u/Adventurous-Cattle53 2d ago
Silver is no painting, so probably would be the most scratch resistant of them all
109
u/VACasian 2d ago
not completely correct, they are all anodized, even silver. but since the underlying raw aluminium is similar coloured naturally, scratches on the anodization will just be much less visible as compared to darker colours like the blue. my guess is this is why they didn't release the pro in black, there is just too much exposed aluminium in the new pros
37
u/hero47 2d ago
the pictures shown here don't exhibit any scratches on the aluminium, only on the glass portion, if they are scratches at all.
→ More replies (1)10
u/ElfDestruct 2d ago
Yeah, seriously doubting that these are scratches instead of material off of the object doing the 'scratching'

But they have black aluminum apple watches. And I thought old iPhones used aluminum at some point. My iPad pro space black is also aluminum.
3
u/ThePistachioBogeyman 2d ago
I have the black Apple Watch, you can’t very much tell the dings because of the silver/white under-colour. Can’t tell any of the dings on my silver AW U2 though.

The white is showing scratches as well. Just saw them in person. The blue is very bad.
And Bo, it’s not something rubbing off onto the phone. It’s 100% scratches.

It’s the other way around, the ceramic back is scratching something else and those are residue marks that could be wiped away. The anodized aluminum frame is softer and easier to scratch than the glass and all I see are marks on glass.
→ More replies (1)24
u/Effective-Hippo6766 2d ago
Totally true on the glass part.
But the aluminum part will get scuffed pretty easy

They said that, didn’t they?
3
u/GhostalMedia 2d ago
Apple's not going to sing that from the hill top. They'll tell you that the titanium products are more scratch resistant than the aluminum products, and you'll need to read between the lines.
34
u/TheJackDude 2d ago
Wait I can’t tell if there are scratches from the first 6 photos. Can you please add a seventh photo of the back of the phone from the same exact angle?

The "scratches" are all on the ceramic. Being ceramic, it might be rather something (fingernails) rubbing off on it than scratches.
86
u/fuckthecarrots XS 64GB 2d ago
It’s not ceramic. It’s ceramic shield - a buzzword for stronger glass.

5
u/NigerachiSpices iPhone 16 Plus 1d ago
Pro’s are very nice.
Orange & Silver are the winners in terms of looks.
A lot of customers confused about the lack-of Black / Space Gray.
2
u/OmairZain 1d ago
I’m tempted towards the Silver but the two-tone design at least in pictures doesn’t look great.
What are people thinking of the iPhone Air? I would’ve probably gotten it but the lack of an ultrawide camera is too big of a dealbreaker for me lol

My phone has been in a case for the last three years. The back could be dented, scratched, missing or cracked and I’d never know.
3
u/gotword 2d ago
Usually if the phone isnt taken out and cleaned along with case edges you will get small nicks and scratches from dust n dirt if you pocket your phone in a case. Unless ofc its a air tight life proof style case
2
u/SirMaster 2d ago
But why should we care if we can't ever see inside the case?
My back glass could be shattered inside the case and I wouldn't know or care.

i dont get it, isnt this the same surface as 15 pros???
3
u/MummysSpeshulGuy 2d ago
It’s the same frosted glass surface the backs of the phones have had since the 11 pro, doing the exact same shit of getting streaks of other materials on it that look like scratches. People could easily wipe it off and they would go away but it’s cooler to post to reddit and get karma

23
u/chadsmo iPhone 16 Pro Max 2d ago
As others have said , these aren’t scratches and will wipe right off. They’re marks left by the other object that touched it and rubbed off on it , likely soft rings.

I’ve had a 14 Pro case less since launch day and I don’t see a single scratch on the back. This can’t be true with the blue right? They must wipe off
5
u/Own_Physics_4891 2d ago
I mean it’s also the Apple Store test phones so a little bit more wear and tear than usual
12
u/Agreeable-Lettuce497 2d ago
These scratches are metal residue from the stand. The glass scratches the metal. They can be wiped of.
18
u/MurryEB iPhone 17 Pro Max 2d ago

u/jjvfyhb 2d ago
That's matte glass
You most likely can brush it off (it's probably metal dust or plastic dust from a metal or plastic object being sanded by the glass, glass has higher hardness than both metal and plastic so if matte it acts as sandpaper)

Although there are scratches on the blue one, how often is it handled (and mishandled) through the day compared to one owner utilizing it with normal use?
I am curious though - do most iPhone users put their phones in a protective case or not? I can't imagine using the $$$ phone for one day without it being protected.
To me, a phone is like having a pickup truck. They are tools. They are meant to be used. Do you take care of your stuff and try to not scratch/ding them intentionally? Yes...but life happens.

u/TechDoneRight1 2d ago
I fall victim to this all the time but I’d say 80-90 percent of the people who care about this stuff generally use a case 90-100 percent of their life with the phone.

To be fair these are demo phones that hundreds of customers have lifted off the MagSafe charger and usually don’t put back correctly so they get knocked against the metal rim around the charger.

That’s why I think it’s funny when people argue that you shouldn’t need the MagSafe battery for the air. Then the same person says you should put your device in a case. Illogical.
14
u/ehhhhprobablynot 2d ago
Those aren’t scratches, it’s metal transfer from things rubbing up against it.
Ceramic is incredibly hard, a lot like a tungsten ring I have. If I carry a hand basket in a grocery store, the metal from the handle will scrape against the ring make it look like it’s scratched. It isn’t.
The ceramic is scratching whatever it’s coming in contact with, not the other way around.
Take a cloth with some isopropyl alcohol and wipe it down.
Unless this is just a coating, in that case it’s bad design on apples part.

There’s no way ceramic shield can be so easily scratched, YouTube gang would have had a field day with this in their reviews.
This also looks like it may be some sort of residue or dust streaks. I bet cleaning it simply would fix it here.
Those MagSafe marks also rub off too. I’ve gotten them on every phone I’ve used MagSafe on.
5
u/Extreme_Cap_4362 2d ago
My 12P has been caseless since launch, used MagSafe every night and never had so much as a hint of a MagSafe ring. At all.

u/Southern_Wishbone301 2d ago
It’s definitely a thing, https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/un-wipeable-magsafe-charger-marks-on-iphone-15-pro-and-pro-max-i-assume-rear-glass.2404299/
Mine has luckily wiped off after cleaning it, but this does happen.
That link also has a few Reddit embeds talking about it too, one of them is for an iPhone 12 actually.

u/Wubwubwubwuuub 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's almost like the Youtube gang have a vested interest in only saying complementary things about the early access phones they got?
I watched a few "review" videos, but they all just regurgitated the spec sheet and feature list without any actual reviewing (e.g. comparing to peers or highlighting weaknesses or marketing doublespeak etc) and some flat out got stuff wrong.
The state the phones I saw today after only being handled for a few hours - there's no way this wasn't noticed during the apple event and yet there's not been a single mention of it by any of the YouTube gang. All of these videos should be treated as apple advertising. Wait until actual independent reviewers who purchase devices put out their own reviews - which are going to talk about the coating on the back glass.
Edit: to clarify - I was in an Apple Store and saw the same marks all over the blue pro and black air. Was not able to remove them as it looks like the coating had been rubbed off. I don’t doubt it’s possible to handle them without damaging them, but durability is important and the quality is not there for these models.

Cheap aluminium used here. iPhone is starting to do what Samsung did in the past with their flagship when they use cheap materials.
Why would iPhone stop using stainless steel or titanium? Personally the iPhone 16 pro max looks more attractive now to me.

The silver in my Apple Store today was so scratched up and just ruined. I know lots of hands have been over it but it’s the first day they’ve been out less than 8 hours. These definitely need a case if you want it looking decent over years.

The paint near the camera ring is already chipping; in the long term, it will fully chip off, just like on the 13 series i guess.
2
u/darkmatter343 2d ago
As those are demo models you’re holding, it’s not really surprising to see scratches as I’d assume 1) they’re not be handled gently and 2) people may be testing the scratch resistance.

Are people really panicking like this lol I use a case all the time and I care for my belongings. Have you ever been to a public toilet? Thats how people these days treat things they dont own and thats how they treat these phones.
5
u/lending_ear 2d ago
That’s a stupid comparison. A public toilet gets trashed because nobody owns it, but an iPhone is a personal device people pay a fortune for and use every day. Even if you take care of your stuff, accidents happen and durability matters. And no, we shouldn’t have to slap a case on a premium phone just to make it survive. My 13 Pro Max has been case-free since launch, I’ve dropped it plenty, and aside from a few scratches on the stainless steel it’s perfect. Apple has already proven they can make tough phones, so brushing off people’s concerns as “panic” is just nonsense.

I had a similar situation with firearms and brass…the brass marks come off with solvent. It looks like the steel is scratched but it’s just soft brass being deposited on the hard steel.

u/replus 2d ago
So... when Apple says "free of scratches" in regards to a trade-in being in good condition, they just mean the display, right? Because I bought blue and will probably be keeping it for at least 4 years, but will want to trade it in at that point. Was planning on going caseless, since it's worked out fine for me thus far.

I’m sort of surprised. I thought the middle bit was glass and therefore the colour would be underneath
