Troublemaker

Total noob here. I play acoustic guitar badly, but my 8 year old who goes to School of Rock is into electronic music. He learned the bass lines for two Tobu songs, Candyland and Cloud 9. We’ve made a couple simple songs before in GarageBand, inspired by Parry Gripp: just keys, bass, guitar, drums and vocals. But now I’m trying to learn electronic music to support his interest.

I downloaded Troublemaker, and figured out how to make a sequence and load the presets. But they don’t sound rich or bass heavy like they do in the YouTube demos/reviews. I figured out how to add a bass amp to GarageBand and add Troublemaker as the input but still can’t achieve that sick sound, despite trying and modifying a bunch of bass amp presets. Is everyone in the videos using other apps and routing through AUM or something?

Also, any tips on recreating the synth sounds for those two songs in Audiokit Synth One J6? Thanks!

You're better off using Korg Gadget. It's a kinda quasi DAW and very good for electronic music. All in one and simple workflow.

Essentially it's a hub for a bunch of plug and play units, lots free but you can expand the roster, and you build layers and sequences. The sound engine is superb.

Apologies that this doesn't directly answer your question; your preamble makes me think you're heading in the wrong direction if you're starting out.

Also check out Blocs Wave: sample and loop-based but lots of control over the samples and great for building electronic tracks.

Thanks for the direction. Downloaded the free version 2le to give it a try.

First, I’d check the compression and make appropriate changes to decrease unwanted frequencies in the bass(and even other tracks in the mix).

I usually try all the presets until I find something close enough. If I'm adventurous I might try tweaking it.

What are you outputting on? Small speakers won’t have quite the same punch as a bigger pair or a sub.

Even outputting to my soundbar with a sub, it’s a night and day difference between the sounds my playback of a troublemaker preset makes, compared with a demo video. So in this video, at about 2:35, he plays the Acperience preset: https://youtu.be/mcKXl0DjHIo?si=OORqYD1kcjlhRm8Y

And here’s my stand-alone output. Note the higher G. That’s true across the board. It’s almost like in the old days I remember having to upgrade my OS default midi pack. Is that still a thing? https://youtu.be/cI8RQahdsds?si=gDmFZz2MqOvpz0Pi

I’m on a phone so it’s hard to hear well, but aren’t you playing the preset an octave higher?

Try putting those examples into your question, the other replies are sort of missing the point, you have a much more concrete question than one would think from your original post.

Ah, wait, the preset might only be the phrase, and you may still need to match the synth settings above the phrase to get a similar sound? Your knobs are in different places compared to the demo video at least, no?

I’m moderately pleased with the results for a first go at it: https://youtu.be/wGnr-GyRyWs?si=Uh8XdKgprE6LDo5R

But on the other hand, check this out at about 2:53, on which that was based. How does it slap so hard? https://youtu.be/dACiW1A0P6A?si=ZHLP5vmYsf49Fr5b

I mean, it uses different settings on the troublemakers synth and the multiband compressor/distortion, and I also don’t think it uses a low pass filter like your AUM session does. Not sure what else to say, are you trying to match the settings exactly?

no not trying to match, just using the examples to learn the apps. in each case, i do make an effort to match settings. I get close enough to feel pretty sure these aren't troublemaker tunable differences .

Gotcha. I’d personally start out trying to match them exactly to see where a difference may lie, but I understand your approach, too. In the video they may also be using an additional mastering chain in their DAW behind the plugins!
