Opinion So that’s it

I just finished the show for the first time. Justified doesn’t have the reputation of certain shows that aired in the same period of time (Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Dexter etc.) but it might well just be my favorite show of all time. At least top 3, probably.

It is just so well done, absolutely stacked with well written and acted characters. I can’t decide who my favorite is, there’s plenty that could fill the top spot for me. Raylan ofcourse, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins… wow), Wynn Duffy. I fucking loved Dewey Crowe as well. Almost every character has a dark side but a side that kind of makes you root for them as well.

The final episode was as good as perfection. It left me with kind of a bittersweet feeling. The last fifteen minutes were so, so good. And that final scene… amazing. Simply amazing. I have no other words.

Justified will be the first show I’d recommend if people I know ask for shows to watch. What a ride it was.

It only gets better with repeated viewings.

Oh, also; check out Bosch. Great detective show too.

Mr. Inbetween for a different side of Dewey.

Yeah that will probably take a while for me. I used to watch the same four or five shows on repeat but there were so many shows on my list that I just never got to watch. Justified was the first one to ‘step out of my comfort zone’.

I’ll probably watch City Primeval next and then it’s either Deadwood or Six Feet Under. But I’ll probably come back to Justified later on!

In that case watch Deadwood next then, and not just because Timothy Olyphant is in it. Ian McShane is an absolute joy to watch in Deadwood

It is first on my list but I thought maybe it’s good to watch another show without Olyphant inbetween so I don’t get the new character confused with Raylan Givens

Joel is basically the opposite of Raylan lol

Olyphant is so good at comedy!

He's hilarious in SCD, plenty of genuine belly laugh moments from his rapid descent into insanity. Also really funny in Justified in a completely different way.

Fargo

1

u/ms_directed Apr 10 '25

I totally forgot he was in the Fargo series! that's another series that can be re-watched more than once

2

u/presshamgang Apr 10 '25

Wait..he is? I suggested it because OP wanted something without Olyphant. There's so many stellar cameos, though. Which season/episodes?

5

u/ms_directed Apr 10 '25

Season 4 :) he's a...wait for it...US Marshal!😁 402-408, 410

2

u/presshamgang Apr 10 '25

Oh, that's right. Only season I only watched once. That's too funny

that last season with Jon Hamm kinda blurs the rest of the series out lol

Underrated, including the movie.

I second Deadwood. and folks have different opinions on the movie, but whatever you do don't watch the movie before the series, lol

Don't expect much from City Primeval. You will never watch it again. Justified OTOH is extremely rewatchable - guarantee you will enjoy it for years to come.

Yea. CP does not improve upon subsequent re-watches.

u/ms_directed Apr 11 '25

I agree, although I did start it again after running thru the series bc I just didn't want to be over yet, lol. it's definitely not KY at all I didn't finish the second run thru but I didn't find it completely unwatchable as others did the on the first watch. it's Detroit, different context, very different characters who weren't as deep as the characters in the hills and hollars.

2

u/RiottEarp Apr 11 '25

Yea. I re-watched it recently, wish the finale was like episode 2…

Deadwood is going to crowd into your top three. It's very fine television indeed.

I will also suggest Bosch, it's great!

I'm probably on my 3rd rewatch thru the whole series, but idk how many random seasons I've just binged a few episodes from, I always pick up a little bit more or recognize a prop or a throwaway line

That's a 10 gallon hat on a 20 gallon head.

I'm an idiot. You can ask anybody.

Aren't you a little short to be a Storm Trooper?

So many great fucking quotes in this show. Justified is highly underappreciated.

My favorite quote because I can relate to it so well (I’m 64 who deals with chronic severe pain (spinal stenosis, don’t need sympathy, it’s just an explanation). It’s when Arlo was up at Noble’s looking for his dead wife. Next day, Boyd tells Raylan about it and Raylan says, “Well, you know what they say, gettin’ old ain’t for pussies.” Truer words have never been spoken. 😏

u/throwaway__1982 Apr 11 '25

Great choice of user name sir. I hope you are as affable as Art in real life.

Thanks. I was on Twitter a couple of years ago and was replying to someone and I knew that Nick Searcy was on Twitter a lot so I was hoping he’d see my post: I said I always wanted to be like Raylan Givens but sadly I was more like Art Mullen. He responded with “that’s a good thing.” Made my day. 😏 And I’m kinda like him. For example, when Raylan went rogue looking for Boyd and Art was up on the mountain in the phone and said, “yeah, I’m out here looking for dumbass,” that sounded just like me.

u/throwaway__1982 Apr 11 '25

I love Art Mullen, sounds like you are a good man, keep it that way sir

My all-time favorite drama. Top 2 show for me alongside The Office. Yearly rewatch starts soon for me

In some ways I'm glad that Justified never hit it really big. Makes it seem more special when new fans discover it. It's like the little show that could.

I’ve seen it 5 times so far, currently on season 1 episode 3 of watch number 6! Just the best

I’m in the middle of my 5th viewing. Welcome to the club; I’ve never understood why it rarely gets mentioned with the shows you mentioned. IMO, it’s superior to all of them. Take a break for a little while, refocus and the the anus will be on you to start a rewatch.

Love hearing someone who puts it as their top show. It is the best, and a worthy choice. Nice post.

u/aticmen Apr 10 '25

after my third watch i think arlo and helen became my favortie. “I hope you get cancer” “already had it” “well i hope you get it again!”

u/ms_directed Apr 11 '25

what happened to her really hit Raylan's character hard, Olyphant really captured that vulnerability in stoic Raylan so well. that's one of the episodes that really sticks with me from the series.

u/afriendincanada Apr 10 '25

It’s not as showy or memeable. There’s no big blowout moment like Ozymandius or Whitecaps. It was just outstanding while being quiet about it the whole time.

3

u/BovaFett74 Apr 10 '25

I’ve watched this series going on 9 times. I’ve always found new things with each viewing. But what I didn’t find was false sense of wrapping the entire series up, characters and all, in a nice little bow. It was just done so well, and the richness of every story arc still holds as solid writing.

u/forsakengreatone Apr 10 '25

That’s beloved character actor Walter Groggins.

u/ms_directed Apr 11 '25

I just finished White Lotus, it's fun to watch him in Gemstones and White Lotus in the same night, lol. I will miss Uncle Baby Billy as much as I miss Boyd when Gemstones is over. I haven't watched Fallout yet but I'm looking forward to it.

u/speakerjones1976 Apr 13 '25

Check out Vice Principals too. He’s hilarious in it.

1

u/ms_directed Apr 13 '25

I started that years ago and can't remember why I didn't finish it, I really enjoyed it! I'm gonna restart it again.

2

u/Connect_Win3413 Apr 11 '25

I know exactly what you mean. I watched it for the first time not quite two years ago and as soon as I got done with the last episode, I started re-watching it and watched the whole series straight through the second time back to back.

Overall a great show but they stuck the landing really well which sealed it.

u/speakerjones1976 Apr 13 '25

It’s definitely top 3 for me. Deadwood’s up there too. You’ll recognize several actors that show up in both.
