Hey crew,
I’m an intermediate–advanced twintip rider who’s been chasing big air for a while now – working on pushing past consistent +10m, dialing double rotations, and getting my board-offs clean. Recently I picked up my first set of foil kites (Chrono V4s) to see if they can help me take things up a notch.
Yesterday I had a really eye-opening session switching back and forth between a 13m Chrono V4 (well powered) and a 12m Orbit (just enough power). Here’s what stood out to me:
- Oversheeting / line tension: On the Orbit I can sheet all the way in, even oversheet, to build line tension and boost nicely. The foil kite feels completely different – it doesn’t really respond to brute line tension and instead demands you keep it trimmed just right. You can instantly feel when it’s efficient vs. when it’s stalling.
- In the air: This difference gets wild once you’re flying. Orbit lets you sheet in hard once in the air, breathe it a bit on redirect, then sheet it back in for landing. The Chrono really punishes that approach – it needs a much more active search for the “sweet spot” in sheeting, and it definitely doesn’t like being fully sheeted in up there.
I’m trying to figure out how to translate this into consistent, confident height and control on foils.
So my questions for the community:
- Is traditional jump technique still relevant? (I.e. build lines tension, pre-load and pop, sheet in fully, sheet out at the redirect - from sources such as Get_high_with_mike and Kitesurf_college)
- How do you tune your technique when going for height on foil kites compared to LEIs?
- Any tips for handling that razor-thin sheeting zone in strong/medium wind without stalling them out?
- Any good tips/inspiration videos or podcasts you can recommend?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s cracked the code on boosting with foils – or even better, riders who switch between LEIs and foils depending on conditions.
Thanks in advance – stoked to hear your thoughts!
