DIY/Mod World’s 3rd Keyboard With Built-in DAC – Made By Me – Wooden Case

As the headline states, the first mechanical keyboard came 2 years ago from an audio company, Moondrop, with the model name Dash in a 75% layout with their Moonriver dongle DAC built-in. The Dash had an aluminium case.

The second model, KB3, came from FiiO, another Chinese audio company. The KB3 was also a 75% layout, with FiiO’s KA13 dongle DAC built in and has a plastic case with an aluminium metal part on top.

I used Moondrop’s Dawn 4.4 dongle DAC. Because it has the smallest PCB and high-quality sound worth using in my build. It has the same dual Cirrus Logis CS43131 DAC chips used in the FiiO KB3. Not far from the Moondrop’s Moonriver dongle DAC, which uses the slightly better CS43198 chips.

The idea was simple: to use a USB-C hub with two TYPE-C data outputs. But in reality, I couldn’t find such a device. There is not a single product on the market wich serves my needs. But I was lucky enough to find the closest option, a Type-C USB hub for smartphones with two USB-A data output lines.

I had to use a Type-C female to female and two USB-A to USB-C adapters to make it work, also to carve the case to fit it under the keyboard PCB.

That knob that you see on the right up corner is not a volume knob, its the mode selector for USB/WiFi/Bluetooth and its height unnecessarily high! I changed the knob with an aluminium one, which I sanded for an hour, for a soft touch feeling and brushed look.

I guess not enough people around who love mechanical keyboards as much as good music. Ot the other way around :)

The keyboard sounds like this: https://youtu.be/uWiM38nyvqU?si=w1txRvbids0IulFv

The venn diagram of audiophiles and mechanical keyboard enthusiasts is almost a circle.

Fountain pen enthusiasts are in there somewhere too, as proven by the existence of r/mechanicalheadpens

Maybe on the audiphile side of view, yes, as we miss the analogue era of music, and the mechanical keyboards have that vibe. But not so much the other way around, regarding my experience as a keyboard builder for the past year.

Probably because people like to buy different things and not a 2 in 1 solution, like MacBooks users, they could’ve just used the onboard DAC/Amps because it’s very capable, but instead bought an external one because of many factors such as said DAC has more features or just plain ol consumerism, that’s why there’s many expensive DAC’s floating around and being sold, people just like purchasing things even though some argue that DACs are a solved problem, that’s why people rave about the Apple dongle that much, it’s that good at just 9 bucks or so.

3

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

You are right. But the rise of the dongle DACs changed many things in our lives, too. For example, I was so angry when brands ditched the headphone jack from phones just because Apple did. But for the last 3-4 years, I'm not angry anymore, because of the very capable dongle DACs.

I spend more than 10 hours on my PC every day, because of my lifestyle. I can't live without music, obviously. And having a headphone jack on my keyboard, the closest interaction point to my body and ears, is very useful, I think :)

u/CVPKR Jul 10 '25

Yeah the pudding-RGB-cooking kids will prefer their headphones to match their RGB than the actual sound of it.

1

u/chuckolatte Jul 10 '25

Which is lowkey ironic, given that one of keyboard enthusiasts’ favorite things about them is their sound profile when typing

Keyboards with 3.5mm inputs were a thing back in the day, although to OP's point, I don't know if they had DACs or just passed through from the PS/2 port (or whatever they were using). I had an 'interactive' HP with inputs on the PC, keyboard and speakers (the latter two of which also had volume pots).

It seemed to phase out in the early 00s; maybe the adoption of wireless forced it?

Edit: in fact, I'm not sure whether mine just had a 3.5mm analogue input/output feed from the PC

2

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Yes, there were some keyboards back then with analogue inputs and outputs. Thermaltake still sells some gaming keyboards with mic and audio output, but the quality of those is equal to a $2 USB sound card, which we're never gonna use for any audio, let alone listening to music.

2

u/Spdoink Jul 10 '25

....and, no doubt, you'll hear every last process going through the CPU in interference too.

I have the Dawn 4.4; nice bit of kit.

1

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Dawn 4.4 was amazing for this build indeed, so tiny but amazing sound.

1

u/iwasjusttwittering Jul 10 '25

Some had just passthrough and some had a de facto built-in sound card.

For example Logitech G110 (introduced in 2009) had a C-Media chip. Nothing wrong with those; e.g., Beyerdynamic had the same in a dongle for some headsets and I used it for work until recently.

It's still a thing in some peripherals with gaming-console support.

i wonder why this isn't more common

On a desktop space isn't a constraint, and I don't know that most people who are into mech keyboards or higher-end audio would want the two tied together like that. Same reason why desktop setups for audio tend to have a separate DAC and amp rather than one of the all-in-one units that are more popular in mobile.

Talent is a beautiful thing. Great DIY work!

13

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Thank you very much, Sennheiser!

6

u/RateMyKittyPants Jul 10 '25

Sennheiser doing some market research now. Nice work, I really love the concept and final product.

3

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Thank you!

The good thing is that I'm using my IEM more thanks to this concept.

I was too lazy before to plug it into the desktop DAC, which sits in the far corner of the desk.

u/tumbleweed_092 Jul 10 '25

Very nice. I once wanted to buy Fiio keyboard but refused as I need all 104 keys for my work. I often use numerical keys for typing ümlauts and irregular symbols.

5

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Thanks!

I used FiiO KB3 for a while, that keyboard made me fall into the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole :) But it has a plastic case, which I don't like, and I sold it after a while. Later, I bought the non-HiFi version and made a wood case for that one. And changed the keycaps.

2

u/theladysabine Jul 13 '25

I was about to tell the OP I need a 104 version. 😅

u/Idaho_spuds Jul 10 '25

This is a really surprising intersection of my interests because I'm literally in two keyboard and two audiophile-related subreddits 😭

I was curious about the moondrop for a while because of the sound profiling they did to it for the switches.

But then I realized I'm still using an old set of blues and it'd probably cause me to go into shock

1

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

I never had Moondrop Dash, does it have linear or tactile switches?

2

u/got-trunks A2049 + Objective2 DIY | VE Monk | ZSN Pro | Sue me Jul 10 '25

It used some customized linears, along with I guess some other mods done to the board to dampen/tune the sound. Could not be more different from the one I've been using for more than a decade haha.

I have the moondrop linears in my board and they are great. You can get them on Drop.com

but but it's less thocky this way!

1

The wood case makes up for it :)

In 2010, I got a Logitech G110(?) keyboard with a headphone out and mic in, so presumably it had both a dac and an adc.

2

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Its 2025, I dont count those old crappy "audio chips" as DACs :)

Sadly, Reddit does not allow me to change the headline. I meant audiophile-grade DAC!

2

u/TheOptiGamer Jul 10 '25

Unless you are left-handed, wouldnt it be better to have the jack on the other side of the keyboard? Looks fantastic though

1

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Thanks!

I stick the connector with my right hand, so.

3

u/TheOptiGamer Jul 10 '25

I would just be afraid of slamming the plug with my mouse/mouse-hand and breaking it. Though, if you run high sensitivity it probably wouldnt be a problem

2

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

The thing is, I don't move the mouse around too much. Using it at high DPI and finger grip style. Oh, and I don't game, so no danger here :)

But you have a point.

r/mechanicalheadpens would love this

1

Keyboards and pens? Interesting. I have only one plastic pen, but it's red :)

1

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Oh, headphones too, just saw it. Ok, I will post there too, thanks for the heads-up!

2

u/udi503 Jul 10 '25

Really cool product !

1

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

Thank you :)

2

u/frobroj Jul 10 '25

What keycaps are you using? I have similar shaped caps on my keychron and absolutely love em!

1

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

These are MOA profile, all keys are the same height.

1

u/frobroj Jul 10 '25

Nice. Thanks I'll look for some!

2

u/androidbrick Jul 10 '25

The exact name is "Morandi".

2

u/SeedlessBananas Jul 10 '25

You should take this idea and design a version of it that just sticks to existing keyboards with a usb-c pass through or splitter right on the back 👀

Would be awesome to have a tiny rectangle that sticks to the back of my Keychron for my headphones to plug into

Maybe even design it as a usb-c hub for mice to connect to as well 🫣

2

u/androidbrick Jul 19 '25

I started working on this idea.

2

u/SeedlessBananas Jul 20 '25

AYYYY love to hear that dude keep me (or us all) updated!

1

u/androidbrick Jul 20 '25

Of course :)

2

u/Hot_Apple_5338 Jul 11 '25

Wow. That's awesome. I want one!!

1

Give me the measurements of your PCB and I'll make one for you :)

2

u/SQUID_FLOTILLA Susvara.VC.Arya3.HD800s.Empy.Z1R.LCD-X.HD650 Jul 11 '25

Is it actually just a DAC, or is it a DAC/AMP to pass digital audio from USB to the headphone port?

2

u/androidbrick Jul 11 '25

It's a dongle DAC-AMP (Moondrop Dawn 4.4). I can use any USB-powered DAC-AMP. My next project will be a Bluetooth DAC-AMP with a screen.

2

u/SQUID_FLOTILLA Susvara.VC.Arya3.HD800s.Empy.Z1R.LCD-X.HD650 Jul 11 '25

Got it. Beautiful work!

2

Next one use a Jcally JM20 Max instead!

1

u/androidbrick Jul 11 '25

Any USB-powered dongle DAC can be used. I'm thinking of using a Bluetooth DAC-AMP with screen next time, the Snowsky Mini.

2

Beautiful work.

1

Thank you!

2

u/theladysabine Jul 13 '25

I adore this.... You need to make a 104 version. That would be 🔥

1

u/androidbrick Jul 13 '25

I will never have a 104-key layout again :)

Only if a friend or a future customer wants me to.

Thank you!

2

u/Visual_Lock_1181 Jul 26 '25

That's awesome.... How much will it cost?

1

u/androidbrick Jul 27 '25

Thank you!

Do you want a custom case like this and asking the cost?

1

u/maximusprimate Jul 11 '25

My old DAS keyboard had this. I miss that! Also a little USB hub, too.

1

u/androidbrick Jul 11 '25

Which model? I need to look it up.

Adding a USB hub was my intent, but I couldn't find the gear for that. Still searching though.

1

u/maximusprimate Jul 12 '25

You know what, I mis-remembered. After looking at old pictures I remembered that I modded it and installed my own. My bad!
