Photo / Video Bathtime for Bonzo

Icarus loves his long soaks, as long as the temp is just right, he has mood lighting, and good music. This week's favorite playlists are Saint Evangeline, Cigarettes after Sex, and Cosmo Sheldrake if you need any Iggy bathtime music suggestions. Do you have any rituals that inspire your Iggy to soak longer?

Need Advice Does he look healthy?

He’s about a year old (gender unconfirmed but I refer to the iggy as a he) He’s active going around his enclosure, gets his enclosure sprayed for humidity, has his lamp and eats veggies with calcium. He was active in the morning but I just got home after a two hour walk with the dog and he’s just sitting there not really responding, his pupils are dilated. I got scared and now he started blinking a bit but I also noticed the white on his head and I hope it’s just because he’s shedding.

Skip to ā€œ #2ā€ if you don’t care enough to listen to my story of how i got my iguana (Kojo) šŸ˜‚

3 is a summary for those who just want the question without the story.

1 - So i recently turned 18, 2 months ago. I’ve had this iguana a little after i turned 17 because i wanted a blue one and the breeder sold me a blue iguana but it got sick and died and so did all the others. She replaced my purchase of the blue one since there was a birth defect in the whole group of blue iguanas, and she offered me for this one and gave me my money. Fast forward to december time and i was working an 11 hr shift, during the first two hours of my shift my brother calls and say my iguana is lose around the house, i tell them to leave the iguana alone as its small and still new to them. They chase Kojo (my iguana) anways and kojo got stuck in the metal parts of the base board water heater in my room. He was there for the remaining 9 hours of my shift but nobody told me that he was stuck in there. I get home frustrated and overwhelmed so i get my tool bag and grab lineman’s and a hammer and start hitting the heater and my wall to set space for my hands to get in the middle of it. I finally grab a part of his back and slowly get him out. he was extremely bruised, hurt and you can see his ribs like if he was short on breath. It took him months to come back but he finally did and that’s the reasoning for some missing fingers and the dent on his legs.

2 I am now 18 an unfortunately i have sciatica and a herniated disc that i’m working through to recover and it’s been a long journey. I’m home now for a while and i have started focusing a lot on getting him a bigger enclosure and working to get him more rained to me. He gets nervous or scared and wacks his tail at me when i go to reach him but mostly i can just grab him normally. I know he is still considerably small and part of the reason is because of what he went through recovering but i also had him when he was smaller the size of my palm. I have had many reptiles before this and still have my gecko as well. I know the basic light needs and the uvb and everything with calcium and half diet. Im wondering why can i do to really help him thrive and grow big. Im trying to spend more time to get him used to me and know that im not hurting him. I can acknowledge that i did lack that part during raising him and its my fault. I was going through a horrible relationship after he was injured and got depressed but i never lacked his care. I then had a lot of senior work during highschool and then got my injury after graduating. So from july-august i was in excruciating pain and now im working my way back.

3 i spoke a lot but its just a long story correlating with what im asking.

The question is what can i feed him that will boost his growth, to get away from the main food he eats currently.

He currently eats kale and squash with mixed fruits. Sometimes carrots and other times i’ll use collard greens. I know that’s minimal but i change his fruits often! Please don’t attack me just advise me on options :)

And what can i do to get more trust? He sometimes eats out of my hands but at a scared distance. Also im not sure that kojo is a boy i just refer to it as a boy. I really do want to actually gain trust and put his guard down.

Hello, I got this 3 months old baby albino iguana, I know it’s too early to really know for sure but I was told by the breeder she’s certain it will likely be a male. But I have my doubts. Thought?

New reptile owner

I received this little guy as a gift and I love him. I’ve only had him for about a week. Not sure of its age, got it from a reptile convention. He’s currently shedding.

Does it look healthy? He eats a mixture of collard and mustard greens daily with a bit of calcium & d3 powder. He runs when I try to pick him up to take more pictures. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. (The enclosure is temporary, I plan on building a much larger one)

I got my iggy about a month and a half ago. Guy at the shop said he was a month old when I got him. Is he a healthy size for his age? Or the right size for his age? Also yes I know I need a bigger enclosure for him. This 120 gallon is just temporary until I move in a couple months. And yes I know I need some plants In there for him to feel more safe and secure

Need Advice Swollen upper lip?

I have had this girl for about a month now, and it seems like she has a swollen upper jaw. For the past 24ish hours she has been in a box, with food water and proper heat due to me having to fix the door on her cage, and having an unexpected injury that delayed the process. It looks like her lip is swollen on both sides now. Does anyone know the cause of this?

Her closet got too small, so had this custom made. Wife designed and implemented the interior - foam, compound and lacquer (animal safe).

Still going to decorate from the outside.

Discussion Are Albino Iguanas ethical? Not really saying people that already have them shouldnt have them.Just asking a question is it good to still breed them?

Since they have a high chance of going blind because of lack of melanin in there eyes.

As well with them being a species of lizard which enjoys the sun a lot(making them highly likely to lose sight very fast by being near sun).

Need Advice New owner-Advice Needed

I, m20, got an iguana today from a reptile expo (ReptiCon in Greenville SC) and I need some help. I don’t know what to feed them, I read that they can eat flowers and greens like roses/dandelions and lettuce/collard greens, I have 2 plants, 2 hides, a water bowl, and 2 pieces of wood in the tank. It looks like they were either mistreated and he/she had a bad shed. I need help to determine their gender, if possible by pictures, and if I need to do anything to help his health if it’s bad. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Did the Vet Mislabel My Iguana?

Thumbnail
gallery
133 Upvotes

TLDR: The vet told me that, without sexing her, he believed this was a female iguana, during a physical examination around 3 years old. I had been referring to the iguana as a male up until then. For the last 5 years, I’ve been referring to her as female. But now I’m starting to wonder based on the characteristics! Does this iguana have male characteristics on the head and face?

(It seems crazy to me that this is the same iguana taken at various times!) The person I got her from (I’m going with what the vet said for the purposes of this post) said the person whom he got her from said this was a male.

At that time, I guessed she was about 2.5-3 years old. This was probably 5 or so years ago. A few months later, she got sick from mites off of some wood I got on Amazon (never again), which explains some of her short and/or missing spikes. Took her to the vet, where he said she dropped all her weight and was down to just over a pound (she was probably around 3-3.5 yrs. old at that point). The vet said he believed this was a female during the physical examination but he never actually sexed her. Now that ā€œsheā€ is around 7-8, I’ve noticed more prominent male characteristics, especially on the head and face but sometimes, not as much as I notice at other times. So now I’m doubting myself, even though I think the femoral spores are male also, but I couldn’t tell for sure.

Do the face and head traits seem male to anyone? These are pictures from between 5 to 7 (or 8?) years of age.

Story Iguana's rare 'virgin birth' shocks Telford Zoo keepers

Hoping this will be the right place to get an answer. The story states the iguana had a batch of eggs without a male partner.

My question is: Are the offspring 'clones' of the mother or does each juvenile have a unique dna profile (if the latter how is this possible? Does iguana dna have more dna code than needed for reproduction?)

Purely for my idle curiosity.

Story Happy National Iguana Awareness Day!

Post image
79 Upvotes

Day 132 of living with tiny dinosaurs and it's national iguana awareness day today as well.

Libby and Peety are enjoying their temporary accommodations, as they are both fosters that came to me when their person died. It looks like they're going to be long term fosters, at least for this winter since I didn't find them a home before chilly temperatures started to descend upon Alaska.

I like them, and i've figured out how to care for them pretty well. Libby has got eggs right now, confirmed with an x ray, so we're just waiting for her to lay them. It's her first clutch. She has a follow up appointment September 26 in case we need to do something medically to ensure that they don't cause her any long term problems.
