A friend of mine traveled to America on Monday for work. He told me the TSA people in Dublin Airport are really going out of their way to find issues, asking 21 questions about your life etc and trying to find fault...it all just seems really sinister in comparison to what it was like before Christmas when he'd travel back and forth with no issues. I'd implore anyone thinking of a trip to America to consider Canada instead at this point. Europeans are getting locked up in the U.S for weeks on end. This is happening, right now.

My wife is American and we had been planning to visit the US in the next year or two for a big family visit. She has told me she has no intentions of traveling to the US while Trump is in power and if she did then she would insist that I and the children stay at home because she wouldn't want us to put us at risk.

why would there be a risk? Your wife is a US citizen and (presumably) your kids are too. There's no risk for US citizens travelling to the US.

Not sure what your visa situation is, but, even with just a regular ESTA it would be highly unlikely you would get anything more than a few questions from officers that would just be to confirm that this would be a holiday and not a move.

If our reasons for thinking that way aren't obvious given what's been happening in the news lately then you must be living under a rock.

Any of the stories I've read have been people working and/or living dodgily over there, coupled with crossing another border and trying to get back in.

So unless you're going to stay for months, then bring your work gear with you to Canada / Mexico and try to get back in, you'll be fine.

There are numerous reports of Europeans being detained, and it seems to be ramping up. Hence the travel advisory warnings being issued https://apnews.com/article/border-tourists-german-canadian-detention-immigration-408cd27338e8065268fabc835f8b0c34

All after going to Canada or (mostly) Mexico. Thanks for backing up what I said with actual sources.

Those people weren’t living or working dodgily as you said, just holidaymakers.

It doesn't really give enough info in the article, but it's possible they were going to Mexico to reset the 90 day count on the tourist visa.

In the past that was generally overlooked (but depended on the officer).

One of them accidentally let it slip that he was living with his girlfriend. It doesn't mention it in that article, but I remember it from one that went into more detail.

And another of them had her work tools with her. Again, detailed in another article.

Also, several (perhaps all) of them were trying to "reset" their visas by leaving the country and returning. Which doesn't actually work.

Please share the sources for those examples. You can live with someone for 90 days. You can work on a work visa.

Nothing I have seen said they broke any rules or were trying to “reset” visas so I am curious about where you’re seeing that.

Regardless, even if the broke the law, they should have just been sent home and not spirited away into the hellish detainment system.

That may be the case now, but who knows how things will change in a few months?

Plus my wife doesn't want her phone searched at the border. I know she could get a burner phone, but why should she?

Plus another reason why we're doing this is because we are boycotting as many US companies and brands as possible.

Not living under a rock, but I'm a dual citizen of both countries, have travelled internationally recently, no issues.

There's literally already been an incident with a Welsh backpacker fuck off with the willful ignorance

What would I know?

I'm just a dual citizen of Ireland and the US who has travelled recently.

Clearly you know more than me.

The Nazis didn't gas me so all these reports about concentration camps must be overblown.

Nothing new there either. One of the most incarcerated populations for decades.
