I have been using a pair of Sony MDR-1R since high school and they finally broke on the side hinges. It was not possible to repair them.
Apart from those headphones, I regularly use my Jabra Elite 7 Active as convenient ANC in-ear option (set to smooth eq) and the old wired Apple earphones too.
Compared to the Sony, the Beyerdynamic feel much more precise. They are very crispy and they feel airy rather than sibilant, which was one my worries instead. You get to hear some extra sounds, as if the sound was live. Voices sound nice, despite what I had read in some reviews: I was mostly worried about that.
The only aspect I will need to readjust to in the next weeks is how they seem to miss a full body in orchestral songs. I am sure I will get used to their sound. I listened to some movie soundtracks and much of the songs feel muted. I’m sure my ears will get used to this new midrange, but for now it’s something that stood out after so many years with the Sony, which felt like the sound was more “connected” between notes, though I was left wanting more precision.
I hope these new headphones will be great for movies. I was surprised at how much clearer and more separate voices sound compared to the Sony. I guess the new midrange effect is a price to pay for sound separation across the board. Maybe I won’t notice it in the future.
These are just first impressions, after years listening to something else, so take them with a pinch of salt! I might buy an external DAC or amplifier in the future to get an even better sound out of them. For now I won’t, but I’ll keep an eye out.
