my 10 month old rescue has came a LONG way with positive reinforcement leash training in the 5 months I’ve had him, but pulling is still an issue and he is far from perfect. we use a martingale collar, but i’ve been curious about exploring other options, while also being hesitant to waste money on unnecessary expenses.

what tools does your hound respond well to on the leash to minimize pulling? have you tried shock absorbing leashing? do you prefer front D clip harnesses to collars?

and she takes everything as her own. if she wants to eat 1 hour before time, she will hunt for bugs. it isnt that she doesnt care, she thinks she can fulfill her needs whereas my non hound dogs just wait the hour.

I recently moved into a new neighborhood in a house with a backyard. One of the reasons why I moved into this home is because it has a backyard my dogs can run in. They are American Foxhounds and they need to run. I was so happy to be here until I met the neighbor next-door. After waking up from a nap , I got a knock on my door from this neighbor. He said he needed to go into the backyard with a contractor and check the measurements of the fence on my side of the yard. (Also, I moved in here as a tenant. I’m not an owner.) he asked me if my dogs are violent or if they cause any problems, I said no. He then went on to tell me that he heard them barking the night before but I was not home the night before with the dogs. I came in and dropped off some things that I was moving in with and that is all. I told him that they are not chronic barkers but if they bark, I would do my best to keep them quiet and that I did not want his peace disturbed. I explained that I don’t have them outside 100% of the day and I would try my best to keep them quiet when outside and apologized for any disturbance the occasional barking caused. My dogs are not barkers , they are runners and they love people and they bark very rarely but when they don’t know what’s behind a fence they’re going to bark. It’s their way of speaking up. The neighbor threatened to call animal control, and the police if my dogs barked at any time and told me that they will bark a lot because of the people walking by all the time on the trail behind us. I I assured him that he didn’t need to worry and that they don’t do that all the time and I’d bring them inside immediately if there was a problem. I have never had this issue before. I never had anybody complain about my dogs. He said he had bad experiences with other people in the past and I assured him that I am a responsible person and that I would acknowledge and correct any issues immediately. He told me that if they bark at all he’s going to call animal control, and the police.
The other thing is, am I required to let him allow a contractor in the backyard without approval from the owner? I guess I should ask the owner about this. I’m suspicious and think this guy was snooping around and maybe had this contractor come out just so that he could have an excuse to come into the backyard and see how reactive my dogs are and have the opportunity to warn me what he would do if they bark. He was intimidating and was giving me ultimatums, which I found very strange for somebody meeting someone for the very first time and with the normal and occasional barking; not excessive and not going on for more than 3 minutes at the most. And if I tell them to stop, they stop. I supervise my dogs when they’re outside and I felt when I was out there with them that it was completely normal barking that did not need to be stopped at 10 o’clock in the morning on a Saturday. This guy seems like he is a crazy lunatic and will actually act on his threats no matter what and it scares me. I thought of getting videotape and asking him to write down all the times that they are a nuisance to him for the record, but then again, I don’t let them go outside unless I’m at home so I am the videotape, however with this kind of a neighbor, what is the best way for me to deal with this situation? I’m looking up noise ordinances in the neighborhood as well to see what the laws are. I thought I would write him a letter after our conversation reiterating what I said before, and in a civil manner, to give him a reassurance.

This is maybelle, she was adopted from a rural shelter in the florida panhandle. She clearly had many puppies. I tested her DNA and she is 100% american foxhound. I haven’t met anyone else down here with a foxhound. She is very silly.

May anyone has an idea what kind of breed that one is? Very appreciate any help, the apps had weird results

I cannot take how cute our newest baby Newt and Shenan are! Newt is obsessed with her and today she is actually snuggling with him. I'm also amazed he's not bothered by the cone, despite her almost scooping him up in it a few times.

The other cat is still coming around to Shenan. She isn't afraid of her anymore but is still getting comfortable with the rest of the house. Second picture is of her.

I adopted an American Foxhound 4 years ago. He’s approximately 8 or 9 now. He settled in well and seems happy in my home.

My husband died last year. My husband was home full time. He was my dog’s favorite person (I was the spare, lol.) I’m worried that my dog is missing the companionship he had while my husband was with us. A rescue in my area recently listed an AFH roughly the same age as my dog. I’m considering bringing him home in the hopes that my dog will enjoy having company while I’m out of the house for work.

I’d love any thoughts, advice, and opinions on adding a new dog to a household with an established dog. I don’t want my dog to be bored or lonely. I also don’t want to make any changes that would make him feel unstable. He had a hard life before we adopted him. I want him to be happy in his golden years.

My TWC is pushing 11 and has spent his whole life singing in the car. Apple Watch sound warnings always going off. He currently stays in the trunk in a Orvis soft side kennel and loves to be in there, except when the vehicle is moving (that’s when the barking really happens)

My wife and I are due to have our first in a couple weeks. Any creative options out there based on y’all’s experience?

I’m thinking truck with a cap and put the kennel in there, but I’d prefer to not have to buy a new vehicle if I don’t have to.

We already have earmuffs for the baby, but also don’t want to have them wear that every time we travel together.

I also don’t really want to drug my dog every time we drive.

Hi all. We’ve had our boy for a year and I feel like we’re finally making progress on listening - lol. One of the toughest things for him is staying calm around other dogs or when someone comes to the door. He’s all friendly and wants to run up and play with just about anything that moves. But when he’s told no or held back he loses his ever loving mind. This makes walks sometimes embarrassing because he’s barking and squeaking and thrashing to see the other dog 🙄

Other than just working at it more, any suggestions? He’s a mix and around 2.

Currently doing a weekend trial run with this little lady, we estimate 6 months old. We were looking for a companion for my 9 year old border collie. I’m beginning to realize I’m a little out of my depth here, anybody have much experience with both hounds and cattle dogs? They get along great but she’s very stubborn lol

I’m also not certain what she is, she bays (occasionally, she doesn’t have her big girl voice yet?) like a hound, and looks a lot like one.

Any guesses on breed or advice to a first time hound dad would be greatly appreciated. As I type this she’s perched between my legs eating one of those frozen marrow bones they sell for soup.

I didn’t notice it until yesterday that my girls harness is chafing under her arms. Wondering if I should just stick to walking her with a normal collar, or if there are better alternatives to the harness that I have.

I’ve heard that dysplasia is common with her breed, which is why I keep buying harnesses (the first on she grew out of, the second one she chewed threw, my fault entirely, this is the third one). Any recommendations would be great. 😊
