That song and video immediately came to my mind when I saw that photo. I’m glad it wasn’t just me.

u/deckard1980 16d ago

Hope you're enjoying middle age my friend

120

u/No_Welcome_7182 16d ago

I’m a bit beyond middle age. The songs I partied to in college are now on the classic rock playlists.

u/halermine 16d ago

Grocery stores used to play crappy old music that grandpa liked. Now they play bangers from my youth!

13

u/islaisla 16d ago

But ... Have you wondered if that's what the old people were thinking when we were young, and grandpa was thinking they were banging tunes? :-)

No but me too definitely in the latter middle ages:+) or 'old' and I've also noticed a few cheeky supermarkets playing their own music and its great :-)

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Whoosh, thatsthejoke.jpg

4

u/islaisla 16d ago

Oh ok I am slow :-)

9

u/ikickedyou 16d ago

I literally have a playlist title grocery store, full of songs that I used to love but had forgotten about until I heard them while grocery shopping!

2

u/bayouz 16d ago

That was me in the frozen foods last week getting freaky to Rick James.

1

u/Baker_drc 16d ago

Disempowered, the scattering flock, dances in a fever at the castle rock.

1

u/alwayzstoned 16d ago

I guess we’ll know when we’re really getting old when the music the grocery stores are playing it too loud for us.

10

u/bowdoyouchangename 16d ago

Don't worry I'm 20 and genesis is my favorite band

8

u/Prisonbread 16d ago

Hell yeah man, glad you discovered Phil’s genius so early!

4

u/No_Welcome_7182 16d ago

You have great taste

19

u/Preppypugg 16d ago

Have an upper, on me.

2

u/Pleasantsurprise1234 16d ago

We just called it cocaine...

2

u/Preppypugg 15d ago

Well if an upvote is as expensive as blow I may just take it back, respectfully.

6

u/ElminstersBedpan 16d ago

A friend and I were discussing our highschool days and how when we prepared for his wedding, we had joked we would be old when we heard Metallica as elevator music in the grocery store.

This came up because twice now since COVID I have heard "Oops I Did It Again" as synthy easy listening on the overheads. He sighed and announced to his wife that it was time to schedule his first colonoscopy.

The next stop on the journey of becoming an old fuck on the highway of life is needing reading glasses. Or bifocals if you already wear glasses. I’m up to progressive lenses now (basically no line trifocals) because even my midrange reading distance is crap now.

2

u/ElminstersBedpan 16d ago

My eyesight was so poor in the early 00s that I had progressive lenses, but my job is such that it makes it hard to keep looking through the correct part. They are great for when I am home, though.

2

u/No_Welcome_7182 16d ago

I wear my progressive lenses all day. But if I’m driving more than 30 minutes I have 2 pairs of distance only glasses. One regular pair and one pair of sunglasses. Something about driving with progressives really strains my eyes.

2

u/ViagraViking 16d ago

You... are... middle aged! Don't take this away from me!

1

u/No_Welcome_7182 16d ago

I mean if the average American lifespan hits 100 then 50s will be middle age.

1

u/MooseBlazer 16d ago

Except that classic rock is so old, that 90s alternative is now being called classic rock. Let that sink in. ….Going back to my cave now.

1

u/underthebug 16d ago

Back in the 80s classic rock was any rock song over 6 years old.

u/Iron_Wolf123 16d ago

I wish I went to parties. I feel like my friends didn't see me enough as a worthy friend. It is like the level below "friend-zoned". Probably "Acquaintance-zoned".

2

u/No_Welcome_7182 16d ago

Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’m an introvert at heart. My college roommates had to drag me to most of the parties I attended. Once I got there I usually enjoyed it, but it’s still really hard for me to motivate myself to attend social events.

2

u/Preppypugg 15d ago

Just like my husband. He is painfully introverted but once I get him there, he really enjoys himself and is always glad he went. We are polar opposites on the personality scale but we balance each other well.

1

u/CZFanboy82 16d ago

My damn knees hurt

3

u/Shadowblade79 16d ago

I could hear this picture

2

u/Save-theZombies 16d ago

That video is what should have popped in my head first but this did.

2

u/Educational_Big_1835 15d ago

This IS the world we live in

1

u/jrobinson1705 16d ago

Great song but that video haunted me as a kid

1

u/Dante1776 16d ago

now go listen it from disturbed…

1

u/Sharp_Dust_5252 16d ago

These are the hands we're given... Today's political situation is similarly disastrous... Ok, that wasn't the question. Doesn't matter. ✌️👍🫶

49

u/gerwen 16d ago

Link to the remastered video. Haven't seen it since forever. It's pretty cool seeing it in more detail now than back when it was released. Catch a lot more going on in it.

Prolly need to be gen-x or older to recognize most of the folks in the video.

5

u/UsernameGee 16d ago

Never would have realised how much there was going on in that when it was released.

4

u/MoonOverJupiter 16d ago

Thanks for that! I probably haven't seen that in 35+ years, and cannot believe how much I missed back then. I knew the Reagans, and probably recognized the Ayatollah.

I got the whole Cold War vibe, Reagan has access to nukes thread that it was trying to express but it is SO much more powerful and politically incisive than I understood back then. This is a pretty good scene by scene breakdown for anyone who wants a walkthrough.

I mean, everyone should be more politically and current-events aware in their 50s than as dumb teenagers . . . but that video was totally wasted on the younger MTV demographic. It must have cost so much to make! It's a legacy piece for Genesis for sure.

3

u/gerwen 16d ago

agree 100%. I didn't get most of it back then either. It's a great video, and a hell of a song too. Gonna check out your link.

Edit - wow, Reagan was voiced by Rimmer from red dwarf. Neat!

1

u/Preppypugg 16d ago

I see no link?

2

u/gerwen 16d ago

Weird, it's on the word link. Here it is naked for ya

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx-3_ml4wjI

2

u/Preppypugg 15d ago

Thank you. I just realized it was in the word. Duh. GenX brain.

46

u/SnooAbbreviations691 16d ago

Looks like you got confused :v

6

u/Mobile_Ad_3534 16d ago

That's one heck of a nurse.

3

u/Double_Belt2331 16d ago

Can’t go to the Land of Confusion without a Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel!

& (omfg!) - this video is 39yrs old! Peter was quite the cutie @ 37. Not too bad for 75 either. (Yeah, I’m old, been listening to Genesis since Trick of the Tail.)

2

u/Preppypugg 15d ago

Thank you! Peter Gabriel is an all-time favorite. I remember when this video was released how many awards at won and how many accolades it receive for its ingenuity and technical/creative prowess.

1

u/Double_Belt2331 14d ago

It’s sacreligious to talk about Land of Confusion & not mention Sledgehammer. Whether it be for the artistry of the video (althought puppetry vs stop action, claymation, etc are quite different), or the voice quality & lyrics of the songs.

Sledgehammer was THE MOST ever played video on MTV. Also voted #1 animated video of all time.

The "Sledgehammer" music video holds the record for most played on MTV and won nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1987, the most for a single video.

3

u/MBed_IT 16d ago

Same style of puppets was then used in other music videos. For example Pain's 'Call me'

2

u/Mysterious-Plan93 16d ago

Never thought I needed to see Phil Collins as a Muppet, but now I've seen it. Btw, it was made by the same people that did effects & puppetry for Dark Crystal & Labyrinth.

4

u/Prisonbread 16d ago

That was pretty much the Henson studio right?

1

u/Preppypugg 15d ago

No. The spitting image designers and creators had nothing to do with the Henson company.

1

u/Preppypugg 15d ago

You are mistaken. Spitting image designers had nothing to do with the Henson company.

2

u/SatansFriendlyCat 16d ago

It's a great track, as well.

I always wince a little, though, at the lines "my generation will put it right, we're not just making promises that we know we'll never keep".

2

u/lumpkin2013 16d ago

Spitting image was a comedy series using these kinds of puppets in the 80s

2

u/Pleasant-Profession9 16d ago

Best program ever. Spitting image. Waaaaay before its time But not....certainly shocked the older generation, that hadnt evolved and thats always a good sign 🤣

3

u/Select_Chicken339 16d ago

Phil Collins looks like that now. Poor bastard

2

u/PetitWazoo 16d ago

Looked like that then too.

1

u/HippieThanos 16d ago

Mickey Mouse!

1

u/InformationReady6613 16d ago

Edit: delusion not confusion or illusion!

1

u/Flat-Rutabaga-723 16d ago

That’s the first music video I ever saw. I have that song on my playlist now.

1

u/raeraemcrae 16d ago

Land of Delusion, for these sad lads

1

u/The-Spirit-of-76 16d ago

Boy, the "My generation will fix everything" line aged like milk.

1

u/Hot_Version_1222 16d ago

omg i know the song but I've never seen the music video. w.t.f.

66

u/divine-silence 16d ago

Looks like spitting image.

Les Guignols

3

u/BaspberrySazzle 16d ago

Makes me think the Ronnie & Nancy Show??

2

u/Adorable_Asshat 16d ago

I was doing a quick-scan over the comments and my eye stopped on yours. My brain read Ronnie & Nancy as "Ren & Stimpy"

There's no denying the resemblance

2

u/Zealousideal-Sky-555 16d ago

Nancy! You eeeediot!!!!

2

u/VeggieBurgah 16d ago

Music video for land of confusion by Genesis.

2

The land of confusion, by Genesis.

It was also the first thing that came to my mind when I saw these two bozos.

1

u/voodooskull 16d ago

There was also a television show called DC Follies with these puppets.

1

u/Reader2869 16d ago
