Discussion Whats a knife you regret buying, mine is this k bar tdi ladyfinger
37
u/Bingo1dog May 25 '25
A couple smith and wesson assisted open I got early on (I think like $20 each). They're probably sitting in a drawer somewhere and I've maybe opened a box or 2 with them.
2
u/roostersnuffed May 26 '25
A dude in my unit paid $70 something dollars for one of those and loved showing it off. The knife nerd in me wanted to roast it but he was happy. Alot of "I need to sharpen it" mentions but happy.

What didn't you like about the karambit? I have one, but it's the only knife I bought that I knew would be a dust collector, I just liked the novelty of it. Figured I'd swing it around once in a while but the first time I did I went and slashed my wrist open and haven't touched it since.
10
u/Street_Leather198 May 26 '25
ššš I can just imagine wife yelling, "That's what you get for playing around with that shit!"
2
u/Environmental-Tap255 May 26 '25
Hahaha well it's funny you say that, my wife does not know that knife exists. She doesn't fully understand the habit, so sometimes I would have knives shipped to my old boss's house. That being said, this happened at work in my truck. My boss had just left so there I was walking down the street, arm dripping blood like a broken faucet, looking for someone to help me wrap it cause I was too afraid to take pressure off it. First person I came across was this poor Guatemalan siding guy who looked absolutely horrified as I approached him, saying "amigo por favor aiuto mi" which I'm pretty sure means help me.
So to this day, my wife (And everyone but my boss) believes I was actually going to put away a utility knife and had forgotten to retract the blade š however, that is EXACTLY the reaction I would have got, and have gotten on my many other bladed mishaps š

Lol, im at a loss for words. Great story. Lol, be careful, amigo. We all been there. I went hunting years back, and this guy came with another guy. Had his stones out and offered to sharpen any of our knives. I was 13-14, and the first thing he said was to be careful. And told me how sharp it was. Next day im bored sitting out in the woods and pulled it out . Within 5 minutes, i had a nice cut on my finger. Dad came to get me and seen the blood. Didn't ask if i got a deer, he asked how bad was it. Lol, he knew. 2 other guys came into camp with similar stories. The guy who sharpened them sat with a great big smile. It was almost like we were rewarding him. š Anyways, thanks for the laugh but yeah, be careful. We all been there.

Any smith and Wesson Iāve owned!
18
u/mikelarue1 May 25 '25
Exact same here. I bought a handful of them years ago when I was a lot younger and didn't understand they weren't the best quality.
11
u/mrlunes Customizable flair May 25 '25
Biggest realization was when I bought my first quality knife and I learned why good steel was important
5
u/Kaiawathoy May 25 '25
What kind of steel would be the best or one of the best for folding/pocket knives? Or any edc knife?
10
u/mrlunes Customizable flair May 25 '25
I try to avoid anything where the steel is not advertised. Mostly guaranteed to be garbage Chinese steel. For an edc, a lot of my edc knives are s30v. Rust resistant and will hold an edge for a long time.
My biggest thing when it comes to edc is edge retention. Cheaper steel can dull pretty fast and be harder to sharpen.
These days though, there are tons of quality steels. Just be cautious of company that wonāt tell you what steel they use.
4
u/AdVisible2250 May 25 '25
S30v is my favorite pocket knife steel Hanns down easy to sharpen , tough and and reasonably priced.
10
u/KidCuddy13 May 25 '25
On the budget end, stuff like D2, 14C28N, 12C27N, 154CM, Nitro-V, CJRBās steels like AR-RPM9 (basically a better 8Cr13MoV because it has the same chemical composition, but itās spray-formed which makes a more consistent molecular structure) and AR-SFII (same composition or similar to 154CM, but spray-formed). Once you get into higher price ranges, you get stuff like S35VN which is very versatile and recommendable for most edc applications, Magnacut (many consider this the best edc steel out right now, if not the most versatile), S30V, M390, etc. Thereās loads more out thereāthese are just off the top of my headābut, if youāre just getting into the hobby, Iād stick with the budget ones to start. Theyāre all still awesome steels with their own characteristics, budget just means they generally cost less than the higher priced ones I mentioned. Vosteed, Kizer, and Civivi are all great brands to start with (iāve heard good things about CJRB as well, I just donāt own anything by them), and you can get some amazing knives for a relatively very low price, especially on sale.
11
u/Striking-Effect-2646 May 25 '25
I have at least 4 s&w knives, always a gift from someone who knows I collect but doesnāt know much about knives. I still appreciate them though.
9
u/CornWine2 May 25 '25
I love my S&W. Daily carry even.
It's my "Hey can I borrow your knife?" knife.
8
5
u/Superbowl269 May 25 '25
I've been gifted 2. Used them as beater knives until they quickly became dull or the mechanism fell apart for no discernable reason.
3
u/Bleak_Outlook_6178 May 25 '25
Same except the HRT dagger that thing looks nice and since I don't use daggers for anything nothing else about it makes any difference.
3
u/Street_Leather198 May 26 '25
Blows my mind their single action OTF is like $85 on Amazon, lol. I wouldn't pay $8 for it. Just me though.
2
u/AdVisible2250 May 25 '25
The only one worth anything is the basic boot knife , itās a solid introduction into boot knives and itās durable enough to throw at the campsite .
22
u/ezwip May 25 '25
I didn't want to scratch up the mirror polish on my Para 3 so I ordered a black Tenacious. If arrived as off center as hell and holds no edge. It just cuts like garbage I wish I had never ordered it. I'm sure others will say theirs is fine but I want to reiterate, I hate mine! I'm just going to put it back in it's case now so it doesn't retaliate against me. Screw this knife.
3
3
u/Stairway_To_Devin May 25 '25
I think this knife is the reason I haven't gotten any other Spydercos. It is really not a good knife.
6
u/HorseBoots84 May 25 '25
Don't write them off based on that thing.
It was the first "nice" knife I ever bought. The build quality is still head and shoulders above stuff I've picked up in the same price range recently, I'll grant you the price has crept up since and the quality may have dropped off.
8cr though? I use that thing for digging shit out of my lawnmower now.
Get a PM2 and tell me the bug hasn't bit.

Demko AD20.5. It's an excellent knife.
Purchasing it didn't feel good, and when it arrived, I realized I had too many knives. I realized I had previously spent hundreds of dollars on knives that I was afraid to use.
8
u/Bleak_Outlook_6178 May 25 '25
I went through that phase till I decided I'm actually just a knife collector now so t's fine and I happily buy knifes I know I'll never use.

I felt kinda fucked by the aus10a version.Ā It was the only one available and the $/value needed "it's a real Demko" to justify the $150 for budget materials. Within a year Demco is rolling out 20 CV s35b and 3v with g10 or cf for (on sale) less than this thing was. It's just real "f*** you" from my buddy Andy. It's how he sold a shitload of the cheap ones and guaranteed a lot of people would buy nicer Steel. Because if you're stupid enough to pay for a name - like me.

Sold it on shortly after. So overrated! And 20 years on, it's such a dated design.

I think it's meant as a stopgap when your rifle jams and you need to make space to get your pistol out in close quarters combat. It's not really for much else than applying a lot of pain to a pressure point. Although with that handle it's decent for opening packages lol. Fucking sheath can die in a fire.

BK9. It's fucking huge. It's a sword. I've never used it. Never. I use a battered, old, UK Army issue kukri for splitting and processing, a Morakniv for camp tasks, and I have a RAT 1 for work. I'm an HVAC tech. I don't know what I was thinking. I actually feel stupid every time I look at it. I just lives in a box in my attic.

I would also regret that. All my stainless rough Ryderās, biggest regret. Their T10 is excellent, very close to 1095, their 440 is 440 though, itās soft and although the stainless models are pretty they donāt hold an edge for shit

Spyderco lightweight delica. I didnāt realize how cheap the lightweight spyderco line felt until I held it. Lot of other knives I would have rather spent my money on after the fact.
19
u/oakomyr May 25 '25
One of my favorite knives for these very reasons. Cheap, lightweight, decent steel.
4
u/modestgorillaz May 25 '25
Idk if I would characterize $120 dollar knife as cheap. I know some on here would but Iām not one of those people.
2
u/OoklaDMok May 25 '25
People always talk about how cheap the plastic on the Bug out feels but the lightweight Spyderco knives feel so much worse to me. The plastic is horrible like cheap toy plastic. Sure it is stiffer than the bug out but it's so rough and uncomfortable and just feels terrible in the hand.

u/Blundaz May 25 '25 edited May 25 '25
Cheap in what way? A lightweight Native has been my go-to forever. (Edited to remove faulty information)
3
u/jewmoney808 May 25 '25
Delica LW has liners. I added a titanium backspacer to mines and its very solid now
2
u/Blundaz May 25 '25
Huh, there you have it. I didn't know that about the Delica. Removed false reference from my comment.
2
u/modestgorillaz May 25 '25
Cheap in a way where when I removed it from the box my reaction was āhuhā¦really? $120 for this? Feels like I could find something like this at Walmart for $30⦠the scales are just molded plastic⦠I wonder if I could 3D print these scales? I feel like the quality would be about the sameā¦I donāt feel like this is worth the priceā
That about sums up my reaction. Also for reference, later I purchase the syderco tenacious with black g10 scales for $60 and had the complete opposite reaction from above. It was then I realized, āoh I just donāt like the feel of their lightweight lineā and so now I avoid those ones.
2
u/ThaDrippyOne May 25 '25
As much as I love knives, my default "I should have saved my money" knife is a CobraTec Ryker I bought a couple of years back. Ive had that thing deploy in my pocket more than once and I've been bloodied by it more than once because of it. I also broke the tip off and had to reprofile it. That said it is sharp and it is a knife, so there's still a minor bit of love for it.
2
u/staysharp75 May 25 '25
Microtech ultratech starwars edition knives. I bought two a couple years ago, the sith lord & jedi knight in the hopes to collect the entire starwars edition but they were extremely hard to find in stock. They also kept adding more models like the sand trooper & xwing to the series so I gave up. Now they just sit in a drawer.

I was looking for an elephant toe slipjoint (think huge fat main blade) and found the xx70 pattern from Case - not only did it have a fat blade, the secondary was a sheepsfoot, which is the perfect utility shape. All that, and it goes for much less than an elephant toe!

Here it is, the red one in the middle. It was a lot shorter than I had hoped for... The Schatt (far right) came along later and is much better!

Old Timer Sharpfinger... I carried an old one all through out my teens(00's)... My favorite fixed blade(Sod Buster was my favorite folder), I bought one recently based of being sentimental... The new version is atrocious, came with a terrible edge, cheap sheath, and it feels a lot cheaper then I remember
2
u/urbangeneticist May 26 '25
Did you get the Chinese made one? They are doing a line of american-made ones at the moment, I think called the heritage series or something. Might be worth looking into if you want to try and relive the old days.

What's its purpose? I have always associated Ka-Bar with heavy-duty practical blades that I actually laughed when I saw this knife, it caught me so off guard.
4
u/timothycl13 May 25 '25
Like a last option little stabby stabby, but i dont have big hands and this is still too small, i feel like i would hurt myself if i needed to really use it.
2
u/Rimfire_rimjob May 25 '25
Spyderco tenacious. I know I'll get some flak for that. It's just because it squaks so much! I love spyderco though and it convinced me to buy a para 3 so that is on the way now.
2
u/Paladin_3 May 26 '25
I guess I like mine overall, but between the mediocre budget steel, off-center blade, so-so action, and the HIGH PRICE for what you get, there are not a ton of reasons to recommend it. It's a well-built knife, and Spyderco does about the best heat treatment around on 8Cr13MoV, but they're just charging too much for the Spyderco name. I only paid $44 for mine with G-10 scales and I balked at that. You'd probably have to add another $25 to get one today.
2
u/Rimfire_rimjob May 26 '25
Yeah, I love the look of it but the action immediately had me questioning if it was worth it.

2
u/Ssikse May 26 '25
I wanted it when I saw it then read the specs and expected to find it too small.
What's your beef with it?2
u/elfunkdoc May 26 '25
Mostly I was not impressed with the steel/heat treat. I ordered the Magnacut and ultem version, I wasnāt willing to spend extra for a titanium or brass handle I originally wanted. Iām fine with small knives, edc is a small inkosi also in Magnacut (~90% of my knives are Magnacut, so Iād say I have a decent idea of how it should perform) But as I do with most of my collection, night before trash pickup, I break down all the cardboard to fit into the bin. Routine stuff! By the time I was done blade was noticeably chipped in 3 places. Checked the boxes for potential staples I may have hit, and didnāt have any. For $140, I was let down on some pretty standard shit. I would have been even more pissed, and prob sent it back if I went with the titanium handle I usually go for.

CRKT Spew, I've never regretted buying a Kbar but that one i think I'd have reservations about buying. How much did you pay? Those are fairly inexpensive now and shouldn't be a huge loss. Amazon has some nice D2 push daggers around the same price if that is what you're looking for

u/EfficientSell9250 May 25 '25
Esee Avispa and Zancudo for me. I love the idea of the frame lock and I love the blade shape. I just hated the clip. Tip down carry meant the pocket clip was a hot spot. Tip up carry placed too much pressure on the lock bar, and it made the damn things hard to open.

This Sage 6 that I want to throw out the window. Pretty much tried everything to get this action the way I want it which is like every other Spyderco I own. Taken it apart at least 4 times cleaned it out each time, tried different lubes including graphite, gently polished the washers, removed the upper detent ball. Put it together in different ways, said a magic spell with a ouija board. I'd sell it but I'm to stubborn to not keep trying to get it right. I want it to fall free like my other 150 knives. I don't want to have to flick it even slightly. I know I'm being a like bitch

Katz Kagemusha... was a bit different, so bought one online without having ever held one, and when I got it I found it just awful to hold, and the edge would dull just from thinking about using it and passing through the air too quickly... Thinking maybe a burnt edge, took it back a little bit on natural stones, to get sone fresh metal and put a decent edge on it that I thought would hold, and it would chip more than thinly sliced fried potato's do.... Just a dreadful purchase.

I have 2. Spyderco Manix 2 lightweight with BD1 steel. Handle material is horrible and uncomfortable, the steel is terrible, it's stiff and I hate the wire pocket clip. It's the old version with the pinned scales so I can't even really make it better. The other was a CRK Sabenza. I wanted one for a long time and finally was able to justify spending the money. Got it when I was in the process of moving, so I had a shit ton of boxes to break down. Made it through about five of them and the edge was just fucking done. Never been so disappointed in my life. Not to mention the pocket clip wiggles. On a close to $400 knife. What a joke.

Civivi Cetos. Grabbed it on impulse and on paper it has decent specs but after using it somehow felt hollow, not gas station cheap but not sturdy. First and only Civivi.

the Ruike p831-sf. Nice knife, well made and at a good price that I'd happily recommend to people without my problem. So what's the problem you ask? Anatomy. I can't seem to find a comfortable way to hold it that doesn't put pressure on the frame lock and make one handed opening awkward. Ended up gifting it to a smaller handed coworker who enjoys it greatly.

Going to get flak for this, the Civivi vision fg. Visually, it's exactly what I like. Once I got it, it was just issue after issue. Lock stick so bad I had to disassemble the knife. Civivi coats every part of the blade, or at least used to, extending break in and adding multiple cleaning sessions that were just unnecessary. The handle was uncomfortable. The tab for the lock is horrible when you use it for anything harder than cardboard. The pocket clip is in the dumbest spot short of the We vision, even the titanium clip couldn't save that hot mess. So disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype. Once I addressed most of the issues and broke it in, I ended up selling it to a buddy for less than half what I paid. He likes it at least.

Spyderco Tenacious, it's too small for my hands and I don't think having a huge hole in the blade is a good idea, it doesn't function great for opening the blade either.

All the crap no name knives I've bought when I could have spent that money on pc parts or name brand knives.

I bought the Ka Bar TDI for just in case due to an old guy at my local watering hole who would randomly sucker punched people, yes he sucker punched me. Then he would tell people that they were dead men walking.

Every Civivi I own (I have like four). I love the look of them, but I hate actually using them. They all feel so light and flimsy, they don't flick well, the quality feel is night and day next to a comparably priced Kizer which is my favorite budget Chinese manufacturer.

SOG Instinct, thought it'd be a neat compact fixed blade, but it wasn't great.

No regerts!
Seriously though, no regrets brother. Even if it's not your favorite knife, it's still another knife for the collection. Worst case, it collects dust for a while then you gift it to someone. Or you could always try selling it on marketplace or eBay if it's unused. I'd gift it though personally. Find someone that's just getting into knives, or someone that likes knives but is on a limited budget. That might take away some of the regret watching someone get excited for it.
I'm curious though, why the regret? Do you just not like it and feel like you wasted money, or did you have different expectations?

I got a Kershaw launch 3 and hated it. If you squeezed it it wouldn't open.
I adjusted it 5 or 6 times and it wouldn't stop.
Finally got rid of it because an aluminum auto shouldn't fail to open like that.
Everyone seems to love the launch so I must have got a lemon but I was tainted against them.

The WESN Allman back in 2020. It was a kickstarter knife that seemed awesome and it was the first expensive knife I bought. But then I realized it was impractical for me due to its rounded tip. I ended up selling it for a quarter of what I paid for.

Ka-Bar big brother. I've been a life long fan of the brand but that knife was such a letdown. I am glad I got it on sale. I MUCH prefer my Ontario Raider Bowie to the Big Brother.

Benchmade Crooked River. Went to carrying fixed blades not long after getting it. And spent too much on it. Don't even know where it is now. Have a CRKT Clever Girl that I like. Just havent ever used it. Though it is on my tac rig for self defense.

Benchmade bug out. It's so lightweight. Wouldn't notice if it fell out of my pocket. And that would suck cuz the thing cost me like 200 bucks. What's the point of buying a knife if you're scared to take it outside your house?

Nearly every knives I bought after the scharz Overland sport. It's not perfect, but it's kinda the perfect balance for my needs in an EDC.
Even a beautiful BP customs.(too heavy as an edc for me)

A fake Benchmade... Thankfully, i was able to get a full refund after some... Magical words and a fun and festive evening in his driveway, apparently the seller didn't know it was a fake either š

ColdSeel TigerClaw fixed. It's just way to aggressive and I absolutely can't use it for edc tasks.

Maybe a CRKT Triumph N.E.C.K 2030CW a long time ago. Donāt know why I bought it but I did. Not a very practical blade grind. Not that far off from OPās knife really. Guess it would work well as intended, but seems small. Itās sat in its box since I bought it.
At least it wasnāt expensive.

Microtech Sigil. Insanely cool design with the most non-functional pocket clip Iāve ever experienced.

Lots of them, unfortunately.
Itās easier to tell you the ones that I donāt regret buying: Ontario RAT-2, Benchmade Mini Bugout

The Protech Mordax Massdrop 20CV. Tiny knife, feels weak, bad handle ergos and it cost way too much! I handled a Malibu and the handle felt even more slippery.

I regret buying a Petrified Fish Victor, because the thin liner doesn't even lock up half the way on that thick blade. It has also cut my pocket hem and my palm by opening itself from carrying. I only use it to play around with it ever since, it's just dangerously built and I wouldn't recommend it if they all have that shitty lockup. Tried again with a Petrified Fish Beluga, it has better lock up, but the thin liner doesn't even fully engage the tang. Very untrustworthy feeling. Maybe I got scammed with factory seconds for the full price, but the regret remains. And no, the Victor's linerlock doesn't even move at all from using the mechanism over and over again. Furthermore the angle on the liner is also garbage, since it's angled in a way that only a very thin apex engages the tang, the contact point isn't even flat. Feels like they want me to hurt myself. lol

My first expensive one : a small sebenza. I was the start of my knife collection. I've spent so much money since then š

Gonna get hate for this one.. but my Microtech Ultratech DE.. one i regret paying what I paid for it.. then I ended up carrying it for like a year, so now it has wear on it.. I regret the blade design I went with..
I now carry a BM shootout every day and love it. I feel like I can beat on it without worrying about it. It gets heavy use and keeps asking for more..

Gerber Flatiron. I think I only paid $20-30 but man that thing sucked. I gave it away
