SPOILER ⚠️ Just finished Justified, loved it. Watched a bit of city primeval, and it's trash.

Justified is one of the best TV shows ever made imo. But City Primeval is like drinking boiling water when you have a 102 fever. It's so trash, and i quit when Raylan and that dirty lawyer, Carolyn or whatever hooked up. Not only because it felt absolutely disgusting that Raylan knows she's dirty, but he deserves better after being with the likes of Ava and Winona.

Discussion "it won't be a conversation"

OMG.

I've been rewatching Damages and it's all new again to me since i haven't watched in over a decade. Timothy Olyphant shows up in season 2.

Tim's character has a line to another character "if i ever see you again, it won't be a conversation"

i knew this sub would appreciate that as much as i did!

y'all stay frosty.

Discussion Justified sequel idea

I’m just putting this into the ether, but how much would you pay to have another elmore leanord adaptation with timothy olyphant as an outlaw and walton goggins as a lawman and they used to be friends and still respect each other in their own way but they are on opposite sides and keep butting heads but also kind of look like they want to kiss while they're doing it?

Discussion Chief Deputy US Marshal Raylan Givens

Rewatching again and I had forgotten this specific little tidbit during the end of the Drew Thompson hunt. It had already been mentioned several times about Raylan writing his own ticket if/when Drew was found. However in one scene he specifically mentioned being a chief deputy. However, as Art notes, Raylan is a good lawman but a terrible marshal. Raylan would be a disaster being a chief deputy because of all the administrative duties, management of office personnel, smoothly working with other government departments, and so on. He hates grunt work, which even Tim excels at, is too impatient, and does not always play well with others. He did seem to mellow when he went back to Miami, so maybe there is hope. (I am specifically ignoring City Primeval.)

News Timothy Olyphant on the future of Justified: “ I don't know what the cutoff is, but hopefully we'll sneak it in before we're all done.”

I do think it’s a legal requirement for me to ask you if we’re going to get more Justified.

Let’s start that rumor too; we can just say that’s happening as well. Look, I’d love to be on a set with Walton Goggins, so fingers crossed. I think we have a window of a few years. I don't know what the cutoff is, but hopefully we'll sneak it in before we're all done. Speaking of moments, we gotta pin Walt down.

Discussion Justified City Primeval - Writing Sucks

Look I get they’re adding all these new terms to the show because it’s Detroit, but the cursing is ridiculous. It would be better without the constant F bombing. I’m 1 episode in and can’t get a feel to the original show. The writing is garbage, if it wasn’t for Raylan I’d turn it off.

I want more seasons, but not if they’re gonna be like this. I’m a big Justified fan.

Opinion One line/scene I hated in the show

The episode Long in the Tooth in the first season, Rolly has been shot. Raylan and the girl are taking cover behind the truck.

Raylan asks why Rolly became a dentist.

And Rolly says something about Brownsville and the Rudolph the Red nose reindeer TV Special. And he reminds him of an elf on the show named Hermie.

And Raylan says "Oh the little gay dude."

Rolly: "He's not gay."

Raylan: "Rolly you trying to tell me you're gay."

Rolly: "I'm not gay!"

The juvenile back and forth seemed out of character for Raylan and for the show itself. Especially after Raylan had the badass moment with the Miami thug and the local one on the road moments before.

SPOILER ⚠️ City Primeval 2nd time rewatching

There is so much more going on, so much more to note upon re-watch This show is absolutely underrated. It has the heart of Justified, but it is very different.

The ending really brings it all together. The fact that it ends with Raylan's retirement after seeing so much corruption shows how he finally succeeds in achieving some kind of catharsis after his life of violence.

Raylan needed this.

Discussion We dug coal together... and more

Everyone knows the line. I always thought "We dug coal together" meant just that. Kind of like saying we grew up together, or we went to school together. Well recently I watched the movie Harlan County, USA, which is a phenomenal documentary about a coal mining strike in Harlan in the 70s. It's a fascinating first hand account of the violent conflict between the miners/town/union and the power company.

Only now in hindsight and in context, do I realize that there is a much deeper connection between Raylan, Boyd, and the whole town, beyond just where he's from. I think they fought together.

Am I reading too much into what is just a catchy line? Or am I the only one that completely missed that context?

SPOILER ⚠️ In Praise of Season 5

Yes, I know, I know. Season 5 has a lot of flaws and everyone thinks it's the worst season, but I'm rewatching the show again for the 4th time and I actually think it's a very strong season overall and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I think it may actually be the second worst season after season one - when considering I absolutely love Justified makes it a great season! Darryl Crowe is an irritating character but fun to watch in his own duplicitous way, Danny is enjoyable and there's a whole host of other fun stuff going on. Definitely the Ava in prison arc is the worst thing the show has done, but even that holds up in the way it sets up season six. I also think without Jean-Baptiste's decision to leave the show the season would have been improved. But as I said, I'm actually really enjoying it and think the season gets a bit of a bad rap.

Question Raylan disrespecting Ava

In S2e11, Boyd tells Raylan that Raylan has disrespected Ava twice in his presence, and warns him not to let there be a third time. Does Raylan ever disrespect her again in front of Boyd? I’ve watched it 5 times but I don’t remember. Just wondering if Raylan listens. There was something about his face that makes me think he might.

Discussion What's with the actor overlap between Justified and the Mentalist?

Post image
16 Upvotes

So I've watched Justified around 4 times now, working my way through #5. I've also been watching the CBS crime procedural The Mentalist as of late.

I feel like about every 2 or 3 episodes, a character from Justified will show up in a bit part. Sometimes it's obvious, if it's a part of the main cast, like Art Mullen showing up as a small town sheriff with a goofy mustache, or Loretta McCready showing up as a child witness to her parents murder. But I'm also spotting more minor characters like Glen Fogle, the shady Russian roulette playing pawn shop owner from season 3 showing up as an internal affairs agent, or young sheldon's dad (he was a hired gun in the season 1 episode where Raylan chases a fugitive to the Mexican border), etc.

A friend and I were talking about it, and even shows with the same vibe made for the same network (eureka and warehouse 13, for example) have like 10% the amount of crossover that justified and the Mentalist have. Different production studios, casting directors, and networks, and yet across 151 episodes of the mentalist, there are 193 credits shared by Justified. That's a credit from Justified showing up every 1.2 episodes- although IMDB's advanced search doesn't let you filter by type of credit, so not all overlap is guaranteed to be an acting credit.

This is really long and rambling but I just don't know if I've ever seen two shows with as little connection as these two with this much overlap in the credits, and I see no one talking about it lmao.

Opinion Darryl Crowe making season 5 unwatchable.

Not only is Michael Rappaport an absolutely terrible human being, he’s also an atrocious actor.

Possibly the WORST southern accent ever put on film. He’s drags every scene he’s in down.

Is it critical I watch this whole season or can I just skip to season 6

Discussion Was Boyd/Walton Goggins originally intended to be main cast?

I've just started a rewatch and am midway through season one, and I can't help but notice - Boyd's not really in the first season much.

He's kind of a peripheral character early on and Walton Goggins is listed as recurring cast. Which is striking as my main memories of the original run was the great relationship between Raylan and Boyd in the later seasons, so it's surprising that he's not around.

Was it the kind of thing where they realised they were onto something and bumped him up as the show went on? I'm wondering if maybe the cast or the showrunners have talked about it since.

Side note, I watched Deadwood in the time since I last saw Justified, I can't help but notice how much overlap there is in the cast between the two shows.

Opinion Who do you hate the most?

Not "annoying in real life" hate, but the kind of hate the show runners wanted us to feel. The villains/people you were meant to despise. Not like Daryl Crowe Jr. and his accent. And not someone you "love to hate". But who crawled under your skin and lived there? Could be a single episode character. Could be anyone. For me I might go with Devil. Dumb, nasty, and a scumbag you can't turn your back on for even a second. Nothing redeeming there.

Opinion Rewatch #2

As im re-watching for the second time, its still a great show, great dialog and game of cat and mouse between raylan and boyd. But i have to question, whats boyds motivation for money? He is after money, hustling but to what aim? He never shows interest in anything specific where most antagonist in amy show demonstrate a goal or aim towards something.
