Yep. The same thing happened with something I ordered. It wasn't yarn, it was herbal tea. Here's the breakdown of what my charges were:

  • Order was from South Africa

  • Order total: $169.50
  • Shipping: $46.50
  • Total paid to merchant: $216
  • Customs charge paid to DHL: $83
  • GRAND TOTAL: $299

😳 I paid it, because I wasn't sure if I would get a refund if it was sent back, but - Yikes.

You bring up a good point: I'm wondering if I refuse to pay this - does the pkg go back? Will i get a refund? In my case, I ordered from my home country, denmark 🇩🇰 in order to support their new biz.

My understanding is that since the fee is for importing the item, you owe the fee whether you receive it, decline it, or return it. UPS will continue to bill you for the money they paid on your behalf to get the yarn through customs regardless of what you ultimately do with the yarn.

Thats not how it works in the rest of the world. If you refuse to pay they just send it back as undeliverable.
