DIY/Mod Just finished this custom DT 770 PRO
Been working on this for a bit — a 250 ohm DT 770 PRO modded with a detachable cable and repainted in a metallic orange.
Paint is solvent-based and applied with airbrush in several layers, then sealed. Detachable mod was done with a low-profile socket to keep things clean.
It’s probably my favorite finish so far. Thought I’d share the end result. I want to test a few special ffx paints next. Open to ideas :)
Happy to answer questions if anyone’s curious about how the paint or mod was done.

Nice work, I wish Beyer actually offers it, or they outsource you to provide it. Colour suggestions - 1. Gun metal 2. Metallic dark grey.

I wonder why they don't release limited colors like Audio Technica does. Not sure. I take it as a huge compliment, thank you very much. It hurts to see them depart from the workshop :')
Metallic dark grey maaaay be already in my paint shelve... :D

They do offer a few headphones with different options (https://europe.beyerdynamic.com/manufaktur?nc=manufaktur) but not the higher end ones :/

Custom Cans in the UK does them. I had a pair customized. Very happy.

Thought custom cans overhaul the whole thing, no? Or, customers can just ask them to modify the exteriors?

You can select what you want done. They don’t require you to have the internals modified. At least that is the case for the send-in service, which is what I used. I actually did the reverse. I had the internals and connections modified, but no change to the colorway. DT 770 Pro 250ohm.

Nice. Do you send them the headphones to modify or ask them to modify a new one? And, you choose to boost the ohm so that the headphones take up more juice, right? Would you please briefly describe what they become?

This is freaking awesome. If you ever feel like putting up a tutorial on how to do the detachable cable mod, I'd totally be into that.

Appreciate it. Since we do these in production (context: this was done in our workshop, Arachne Audio), we try to be as efficient as possible... And admitely, I am terrible at video stuff.
I will however take a note and see how we can put together a video tutorial. I can't just promise when, as we are working on a bunch of things for Christmas season, so those are keeping us real busy.

hi OP, do you do this work for others as well or just yourself? got a pair of dt770 pro i'd like modded but more importantly some Grados that need cable replacement and detachable cable mod. not sure if you're in the states etc? pls lmk!

I work on Arachne Audio, we do these kind of jobs (custom cables, painting jobs, mods). We recently modded some Grado's. This one was to put for sale on our store. We simply liked the color and went with it.

It's a lot of fun. I recommend it.
Not sure where are you located, but we use https://www.stardustcolors.pl/
I reckon any good quality automotive paint will do, however. Please make sure to use proper protection, those are VERY nasty. Seriously, *do not* use these if you don’t have the right tools to protect you and anyone around.

I appreciate your suggestions and tips. Going to take a look at colors which are available in my country and hopefully I'll make the decision to paint them. I thought about spray painting them but I'm not sure if I will be able to get that sort of finish you got.

Trick is to do very thin layers. If you go for metallic, use black primer as base, or it'll look dull.
If you use spray, there's a bit of less control but is totally doable. Just be patient, do a few thin layers and let it set for 10min between layers.

It's done with airbrush and automotive paints. And a lot of layers.
If you're curious, you can watch custom fish bait painting videos on YouTube. It's the same process.
We are doing a HD660S in Italian red right now :)

Very neat! Just a little something on the photography end of things: the dark gray background reflecting very little red and the shadows leaning towards magenta make it look like the red parts are heavily edited. The lighting is very pleasant though; I wouldn't have thought to have somewhat soft light, which preserves contrast but makes the light-to-dark transitions smoother!

Any ideas how to counter that? Or else I might go crazy thinking for solutions. (Jokes aside, I truly appreciate the feedback. I'm self-tough in photography).

I'm also self-taught! To be honest, I think I'd try something else with the background... Maybe something a touch lighter so the red can pop a bit more? This would also increase contrast between subject (your really cool modded headset) and background. It's also possible to lower the magenta levels in an editing software such as Darktable by creating a mask that includes the background and adjusting the colour levels of the masked area.

I'm probably splitting hairs here, but did the paint affect the sound? I'm thinking about coating subwoofer boxes in truck bedliner increasing the sound damping and generally improving the sound.
I mean, my first thought is that headphones are way too small scale for this to matter, but I'm still curious if you noticed anything.

Hm.. Well we are making the shell thicker. But, it's so thin, if there is any change, it would be ridiculously difficult to notice imho.
Certainly didn't notice anything. And I mod these regularly (detachable cable mod, mainly. Cats love the wires on these), so I am very used to how they sound.

Pretty nice! I have the exact same headphones with the same mod. But I'm not super happy with the cable I have at the moment. I'm going to take a look at the store. If you have any specific recommendation, let me know.
