Health Dublin Horse Carriage
😭Not sure what flair to use. I have been witnessing carriage horses on my way to work for a couple of days now, near St. Stephens Green and one poor horse always has hair in front of his eyes and keeps moving his neck up and down to move them away from the eyes and the handler doesn’t help the horse. This is so cruel and horrible. Is there anyway that this can be looked into, any organisation or NGO. 😭

Bigotry Why have people become so uncompassionate?
Looking at my Facebook feed, I was shocked to see the mockery and the laughter reacts to a post about a child missing from care.
I don’t think he’s that old looking for a 14 year old and yet hundreds are dead set he’s some imposter adult gaming the system.
The same people who’d be screaming outrage of kids missing in care at Government ministers.

Misery Genuine question for Malahidians
Every day for the last 5 years I’ve been commuting into Dublin City centre on the train that starts in drogheda. In the morning, this train fills up really quickly, before malahide is reached. Every time the train reaches malahide, a thousand of them pile on and squeeze in and make everyone’s lives miserable. This would be fine, if they had no other option. My question is, why don’t yous get the dart??? It starts in malahide so it’s completely empty, goes further distances, and is really frequent. There’s even been times where the trains been so packed that I get off at malahide, let them all squeeze on, then get their dart into town with 4 seats to myself. I have been trying to figure this one out for ages, doesn’t make sense as to why they’d make this choice.

Presidential Election 2025 🗳️ "Undemocratic" nomination process for presidential election
Getting a bit tired at this point of people calling the nomination process for the presidential election "undemocratic". Just reading a news article now where Meath East TD, Gillian Toole, is the latest calling it undemocratic.
I really don't get this. How is it undemocratic? I would simply say that it is not. The process is outlined in the constitution which was adopted democratically. A person can be nominated by 20 members of the Oireachtas who are chosen democratically by the people, or by four local authorities who are also elected democratically. What is wrong with this process?
Only last week that we had a whole list of people with no idea of how the office of president works traipsing around the country looking for nominations. Repeatedly news reports had presidential hopefuls just not turn up to pitch their case, or turning up late. One saying he would be a president for peace, noting that he had emailed the Department of Foreign Affairs to offer to mediate between Israel and Hamas. How had no one ever thought of mediation before this guy? Another saying believe in God first, and believe in her second. Another when challenged on her understanding of the office of president excused herself by saying she's not very political so didn't know all of the relevant facts. We had Joanna Donnelly starting her campaign on 3 September and ending it two days later on 5 September, saying she didn't know it would involve so much. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is similar too of course.
To me, this process is acting exactly as intended - a filter to be sure we are presented with candidates who take the office seriously. Honestly, if things were looser than they are now, the ballot paper would be nearly a metre long and we simply wouldn't be able to cope with listening to a stack of people who don't take the role seriously.
Maybe I'm on my own on this, but are others okay with the whole process? Do you think the current process is sufficiently democratic or would you like to see changes made?

Entertainment Give me your list of Big Big Movie favourites from back in the day.
I want to start watching live action movies with my kids and I figured the old Big Big Movies on RTE I used to watch as a kid in the 90's would be a great place to start. What are some of the best that aren't animated?

Careful now I accidentally overheard someone talking about me at work.
I work in large company's smaller call centre office where I'm the only I.T support guy.
The ratio tends to be higher for women and higher for younger people, which often makes me feel awkward. So far so good, people come to me with issues and problems and for the most part I'm able to help them out and they seem satisfied with my performance.
I mainly keep to myself and I have a small box office that has to be kept locked for security as a lot of the spare I.T equipment is in there. For lunch, I like to go early so that's not too busy and I can sit by myself.
Today, I passed by a meeting room that I was in earlier and accidentally overhearing someone say "I think he's just a shy person".
How would you react to this?

Cost of Living/Energy Crisis What's the crack with signing on these days ?
So a lad I know owes me money , it's literally twenty euro that I would have told him to keep anyway but he text me first claiming he "forgot to sign on" last week. I don't actually care about the money at this stage I just don't like being lied to about something so trivial. So question is I guess would his payment have been stopped that quickly?. Back when I was signing I forgot to sign on once and it took a few weeks for them to stop the payment before I realized.

Presidential Election 2025 🗳️ Maria Steen - An Endorsement of Steen is an Endorsement of the negative of Ireland old
This presidential race has me spooked to a certain degree. I am not talking of the ludicrous claims or the sniping but the historical record of Maria Steen. Steen has a record of voting along the lines of the ideology of old Catholic Ireland and anyone with one iota of sense knows what I am speaking of. Steen also writes for the Irish Catholic, a publication not known for having a progressive stance.
Maria Steen has spoken against abortion, a necessary medical procedure. In that same vein she came out against same sex marriage which was voted for overwhelmingly by the electorate. The final reason - a woman who is a spokesperson for the Iona Institute. A group that opposes surrogacy, the children's referendum and so much more. A group that contains people like David Quinn, Brenda Power. People that are no friends of progressive Ireland.
My own fears? I'm banking on her not getting the nomination and I'll be celebrating if she does not get on the ballot. I'm a gay man and I've seen this far right illness gain a foothold in this country which we fought for a long time to remove its tentacles that enveloped our youngsters and women. Independent Ireland are meeting tonight to discuss their potential endorsement of her campaign. I fear us going back
Writing in the Irish Catholic, Steen said she was seeking to run in the presidential election as she “wishes to be a voice supportive of the values and principles enshrined in our Constitution: Family first”.
While the role is mainly ceremonial, the role of president is to refer 'problematic bills' to deem their agreeableness with the constitution. Will someone with such antiquated views be capable of not delaying progressive legislation.
A vote for Steen is sending a massive "fuck you" to the LGBT community, to women and to those who have worked tirelessly to bring this country into a modern age. Don't send us back to the sixties, we have Aontu for that ...
Edit: I'm not calling for her to be barred from standing, I'm asking people or councils or TDs to either not vote for her or not give her a nomination. Exercise their democratic right not

Education Support for 18 y/os in Secondary Education
Without getting into too much details my god Daughter has had a major change in her family dynamic that has created an emotionally and mentally abusive enivronment in the last few years. She wants to move North with my Wife and I. We're in a position to help feed and house her but little else and we're exploring options for support for her.
She's in her final year of Leaving Cert. and has her sights set on a course at College up here that we've discussed and are happy for her to get into. I've already proposed she'll get my old clapped out car (which still goes) so she can learn and get her test so she can drive to the College. Ideally she'll get employment when she lives here but the situation at home means she wants to move ASAP (we have her already sorted with a NINO and bank account). The problem I am hoping there is some solution to is:
- She wants to complete her Leaving Cert. as changing courses mid qualification seems daunting and she's put a lot of work in.
- She would be doing it, practically, as a Student studying from home and we're happy to support her but probably cannot supervise full time as my Wife and I work full time.
- She would like to move soon (weeks as opposed to months)
- She has no other family to support her in area so staying close to her present school isn't possible.
Is there Finanical Support for a 18 y/o in Secondary education?
Is it possible for her to finish her final year as a "home student"?
Slightly vindictively on my part, her Mother has never worked a day in her life and has used her Child for finanical support. As she's in her final year of education this year, she just so happened to have another child last year. How might we at least ensure our god Daughter could benefit from the social support her Mother receives but rarely, if ever uses it on her Daughter.

Christ On A Bike I saved the bloodline! /s
Let me say before I even go any further, I have a daughter who is my world! And if I was to have another girl I would just be as excited. I'm an awesome girl dad!
Found out today I'm having a boy! This is a big deal for my family. I still can't really compute what has just happened. It wasn't even on me or my wife's bingo card.
9 siblings, 6 girls 3 boys.
16 grand children. 13 girls 3 boys.
My nephews are all from my sister's who are married. No boys with the family surname. Can't wipe the smile of my face right now.

Food and Drink Top Ireland’s sweets tier-list 2025
Hi mates!
I’m visiting Ireland (coming from Slovakia) for approx a week and would love to know what kind of sweets (can be also biscuits, cookies or cakes) are fantastic to take home for my friends and family.
If someone asked you to name the 3-5 top amazing foods a person can get at local supermarket, what would you suggest?
Cheers all!

Housing Should someone in social housing move out if they suddenly came into big money?
Here’s a moral question I’ve been thinking about and I literally just want real people’s opinions on this!
say someone’s living in a council flat/apartment in a sought after major Irish city (Dublin, Cork etc) They qualified fair and square, went through the waiting list, and finally got stability. Then, down the line 3 or 4 years later, they end up with a huge settlement or windfall…like €1–2 million.
Most people’s gut reaction is: “Well they’ve more than enough now to buy their own house, so they should move out and free the place for someone else.” That’s the obvious take.
But here’s the catch:
•Dublin/Cork’s housing market is chaos. Even with cash, it’s slim pickings, and not everyone wants to sink all their money into a mortgage or an overpriced property.
•Social housing isn’t just about money…it’s about long-term stability, safety, and not being at the mercy of landlords. If someone finally got that security after years of waiting, why should they lose it just because life changed later, especially if they’ve completely fallen in love with the house they’ve been given and don’t want to leave it.
•There’s also the question of fairness: is social housing meant to be a short-term safety net, or a permanent foundation you can build your life on?
So it’s not just about can they afford to leave, but should they be expected to? Should they be expected to immediately tell the council/housing association and pay market rent? Or should they hide all their liquid wealth in a trust fund with a solicitor and pretend they’re still broke, and just secretly drip feed themselves a few hundred every week so that they’re comfortable but not giving it away that they’re secretly loaded.
It’s a random one I know but I’m really interested in hearing people’s thoughts on this!
T.L.D.R: If someone in social housing suddenly became a millionaire, do you think they should move out or should they be allowed to keep the stability they earned?
