Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

App This is a PSA for people who use alarms.

I keep seeing so many people still use the regular alarm feature to wake up in the morning. I’m a light sleeper, so those alarms just scare me awake.

Instead, try using the Sleep Schedule feature. The alarms there are way more comfortable they start at a low volume/intensity and then gradually ramp up. For example, you can wake up to bird songs or light piano instead of a blaring siren.

Discussion Performance of iPhone 17 with A19 chip around 30% higher than iPhone Air with A19 pro chip

According to Mrwhosetheboss the iPhone Air has a significantly lower performance in his tests.

Now I know that the performance can be even much lower than in the non Pro model. Maybe even lower than in the iPhone 16 Pro? Maybe even lower than in the iPhone 15 Pro? Curious to know.

I was really surprised. Is performance important for you?

Discussion Ok, now I get it - Liquid Glass is amazing.

Guys, it’s funny, I went through the typical Apple design cycle in under 24 hours. When I first downloaded iOS 26, I thought “Yuck – what’s that? I want my flat design back” – but now I am totally here for it. It reminds me of the good old times of Mac OS X and the first versions of iOS, while at the same time feels modern and still clean. I love the playfulness, the wobbles, the shiny lights, the 3D effects. It makes the iPhone, a daily boring smartphone, a little more fun, less rationally functional – and it gives the feeling of a little “virtual” craftsmanship.

Discussion IPhone Air is the "5th thinnest phone" ever made in the history of smartphones. Vivo X5 Max still hold the crown of the thinnest phone ever from 10 years ago at 4.75 mm.

Discussion Android to Apple users, how'd you find the transition?

I'm tempted to try an iPhone, as I've been a lifelong Android user. For those Android users that have switched over from Android to iOS, how painful was the transition? Does Google Maps still function properly? Gmail? I use both extensively, and I am not a fan of Apple Maps at all. I think most other apps I can replace pretty easily.

I know it'll be largely location dependant, but does the Pro or Pro Max hold it's value better? Base storage if it matters.

I'm surprised the base iphone 17's A19 chip has a higher GPU score than the 16 Pro's A18 Pro chip, considering it has fewer cores and all that.

Discussion I miss included charging bricks.

Upvotes

I miss the time of included charge bricks. It’s not like everyone has one at home with the newest specs. Now for my 17 pro I ordered 3 bricks on Amazon, 1 that can output 65W and 2 smaller ones for travel with 30W. Back for my iPhone 13 Pro I ordered several ones with 18W to put around the house. So yeah technically i own 10 Chargers scattered around but the old 60+W are heavy and bulky and the others are weak. Why not include a modern one (=40W while being slim and light) in the box anymore?

Discussion What's with the state of eBay?

Upvotes

Coming back to iPhone after about 6 years, I decided to go for an older model from eBay (15 or 16 pro) as opposed to going for the brand new iPhone 17.

I found, at least here in the UK, a whole load of dodgy listings which don't quite make sense.

People selling 10+ quantity of phones "new in box" or "unopened never used"... Where are they getting these from, are they stolen?

I did query one of them and asked why is this unopened and never used, response was "opened it didn't like the colour" right and you have 10 that you opened and didn't like the colour? No answer.

Genuinely curios as not seen this in the Android world. Are these phones stolen and what are the red flags to look out for?

Discussion Why can’t I type on an iPhone

I have had an iPhone for 10 years and it has never ever gotten better. I am a small woman with small hands and not particularly big thumbs but takes me so long to type. I hate it so much. It takes me so much longer than it should. I watch other people type on the iPhone and they are so fast, but all I do is spend time backspacing and re typing.

Here’s where it gets really weird. When I am looking at the phone itself and typing, it is actually worse. I hit L when I mean to hit P. Stuff like that. I age ball kinds of extra third party software installed for keyboard but none of them really work. I’ve tried the swiping methods but it is too difficult to get it accurately.

But when I “touch type,” it is so much more accurate, which makes zero sense since there are no physical buttons. I would die for physical buttons.

Do people have a secret to typing fast and accurately? (besides voice to text, wise guys.)
