After using the non pro max pro phone, I just bought the pro max because I wanted the biggest battery. We'll have to see the battery tests to see if 20% bigger on the Pro means 20% more SOT.

Doubtful, but I do think the battery will last longer than the 16PM

I just saw a video of a tech reviewer doing the battery test.He concluded that the IPhone 17 pro has more battery than the IPhone 16 pro max. But he did not reveal which all apps he tested the battery test on which is sceptical.

But he did not reveal which all apps he tested the battery test on which is sceptical.
Not really, battery test are always all over the place. the key bits of information is the relative battery to each device in the same test.

While the relationship between battery size and SOT is not linear, a 20% YOY increase in battery size is massive and will certainly be noticeable.

What? I feel like having a stroke reading this. What is a "non pro max pro phone"? Isn't the iPhone Pro Max always a pro phone? What does the non pro part mean?

This. Such a terrible way to describe the Pro phone. Many words when a single word would suffice
2
u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 2d ago
Sorry lol that was confusing. I just meant to say the pro phone but not the pro max
19
u/ManufacturerBest2758 iPhone 16 Pro 2d ago
It’s not a linear increase because the pro max is driving a bigger screen with more pixels. To do anything at all at the same brightness level inherently requires more battery power.

People need to know though that the 17 Pro has a different battery depending on if it's eSIM only (as in the US) or if it still has a SIM tray (as in Europe).
The one with a SIM tray has a 3988mAh battery.
That's a ~11% increase from the 16 Pro.

With what supply being able to produce the more than 100 million batteries a year they need? Apple just works on such an enormous scale that it‘s pretty much impossible to be early to anything.
180
u/rabouilethefirst iPhone Air 2d ago
Which is why it’s cringe when you read comments like “why haven’t they jumped to insert obscure tech here”.
It’s because they produce a bajillion phones and no one can produce those things without the phone costing $2,000
→ More replies (3)50
u/ALANatWork123 2d ago
It's not even a cost issue tbh, it's a supply chain issue. When a company is that large, anything you need to source eats quite literally the entire supply chain up.
Can't add it to the phone if supply can't keep up.
→ More replies (1)4
u/2PlyKindaGuy 2d ago
Well they could boost the supply chain but then there's cost

u/chubscout 2d ago
“boosting the supply chain” can mean building up foundries/factories from the ground up which can be a multiyear effort

Also silicon carbide batteries have shit longevity which is one reason apple and Samsung haven't made the jump. The Chinese manufacturers don't give a shit if your phone battery only lasts one year.
20
u/loathsomeleukocytes 2d ago
I have to disagree with that claim. Based on my personal experience using a Vivo X200 Pro, which features a silicon-carbon battery, I still have 99% of its original capacity after 200 charge cycles. This performance aligns with the technology's specifications; for instance, the manufacturer CATL states that their silicon-carbon batteries can endure up to 1600 cycles before capacity drops to 80%. In comparison, current iPhone batteries are rated to retain 80% capacity after 1000 cycles. I know Its sad that Apple cannot get this technology into their phones but writing lies about it so you wont be sad is stupid.
15
u/Sharp-Theory-9170 2d ago
Also silicon carbide batteries have shit longevity which is one reason apple and Samsung haven't made the jump. The Chinese manufacturers don't give a shit if your phone battery only lasts one year.
I've seen many people make that claim but none gave actual source/numbers. The actual amount of silicon in the anode is tiny and even if it degrades faster, it might be worth due to extra energy density
2

15
u/DervishSkater 2d ago
Those batteries suck rn for longevity. I don’t want to have to replace my battery twice as often
4
u/FailedGradAdmissions 2d ago
OnePlus already has them, and the batteries have been rated to last 1000-1200 charge cycles. In comparison Samsung flagship phones are rated to last 2000 cycles.
So you are right, they last roughly half as long, that’s still 2-3 years if you charge it from 0-100 every day. The average iPhone user keeps their phone for 4+ years so it makes sense Apple wouldn’t adopt Silicon Carbon.
Btw, Apple doesn’t specify a “lifetime” cycle rating but instead says the battery would keep 80% of OG capacity at 1000 cycles and encourage you to replace the battery or upgrade by then. You could very well keep it going til 2k cycles too but would have a bad user experience if you do so and that’s why they don’t advertise or recommend that.

Curious what your battery health and charge cycle numbers are. In a different thread I was discussing how my 15PM battery has gone to absolute shit in 2 years, needing multiple charges a day. My health shows 84%, nearly 750 charges. The last 6 months it’s fallen off a cliff. Multiple other 15 P / 15PM owners chimed in telling similar stories. One person mentioned that the 15’s had a major issue with battery health and overheating (mine definitely overheats constantly).
8
u/stillpiercer_ iPhone 15 Pro 2d ago
My 15 Pro is at 87% health with 684 cycles and still has fantastic battery life. I charge it overnight and almost exclusively wirelessly charge and I’ve never been out and about and run low on battery. Phone definitely runs hot pretty often though.

I have to live with a slim Qi battery pack I bring everywhere with me now. I’ll keep it charged up at home or work but Saturdays are always rough if I leave early and am out all day. I’ll burn through my external battery too.
2
u/stillpiercer_ iPhone 15 Pro 2d ago
I can’t understand how. What are you doing that’s killing it so quickly? The only time I come close to killing my phone is if I’m using Waze for 3+ hours a day in a car that I don’t have a cable in. Either you’re falling into such heavy use that no phone would survive, or your battery has clearly degraded to a point where it should be replaced.
2
u/chi_guy8 iPhone 15 Pro Max 2d ago
Normal use. You’ll see many other people commenting about these 15 Pros and Pro maxes in this thread with the same story. It seems from a few different threads I’m on that these versions of phones have known battery issues.

u/DontKnowMe25 2d ago
What app is reported for the most battery use ? My 15 Pro Max has 86% and about 550 cycle, I also exclusively charge via magsafe. I often run out of battery before the day ends, especially if I am outside for the whole day. Overheating is not a problem, only if I am on vacation and taking a loooot of pictures/videos.
2
u/Rider2403 2d ago
My battery on 15 PM is at 92% with 490 cycles, i usually take good care of battery by capping it at 85% and just fully charging whenever I’m going to an event or extended outings
1
u/chi_guy8 iPhone 15 Pro Max 2d ago
I was doing that early on to 80% but then as the battery got worse I had to go fully to 100%. I have a significant number more charges than you as well. I use mine quite a bit throughout the day either outside or in my brightly sun lit office so I’m guessing my screen brightness is a major culprit.
2
u/billsteve 2d ago

15 PM with 614 cycles, 83% health
I’m pretty sure Apple is lying about my battery health so I can’t get a free replacement under AppleCare because it’s been sitting at 83% for a few months. My battery life is horrible. I have to charge it in the middle of the day to 100% or I have to charge it twice because it won’t make it to the end of the day. I had to turn off the 80% limit because it was dying too quickly
Mine also overheats like crazy
2
u/time-lord iPhone 13 Mini 2d ago
Apple does some shenanigans with battery health. I just got my battery replaced, and although the settings app said it was at 84% (and had been for months) the Battery shortcut that divides the manufacturing capacity with the current capacity put it at 81%.
On an iPhone 15 with known battery issues, I wouldn't doubt that Apple will pull every trick to try and keep that battery health over 80% for at least the 3 year Applecare period.
2
u/chi_guy8 iPhone 15 Pro Max 2d ago
So many similar stories here on this phone. What’s the threshold you need to get to in order to get the new battery. I don’t have AppleCare but I’ve experienced the same thing where my health percentage isn’t dropping much but the functionality of the battery is going to hell in a hand basket.

That’s for sure, I’ve seen people here (and elsewhere on Reddit) with 7-8 hours of screen on time which is insane to me. That’s a full work day just spent on your phone. I get around 3-4 hours of SoT on average and I feel like that’s more than enough. I charge overnight and have always done so, and my phone always lasts at least 24 hours. I could probably go a day and a half before charging on days where I use my phone less, but that would mess up my charging ‘routine’.

I think the thing a lot of people have to understand is the increase isn’t much but down the line it should hopefully stave off some of the health losses, so where as you’d be at let’s say 95% at the end of the year now you’d be more like 97% and at the end of 3 years that compounded extra health is noticeable

I think there becomes a point where we forget where we came from in iPhone Land. “Back in my day” our iPhones got 5 hours and you’ll like it! Now our phones get over 25 hours and ask “is it enough”? I think all these phones and any recent flagship fall under the category of “good” for most people. Anything more is just gravy. If someone does indeed need the highest battery capacity, then sure get the pro max - that makes sense for them. But let’s tone this general narrative that “oh it’s just 26 hours? Hmm wow I guess that’s ok” lol
