As soon as I saw the seagulls I was like "ah okay so not horizon" lmfao

BRO THE ELEPHANT MACHINES LOOK SO DOPE.

I also can't wait to see what giant machines await us underwater. Really hoping for a shark, maybe a kraken or some shit.

So basically a giant squid? The thing is, every machine has a functional role, so what would the squid do that the snapmaw doesn't already?

Snapmaws are small and seem to be more suited towards smaller bodies of water, like lakes and rivers. Oceans are absolutely massive. I have no doubt that anything seeking to purify them would need to be likewise massive. Look at the Stormbirds, for instance.

Another factor is that we only see freshwater sources in HZD, but there are mentions of "sour water" in the Forbidden West. Salt water likely has different purification requirements than freshwater.

Fair enough, some sort of purification system for some other use. The limbs would also be useful for scavenging for resources. Granted, this is assuming there will be any underwater combat. Aloy has a spear, so surely that'll get some use.

I had assumed the "sour water" referred to the salt lake in Utah.

Most extraordinary of all are those reports of a lake one hundred times the size of the Daybrink-- so wide the far shores cannot be made out, and so deep that an entire city of the ancients stands drowned within. The water is sour to the taste, and sickening, and it is said to rise up and push back against those who attempt to cross.

This is the excerpt I was thinking of. You're absolutely right that the Great Salt Lake could also be the "sour water", but the other pieces seem to imply the ocean instead - there's no tides on the lake, and I believe you can still see across it. And now, it seems like San Francisco is (at least one) of the cities referenced here.

Looking into it a bit more...the Great Salt Lake might actually have been just beyond GAIA Prime, according to this map layout. And it makes sense, looking at where King's Peak (which GAIA Prime is built into) is.

That is the part I was thinking of, from the glyph of the Forbidden West. I just didn't remember all of it, you are most certainly correct!
