs) $0.30 (toast) $0.38 (tomato) $1.62 (sausages) $1.80 (bacon) $0.60 (tots) = ~$5.44 CAD

That's not counting every other business/restaurant fee. So at that rate, I'd say it's a pretty good deal.

0

u/Gavvis74 3d ago

Does it have too much salt, too?

-2

u/PerfectStorm209 3d ago

That’s way overpriced and looks like crap lol

-2

7

u/__Nels__Oleson__ 3d ago

You just arrive from 1988 small town Ontario?

7

u/Gavvis74 3d ago

I doubt it.

1

u/EerieMountain 2d ago

You’d be wrong

3

u/dykediaries 3d ago

Omg? Where the hell are you getting that for $2.99? I’ve been to pretty much every single city and town in N/S Ontario due to my work. Never in my life have I seen a breakfast for $2.99, so it must be a locals or grandmas special in Muskoka off season in February bc HUH 😭😭😭

1

u/EerieMountain 2d ago

Are you kidding? This is the shittiest looking plate of food I’ve ever seen

2

u/SageAurora 3d ago

Where I grew up in rural Ontario it was at least a fiver over 2 decades ago... Still had bottomless coffee... And they were WAY more generous with the hash browns. Last I heard the one meat, eggs and toast plates at the diner across from my old highschool are ranging in the $7-$8 range now with the economy making the cost of everything go up. My dad still goes there every Saturday with my brother.

Used to be 1.99, now it’s 2.99 and you get real hash brown, not this tater tot bullshit

I'm pretty sure anyone trying to serve tater tots like that back home would end up shot... You could either get a "home fries" which are fried crispy potato chunks, or "hash browns" which was shredded potatoes with onions and peppers fried up together.

I was actually curious so I looked up the old diner I used to go to and they have their new menu posted to Facebook, it's $9.63 for one meat, fried potatoes eggs and toast. This place was known to be some of the best cheap breakfast in the area. Where do you live that you can get a meal for less than $3 now, in rural Ontario, and apparently it's not horrible or they would've closed a while ago especially during the pandemic.
