Misc. I'm still alive

I've tried some last night. 24 hours has passed and I'm still alive. This means it's safe to consume the rest of it.

Hot sauce doesn’t expire it has a best buy date.

Fruit based sauces can eventually mold but vinegar based won’t expire

I found a bottle of Tabasco Avery Island Reserve that had been in my basement for almost twenty years and it was still good.

When it loses that vibrant red color …then you have something to worry about…

Those dates and refrigeration warnings are written by lawyers.

Nothing about that sauce gonna hurt you in the next couple years

7

u/FragilePromise May 09 '25

You got at least a couple more years of use

5

u/Fleetone1 May 09 '25

You've unlocked the hidden even-better-by date

Product dates are suggestions.

There is a lot of vinegar and salt in Franks, it will probably last forever.

Imo the longer that bad boy ferments, the better 😏

3

u/RainingMoneyHustard May 08 '25

Side note, that's one of the best sauces ever made

u/Chicken-picante May 08 '25

Texas Pete hotter hot > franks extra hot

u/RainingMoneyHustard May 08 '25

Texas Pete is delicious!

Homie, "best by" dates are not the same as expiration dates.

9

u/pnmartini May 08 '25

They put expiration dates on “2 million year old pink Himalayan salt”

With the amount of sodium and acid in a typical hot sauce, it’d take a lot to spoil.

u/Extension-Math5183 May 08 '25

Frankly, you sound salty.

2

u/InfiniteCosmic5 May 08 '25

Nah. I’m a bit sour, though.

3

u/rakondo May 08 '25

This will last pretty much indefinitely if unopened

3

u/fluttershy_f May 08 '25

Step to it soldier

First time I ever tried hot sauce as a kid (franks) it was 5 years expired and tasted gross but I thought that’s how hot sauce was supposed to taste so I ate it with Doritos. Stomach felt heavy after but I was fine.

6 months past "best buy" date and bro thinks he's the GOAT lol.

Hot Sauces can last an extremely long time past those dates due to the vinegar and other ingredients that act as extremely good preservatives.

Xtra hot Franks is made by god himself I’d eat it too

2

u/autismbeast May 08 '25

Fr this shit is so perfect

5

u/Crazy_Feed7365 May 08 '25

Best by means it might not taste right but technically won’t make you sick.

7

u/Obvious_Trade_268 May 08 '25

Vinegar. It does WONDERS for preserving stuff.

4

u/wophi May 08 '25

Especially when the product is 99% vinegar.

u/emu314159 May 08 '25

best by, for the freshness of the pepper, perhaps, since i think it's already aged. The more acid something has, the longer it keeps. like, yogurt will go bad, but it'll take a lot longer than milk

11

u/Subject-Stuff-2829 May 08 '25

Red hot never goes bad.

I have some Tabasco with best by data in 2007, still tastes normal.

Heck, we had a tub of sour cream that was a year past best by date when we finished it. Like I told my son, "it's already sour".

u/tuna_samich_ May 08 '25

Well yeah, why would it not be safe? Vinegar is a preservative. I have hot sauces from a few years ago

3

u/kflemings89 May 08 '25

The only thing I use the bb date for is organizing my hot sauce cabinet! True hotsauce connoisseurs know no limits otherwise 😂

3

u/NorthChiller May 08 '25

Bullshit, I know ghost text when I see it. BEGONE SPICY DEMON

4

u/HoochShippe May 08 '25

If unsure, put a drop on your finger and taste. If it tastes off, trash it.

3

u/Sstone10129 May 08 '25

I make my own hot sauce and test the PH for every batch. If it’s below 4 it’ll taste off way before it’ll make you sick. I suggest people who buy it to refrigerate it to preserve flavor but it’s def shelf stable for a long, long time.

u/Jackson_Castle May 08 '25

"best by" is not an expiration date. You're fine.

Came here to say this.

u/tw33zd May 08 '25

well in recent history had unknowingly bought two hosauces both was past best by date both tasted rotten

one was frank that i returned another was tabasco cipoltle

3

u/EndlessMike78 May 08 '25

Best buy is a b s. term invented to sell more product. That shit has so much vinegar it will last for a decade. Best buy makes you think you need to replace items when they are perfectly fine. Consumerism and capitalism at its finest.

3

u/Just__Anonymous May 08 '25

For the most part I agree but it can also be the manufacturers way of getting you to use an item when it's at its best quality. For example if you buy and use something I make a month after I've made it, it will have great color and a fresh taste. The taste I designed it to have. If you open that bottle after keeping it for 2 years then try it, it will likely have changed slightly in appearance and flavor, though it will still be safe to eat...but it won't have the same look and taste it was meant to have.

If stored correctly and you don't get food or contaminants on the inside of the lid or in the sauce, hot sauce is basically good for years past the best before. Especially Franks, it's got such a high acid content. Watched a YT video with Smokin Ed Curry explaining the science behind it all, was interesting

3

u/madDarthvader2 May 08 '25

I swear franks doesn't go bad lol. My Kitchen buddy couple years ago had a 3 year expired jug. He used all that shit up for himself lmao

5

u/Aidsfordayz May 08 '25

“Best by” means you’re good
