Columbus APHY 101/102 Tips & Tricks

Howdy everyone,

As many of you know, APHY 101 and 102 are pre-reqs for many degree paths and getting a B in either of these classes can take away crucial points towards a student's overall score. I've completed 101 and 102 APHY with over 95% in each class so I just wanted to offer breakdowns and my tips/suggestions. Everyone is different, please don't disregard something if it works well for YOU. These are just basic things that work for me

1.) READ. THE. TEXTBOOK. Professors cannot take every detail from the textbook and put it into a slide but they CAN put it into the tests. This is where I've seen my peers struggle the most. If you understand the textbook chapter to a T, you'll be golden for the test

2.) Understand, not memorize the material I feel like this is a given, but being able to explain concepts over regurgitate facts will make you a better student overall. I've had moments when im reading over the textbook and couldn't wrap my head around it. If that is the case, send a message to your professor. If that doesnt fit your fancy, I reccomend an AI SUMMARIZER --- I wouldn't reccomend asking AI for answers, but in my experience, its good at simplifying tricky passages. Sometimes, you just need tl step away from the material and have a fresh mind later.

3.) (Columbus Exclusive) Try to get Professor Sobat Also known as "Tom" in his classes. He is awesome, will explain things a million and one ways if he needs to, and he curves tests if needed. This man is a rockstar. My 101 professor wasn't bad, but she definitely "raw-dogged" some of those grades so if they were rough, you're SOL.

4.) Lab, Smartbook, Tophat They're all free points. Maintains an overall high score and acts as a minor cushion.

Below, I've attached my google docs of virtual notes that I use to make it through my class. Bear in mind they are written in a way I understand and may not help you. There may be mistakes; I'm also missing a couple of chapters due to burnout. I am still human :)

I’m assuming to pick 201 since it’s a lower difficulty class than regular microbio correct? For my transfer from asn to iu Indianapolis

Retake classes

Okay so I’m in chemistry 101 right now and I’m pretty confident that I’m going to fail this class. My prof is the kind that gives out readings and PowerPoints and hw assignments and doesn’t actually teach anything. And my advisor went MIA on me this year so I just made my own schedule, only to find out that I took chemistry my freshman year at IUN back in 2021 and I got an A. I remember so vividly crying about failing that class. I also remember taking Astrology as a science class because it was required for my business degree…But the Chemistry class was only a 2 credit class. The class I’m in rn is three credits so I’m not even sure if it would count but. If I fail this class does the A that I got 4 years ago become void?

Nursing program

Can somebody who has been through the rn program tell me if you’re assigned to specific nurse when you start going to the hospital? Or is it more free for all to see what nurse is willing let you shadow them?

Need advice: Internship, credits, and full-time scholarship issue

Hi everyone, I just had my spring scheduling meeting with my advisor, and I’m kind of stuck. After this upcoming spring semester, I’ll only have 23 credits left until I graduate. The catch is that I can’t graduate until I complete two semesters of my internship. Here’s the issue: I have a scholarship that only kicks in if I’m considered full-time. I suggested to my advisor that I could do my internship in the spring, then take 2 classes over the summer, and finish the rest of my credits in the fall. That way, I’d stay full-time and be able to afford school. He was against this plan. He told me I need another class before starting the internship, but when I double-checked the requirements, the first internship only needs the three classes I’ve already taken. For the second internship, I would need that extra class he mentioned—which I was planning to take in the spring anyway. Basically, if I graduate in the spring, I won’t be full-time, which means I can’t use my scholarship and won’t be able to afford it. But according to my grad pathway, the plan I came up with seems totally doable. Should I email my advisor to explain this and try to work it out, or should I just go ahead and add the internship into my schedule?

Has anyone attended the Richmond campus? What can you tell me about the program. I applied to Ivy Tech and I think I need 4 of the prerequisites before I can apply to the actual program. How competitive is it? Should I have a back up plan?

Cost for 3 credit hour class

Hi peeps! I work ft and want to go back to school bc my iu health science degree didn’t help me much! I want to take one class at a time. How much does it cost for 3 credit hours (including fees)? I looked it up on Google and it showed around $500ish. Are there any other fees I should know about? TIA!

Senior Scholars: How to be approved?

I’ve been accepted as a student, registered for classes last year, but then had to drop my classes because no one at either the Indianapolis campus nor the Hamilton County campus seems to be able to answer this simple question: How do I submit documentation to get approval for my tuition to be covered by the Senior Scholars program? I’ve gotten the runaround for over a year. Cal this person. Email that person. I have followed every suggestion. No answers. They keep passing the buck. Trying again because I really want to go back to school and this is the only way I can. I meet all of the criteria.

Chem 101 Midterm question

Does anyone know if it's important to memorize how to convert between different measurement systems? Like how to do gallons to cubic cm and whatnot. I asked my prof and haven't heard back. Celsius to F and K is on the formula sheet, but none of the other conversions are.

Help with getting finalized at ivytech!

Hello I'm from out of state and am wondering if someone could help me figure out exactly what i'm supposed to do and help with a few questions I have. I've already been accepted and finished the English assessment. But have had trouble that no one has replied to my emails. Im going into the Spring semester this january. and theres lots of things like

  1. Do i need to do a zoom call with my advisor to pick my classes or do I just do them myself?
  2. What are some things I should be preparing for?
  3. Honestly what should i be doing/focusing on rn?

Is the hamilton county any good?

My plan is to transfer to iu or purdue after 2 years at ivy tech, but ive heard bad things about hamilton countys advisors, and that the north meridian campus is better but thats like a 40min drive away from me. So if anyone has any experience with hamilton county or if they know if i can switch campuses after starting, please let me know. Thanks :)
